The Battlerager was from 2nd Edition Complete Book of Dwarves. Wizards should have read the book before making the class. Real fun class to play. While raging, the DM kept track of your hp total, and you were only allowed to know that you were having a great time. After raging though, it was entirely possible for your character to drop dead because all the benefits turned to penalties due to reality catching up

@Rexir24 жыл бұрын
Here's how I'd change the Battlerager: Level 3: Spiked overcoat instead of armor. Costs 25 gold to acquire, can be worn over armor during a short rest or donned like a cloak (can be used with Unarmored Defense). When used with magic armor, the damage caused by the spikes becomes magical. Grappling or being grappled causes damage equal to your strength modifier (minimum 1). Other abilities of this feature stay the same. (Features from a single class really shouldn't conflict with one another, and the scaling helps in higher level gameplay.) Level 6: Temporary hit points gained equal your constitution modifier plus your proficiency bonus (minimum 1). (5 or 7 temporary hit points per turn won't matter much against the expected incoming damage at higher levels.) Level 10: When you use your rage and as a bonus action on later turns while you're raging, you get to dash. (Simple quality-of-life fix) Level 14: When hit by a melee attack from 5 feet away while wearing your spikes, you can automatically inflict your strength modifier to the attacker as damage (minimum 1). (QoL: no rage required. The damage change is subtle, but meaningful at 14th level; most barbarians would have a strength score of 20 by this point; 24 at 20th level. This feature should compare and contrast with the berserker's Retaliate; A berserker typically swings for about 15 damage with a chance to hit with a Brutal Critical, while a multiattacking enemy by this point often swings 2-3 times and minions often swing once each. Berserker is generally better for a solo boss; Battlerager for a minion horde)

My experience in playing battlerager from level 5 up to 16: 1) AC doesn't matter. Your thing is using reckless attack. You just get hit. If something hits you it isn't hitting someone else. 2) Try to get adamantine spiked armor. You'll get critted a ton when you always use reckless attack. 3) Dwarven Fortitude (dodge to heal feat) is extremely potent as battlerager as you can stay raging while dodging as you can do the bonus action attack even if you don't take Attack action. 4) 3) is super nice if you happen to get a Periapt of Wound Closure 5) Grappling extra damage is garbage, but grapple + push to knock down is a good tactic. 6) 14th level feature Spiked Retribution is extremely annoying for everyone involved. Having to remind about it all the time is tiresome and interrupting.

About the Spined Ravager's Bristling Fury... it will be a doozie for the DM to keep track from the start of the game. Numbers-wise the Spined Ravager feels rather strong when I have felt that the base Battlerager has been decent already. Theme-wise much nicer tho. I also like the addition of spikes to existing armor. This way you don't have to rely on character specific loot to be given out to get something useful. My barb had to make his adamantine spiked armor as a downtime action.

A man after my own heart. Everything you put is exactly how I play. I have the periapt, I have commissioned a set of adamantine, and I treat my low AC and high HP as a boon and a resource. Only beginning 14 DeX opened me up to raise wis and I'm considering training for the ritual caster feat (cleric) so I can cast ceremony to make the finest dwarven holy water. I wield a lance flavored as my helmet/head spike. Only really use it on the opening attack then switch to fists

The class is a ton of fun to play. Literally throwing yourself at every enemy and embracing the battle lust. Barbarians aren't allowed to utilize heavy armor for a very specific reason, and this revision unfortunately completely disregards that balance in favor of thematics. Barbarian rage is balanced around the fact a high AC is difficult to pair with it. Barbarians are MAD because it's the only way to keep rage in check, paired with their massive d12 hit die. Being able to take a 3 level dip into this subclass to rage in 18 AC plate is completely broken. Simply allowing battleragers to convert magical or otherwise light/medium armors into spiked armor gives them some scaling, without it being too easily abused.

I don't know if I've just missed it (If I have I'd really appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction) but I would really like to see a fixed four elements monk. I really enjoy the idea of making the Battlerager really strong, as it's such a limited subclass. Some people might think that the final feature is far too strong, but it's gonna be extremely limited on who can even be affected by the feature. For starters, to even grapple someone of large size you need to take Grappler, so that's a feat taken to make this work, and you can never grapple anything larger, so many endgame CR monsters are just going to be straight up immune to it, since they will be of huge size or larger in most cases. The idea of a Half-Orc Barbarian doing that Iron Maiden-esque hug and murdering someone brings me great joy.

