Fixing P0A81 High Voltage Cooling Fans on Escape/Mariner

Fixing P0A81 High Voltage Cooling Fans for Escape/Mariner is a easy task. This DTC is set due to a circuit concern with the HVB cooling fans THAT IT. This code will not set due to a blockage or lack of AC to the HVB. This is so common there is a TSB. The TSB for this DTC is 16-0118. The parts needed is Cooling fan kit 5M6Z-10C659-B. This will come with 2 cooling fans, zip ties, and foam pieces.

Would this make my cabin ac not work at all? I hear the compressor as soon as the engine starts ac on or off. I can hear the blower motor in the back going to town, and the lines that go to the rear evap are cold but the ones for the cabin are hot.

The fault code p0a81 can be caused by the following: a faulty Battery Cooling Blower Assembly, an open or shorted harness in the Battery Cooling Blower Assembly, a poor electrical connection in the Battery Cooling Blower Assembly circuit, a faulty Integration relay, a faulty Battery smart unit, or a faulty Power management control ECU.

The cooling fan on the 1 gen escapes are the problem 99% of the time.

How do you know the fans are really bad, and not just too slow for the taste of the BCM? Contact resistance for the electrical, or a lack of lube or gunked up bearings? Little electric motors are very reliable.

As stated in the video there is a service message for this concern. In the ford process you perform service messages first as it's a common failure. If that doesn't resolve the concern then you follow the the pinpoint test in the workshop manual. On these vehicles the fans are the most common cause of the concern that's why there is a kit to replace them and a service message.

2006 FEH I've already replaced these fans once about 2 years ago. About a month ago I got the DTC for the blend door which is the other common problem with these. The code was intermittent so I just replaced the blend door motor today. Now the battery fan codes are back. Anybody else have their fans fail after a couple of years? I got new ones the complete Ford kit.

@@agonalsmusic there's no US stock in the depots. Your gonna have to have the dealer check dealer 2 dealer. When I did the video there was a BUNCH of dealers with the kits in stock. I had to order mine from out of state.

Oh, and do you think there's any possibility that the cabin filter being covered (by boxes, et cetera, in the back) could affect the temp of the lithium battery? I found where to buy the part, by the way, so don't worry about that.

Battery is not Lithium. Cooling system affected by year. 05-09 can't be blocked - draws air in from outside OR recirculates A/C cooled air through battery. 10+ can be blocked is it only draws in air from cargo area (and is not as reliable as A/C cooled batteries).

Same code. Same issue but mine will reset and thefans will run until i turn the escape off again. Is it possible that i have a bad relay? I just hate to spend $500 and it be a badrelay

Mine would work on and off. It's most likely the fans causing the problem that's why there is a service message and new parts.

It's intermittent because of the lag time in heating and variable ambient conditions. If you ever get these codes (P0A81 is one fan, P0A96 is the other), you have on or more bad fans. It can take awhile for the car to detect the hot half of the battery before it throws P0A81 or P0A96.
