Out of the jokes, what Ethan here is doing is really important. Just because an artist is a beast and has a lot of social popularity, does not mean their way has to be yours as well. This "Becker" guy has the mindset of a professional studio, that is his field, so this kind of advices really help a lot for a young artist/animators trying to find his way into studios. This type of topics are the ones universities like mine always try to teach or talk about, and you are getting them for free with Ethan. edit: Great series! Really the mvp man, this topic is the cause of team failure in projects, not doing the simplistic form. Thank you so much, I am still greatful for your discovery 6 months ago!!
@greenc1088
@greenc1088 4 жыл бұрын
You realize not all artists are working as animators or even digital art right? I know he's focusing on animation or audiences on his field but he doesn't emphasize this ALWAYS and you can teach people the right way without bringing down other artists. It can send a bad message to viewers that only his method works and other artists are teaching wrong when in fact these artists he criticize do better than him. In the end it all boils down to using other artists as clickbait to gain more views.
@alberto9827
@alberto9827 4 жыл бұрын
@@greenc1088 I get your point. I feel you are being driven out by the fact Ethan humour is a little bit over the top. You said: "these artists he criticize do better than him" yes and not really. To define doing better than someone is really hard to point. Ethan has worked for Dreamworks, has Proko work for them as well? I think not. My point here is the same I wrote two months ago. Yes, Proko do very good instructional videos about anatomy and whatever, but it all comes down to, what does work for you. With all due respect, I am a 3D Generalist just about to graduate, I know this kind of topics upside down and the easiest tips Ethan has pulled out have helped me more than a lot of classes and tutorials I have seen (even Prokos). That does not mean that one is better than the other, it is just that what I study for, it works on a studio as concept artist, storyboarder, sculptor, animator, etc... Are you an illustrator? Sure, learn all the muscles and all those stuff, but if you work at concept art nobody is gonna tell you a muscle is wrong. If the piece looks fine for the production team, then it is all set. If you are as educated as you seem to be, you know that the best work come first looking the bigger picture, simple forms, flat shapes, movement, composition and THEN you add detail or whatever. This is for EVERYTHING, simple comes first. Martial arts, soccer, math, you name it. It is not about clickbait, it is about to teach young and old artist to stop romanticizing on complex works means better.
@greenc1088

I just wanted to tell you Ethan, thank you. For the last 5 years, I had been taking art seriously, studying.. reading anatomy books, going to life drawing sessions, and spending over 20k on 3 years of college I'll never get back. I stopped drawing and painting and doing what I loved most because I felt so incredibly discouraged by my stagnation. Because of your videos, I feel like the fire within me has been lit again, and I've been focusing more on the main focus I've been trying to pursue since I was 14. Thanks again you big stinker.

@@jangonauta I actually made some progress with this! I really used to hate drawing... It was worse than just art block. Drawing used to trigger anxiety attacks for me, before I could even start drawing. I had to let out my creativity in other ways for years. More recently I just accepted that I was having severe art block and set it aside to work on my mental health. But I also had to remind myself that I'm the type of person that'll never be happy without creativity in their life. So I HAD to work on it slowly. I had to figure out the bad thinking and bad beliefs around the anxiety. Figure out if they were unbalanced/extreme or just plain wrong. One example is, "I'm not worthy of doing things just for me, for fun." Also, "Anything you do HAS to make you money or be productive, otherwise it's a waste of time." And then there was just exposing myself to the anxiety for like 10 minutes every day. Even if I drew really badly. I was often disappointed at the quality of my work when I did this but I had to remind myself that quality wasn't the point here. It was consistency. And I found myself getting lost in drawing something for hours again. Or drawing to escape some other troubling emotions/circumstances. So, yeah guys, it's possible to recover from extreme, pathological art block. You may have to take a planned, psychological approach like I did. Ethan's advice definitely helped me because he's all about focus on what you want and big picture. Not fussing with details unless it's necessary. I have actual diagnosed OCD so it was a great counterbalance to my natural way of thinking. Also, I know my way of talking isn't really the culture here because I'm so honest an earnest but I really appreciate this channel. It was such a turning point for me because the way of thinking about art is so...different from most others out there. Etha's style is clear-cut, no-nonsense; he doesn't hold your hand (yet, somehow, is still encouraging). I think it's because you can't take yourself so seriously when he calls you a little baby. He makes you think, "oh my god i've been such a sensitive little flower and that's not how to be a professional." Thanks Ethan! You've really changed my perspective! Hope this little novel might help someone else going through what I've been going through.

Great video. I appreciate this content. To be honest I got really deep into Proko's figure and anatomy course in an effort to improve my ability to draw semi-stylized anime girls. But then I realized most of the pro Asian artists I want to emulate don't have the sort of sophisticated knowledge he is teaching in his courses and I also have a hard time trying to simplify shadow shapes as a result since I cant help but think about all those smaller muscles.

Kinda wild how many people think Becker is putting Proko down. Proko's material is great because it serves exactly the purpose it intended. The danger of Proko is that many young artists are fooled into neglecting design for anatomy, proportion, and rendering, when they're aiming for visual design rather than a more classical style of art or sculpture. Key word here being NEGLECT.

As an artist we should all learn from ourselves..not from a particular person. Proko is one of my favourite artist...try to appreciate him and support him for what he is doing right now,,. I wish to see your classes according to your knowlege not by criticizing an artist.

I feel like this video essentially just illustrates the difference between drawing what is seen vs. drawing what SHOULD be seen... or perhaps more accurately what is most easily processed by the viewers' brain? I used to draw what was seen and tried to keep structure in mind and strived for ultimate realistic accuracy but it is so complicated, and perfect realism isn't even the style I want to achieve... so thank you for this, I still have so much to learn but the conceptual stuff you feed us is so helpful, all shenanigans aside haha
