I am glad you were able to fix the chuck without having to remake it.

Thanks for the tip. I bought some grey, red and black today from Sydney Tools. It's currently on a special with most grades 30-40% off their normal price eg grey $2.03/sheet. I'll look for an opportunity to try it in my next video. Cheers.

Thanks Stevie. I liked your oil pot from a car part - they are usually made from good quality material and are a great resource. I've made several things that way. Cheers.

The NT tool holder itself, are mostly very accurate, it's when you install low grade collets into the ER taper is when problems arise. There are at least 3 different grades of collets, and if that's not good enough, you can buy adjustable ER collet NUTS.

Learnt something here - didn't know there were 3 grades of collets and had never heard of adjustable collet nuts. Thanks for sharing Steve.

In addition,, there are manufacturers that make very accurate nt/er tool holders, even from China. Check the specs.

You must have a very good set of ER40 collets, that's where I'm very surprised, at the low runout.
@alanshomeworkshop Жыл бұрын
Well I probably caught a lucky break as I didn't try rotating the collet to see what difference that would make. The collet came from a set I bought in March 2020 from M&G Productions. Concentricity of the collets was claimed to be within 0.008mm - they still list the same set here: mag-pro.com.au/index/index/productsdetails/id/513.html Cheers.

Thanks again for your help and patience. I suspect the original problem related to the hole that I drilled through the body of the NT40 socket. That went off-centre, and because the boring bar had such a long stick might not have fully corrected the eccentric hole. I'll test this theory by remounting the NT40 socket and running a dial gauge in as far as I can reach. Cheers.

Nice video Alan. So what method did you use to set the taper angle?
@alanshomeworkshop Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Eric. I set the taper angle using a 5" Sine bar that is designed for use on the top slide and a gauge block stack. Cheers.
