Fixing of air mass flow sensor Mercedes A140

If you have a Mercedes A140 you have a great chance to get a problem with the Air mass flow sensor.
My car is a Merecdes A140 from 1999.
This is the solution if you have Air sensor fault on your w168.
The solution is very simple, you can fix it by yourself.
What you will need is a simple resistor.
Since we can not test the computer at first try a 18k blue one with 1% tolerance. Propably it will work well but later on you can change it if your car is not working well. I would suggest to use an 18k resistor with 5% tolerance.

Update: The best results on my car is metalfilm resistor with 18k 5% tolerance on both* sensor.
*If the second sensor is wrong as well, the resistor goes to the 4th and 5th point.
So I have two resistors on my mass sensor: One connected on the 2nd and 3rd point and the other one is on the 4th and 5th point.

Hello, Toth; this weekend I made the repair of the MAF sensor; i removed the damn blades and replaced with 18K 1% resistors; it was sensational; stabilized engine idling, power and responsiveness; sensational; here in Brazil our tropical temperature 1% tolerance of the resistor was perfect; in places with lower temperature like Europe 5% tolerance is better; thank you for your initiative and creativity; Congratulations and thank you.

Hi i have a A 160 w168 and when u took it to Mercedes dealer they said Its the air mass sensor and because the unit is fixed to the ECU its best to replace it..cost astronomical i don't think the car is even worth that much... anyway I am a diy get can you advise me on what transistor you fitted does it matter wich side it connected as I see it's blue with stripes.. that you soldered onto the 2cnd and 3rd last pins... thanks in advance..

I'm back here. I removed the original sensors then I welded two wires at 2 and 3 and two other wires at 4 and 5 making them exit the control unit in order to easily try out different resistors. In fact, I closed everything and I tried many resistors of different wattages but I did not solve anything. The car keeps turning off and sobbing. Goes wrong. I do not know what to do

Hi, you can go for the blue ones (they are same thing but different styles) and this is from Google-> Stability properties are less good than for the metal film resistor. ... The resistance material for metal oxide resistors is tin oxide that is contaminated with antimony oxide, this is to increase the resistivity. Metal oxide resistors can withstand higher temperatures than carbon or metal film resistors. Anyway, u can try the metal oxide resistor, but if is not good enough, try to get a metal film resistor....

Yesterday I tested my car with 15k 5% ;15k 1% ; 18k 1% ; 18k 5% ; 22k 1% ; 22k 5% resistors. The best results is with 18k 1 and 5%. I kept the 3W 18k5% ceramic resistor in my car and it is working well! ;)

+Peter Govaers honestly? I don't know. But if I were you at this point I would try it . As far as I know the sensors aren't changeable. And I think it's very simple and easy to solder a resistor on the sensor. If is not working, you can take it off easily

You are putting fixed value resistors. You should use trim resistors and adjust based on the resistance coming out from your mafs. If we knew the resistance value on those pins of both sensors we could adjust the resistance to correct specs using the trimmers.

At some MAF repair services, they only solder a potentiometer to pin 2&3, then try to adjust the ohm value to get best settings. I used a trimpot 3296 100K ohm, glue it inside the box, make a small hole for screwdriver to adjust. See also comments at Zarif Rajabov.

Hi Marius, I was testing this solution only on my A140 /petrol/. So I'm not sure that it will work out for you. Otherwise your problem is could be something else heater plug for example.

Hi @Toth Robert, I did measure the blades of my MAF sensor and they were pointing someting like 240 ohm each. I did solder the resistors but without removing the blades. Did you removed yours?

My A140 has issues only on cold start: shaky, drops idle (and excesive exhaust smoke) and after that for 2 seconds revs to 2000 RPM by itself, but after about 10 - 15 seconds or more everything gets back to normal. Warm start is perfect. Did you had the same symptoms on yours?

In my opinion- Use the cleaner first. If the cleaner fix it you don't have to do anything else....

Spraying and cleaning the blades didn't help at all, actually it made things really worst. Then I tried soldering the two resistors and boom.... the car works like brand new! I can't believe my eyes. You're the man. Thanks a lot!

@@maurypendu7622 Sort of, what we are doing basically is the resistor with its resistance will send a fake but a kind of good enough signal to the ECU instead of the broken MAF sensor. This is obviously not a perfect solution to make it perfect you need to replace the MAF sensor.

The functional concept of an air flow sensor is based on measuring heat transport. An actively heated wire is placed in the air flow, followed by another unheated wire functioning as a temperature-sensitive resistor. So you'll simply have to identify which one is the resistor (2nd one in direction of the air flow) and do a continuity measurement between resistor contacts and the pins. Second Option is to heat it up by using an air dryer and detect the change of resistance between the pins. Danger here would be that the heater also changes it's resistance when heated, so make sure you just heat up the actual sensor plate

It was like rough idle and lack of power. But according to comments below in very cold weather it may not work. (I would try it though)

Hi how do I determine if I need 2&3 only or 4&5 as well? One thing I don't understand is this for a defective ECU that is throwing a MAF code and it repairs it without the need for reprogramming? If yes what does it do, does it bypass the sensor(s)? If yes is it healthy for the car in the long run, mileage etc? Is it worth to clean the MAF first could that be the reason for the error, or is it the ECU I don't understand: it seems to be very common on w168 (I have 2000 A190)? thanks

Szia Robert! Tegnap reggel megcsináltam az átalakítást,mind a két ellenállást beforrassztottam. Pöccre indult és hibátlanul működött az autó☺! Viszont ma délután nehezen indult sajnos! (eddig is minnél hidegebb volt annál nehezebben röffent be). Miután beindult azonnal jó alapjárata volt és simán ment. And does this trick solve the problem with a bit higher fuel consumption and higher emissions? They have found the problem with this air mass flow sensor part at the authorized Mercedes service. My car uses a bit too less air and solves that by taking more petrol into the engine.

Hi Joosua, I am pretty sure that the resistors will change everything on your car, but I would suggest to use the variable resistors maybe it will give easier settings

@@miroslavtsankov You should ask for "3 watts - 18k ohm - 5% tolerance metal film resistor". If they give you a very small blue thingy with wires on both side than it`s fine. You can try it.

@@miroslavtsankov Do not worry, they should be fine. For example the ceramic resistors are 10 times bigger than the metal film resistors. Do not forget to attach it to the board with glue gun. They are slightly heavier than the others so the soldering can break off easily in case of shaking

I didn't remove it. The sensor is on the other side. And they are covered with a tiny glass. Easy to break them. Do it carefully if you have to.

How is this even a solution? The MAF is not working because the film has to be replaced. Soldering a resistor won't solve anything at all as the data sent to the ECU will be bad anyway. You have to have the MAF rebuilt.