Berserker is weak, but it isn't as terrible as people think it is (I played one in AL from 1-20, spent my money on greater restoration scrolls) The major tweaks they need is to let them sleep off an exhaustion level on a short rest and let their level 10 ability use a STR based DC like Battlemaster instead of using CHA. The biggest thing that people don't realize is that Frenzy is one of the only abilities that allows an bonus action attack without taking the attack action or using another ability to key it off like casting a spell. This means that the berserker can use Intimate Presence to keep someone scared and then hit them with their bonus action. The WIS save is only on the first use and they can't get out of it until the get out of sight of you. There's also a bunch of other actions that a berserker can do, like grapple or shove or dash to get to somebody. Plus their level 6 and 14 abilities are amazing. Immune charm and frighten is a big deal for someone with low wisdom.

I'd like to offer some thoughts to this path. 1st I will say I like what you did it honor's Pwent. That being said I think I would tweak it a little. Instead of 1d8 damage for the spiked armor, I think it should be 2d4 piercing. I know this is pretty much the same thing but my thought is you are not hitting an enemy with one spike but a bunch. Also, spiked armor training should allow you to use your armor as a double weapon, meaning you can choose to take a bonus action to make an attack with your off-hand. This just makes sense to me cause you have 2 arms covered in spikes. I have a question about Barbed blitz. Why does it do 2d10 extra damage? I can see an additional 2d4 (or 1d8 if you don't like my idea.) But I don't see the reason charging in this way would do an extra 2d10? Also, I don't understand why "Keep your enemies closer" ability "shake vigorously" deals 8D8? This is not a complaint but a question in reasoning. Is it because you are giving up all your attacks to do this one? 8D8 seems like a lot. I guess it makes sense, just was wondering the reasoning. Overall I would play this version. I just really think you should consider my Idea about the spiked armor and be able to make an off-hand attack as a bonus action.

So major things that I think ate overlooked: 1.) You looked at the class through the lenses of someone who's read the books and wanted a certain effect or bust. As I read the class, I didnt see a ton of problems. 2.) Your play with the battle rager was in the one area most unfriendly to it. Any other homebrew DM could remove the restriction, throw some magic spiked armor at you, and even allow the spikes to be on any medium armor, thereby making it stronger than unarmored defense as the highest medium armor is 15+ dex max 2. I dont know of anyone who would bump dex at any speed when it comes to barb and you're not missing anything for con because the 15 already matches the +5 max con. Add any magic abilities or bonus onto the armor and it outpaces it. 3.) That remake is REALLY loaded. You're almost encouraged to just not wear any armor, making the requirement of using 2 hands for the final ability a non factor. Adding the proficiency bonus to the temp HP would allow for an effective 22 HP every round against bps damage. Also, thematically, across all barbarian subclasses, if it's tied to combat, its tied to rage. This breaks that convention for nothing more than wanting to pull off what Pwent did in the books. Overall, the few minor issues present in the current subclass are almost immediately remedied with a few changes from your DM which are in no way world or balance breaking.

As for the price and weight, I agree on the price, but the weight should only be 15%, not 25. Yes, it's a lot of spikes, but but it's also not. But I guess you could argue that the damage increase mitigates the weight increase. I don't know. Again, hard to distance myself from the original write up of spiked armor and shields. A 5th level+ would have 3. That would be the main alteration I would do for Frenzy. So it keeps Duel Wielding being a viable option for the berserker, it keeps the chance of a crit with Great Weapon Master useful, and it also allows you to use it on the same turn you Rage. And as for Intimidating presence... Idk man I have no idea on how to fix that.

Intimidating Howl When you reduce a creature to 0hp, all creatures within 30ft of you must make a wisdom saving throw (DC=8+CHA+proficiency) or become frightened of you for up to one minute. Creatures can make a save at the end of each of their turns to end this effect early.

@@Rodrik18 Not a bad idea and your idea gave me an idea. Furious Roar, While the Berserker is raging he may use his bonus action to let out a roar that frightens all creatures within 30 ft. Dc 8+prof+stre or be frightened for one minute. Creatures may make a save at the end of each of their turns.

Has anyone added this to DND Beyond's homebrew section?

I would make it so this Barbarian couldn’t use weapons while raging. Pwent never used any weapons maybe enemy body parts, but that’s it...

Personally, cover is fairly annoying to deal with. Id make it all attacks have disadvantage until start of next turn.

It becomes a lot stronger tham other barberians. A think it gose a bit to far

The problem with you wanting to rework the armor into full plate is the barbarian class features that specifically say “as long as your not wearing heavy armor”
@NerdImmersion5 жыл бұрын
Which is why under the Spiked Armor Training section it states: "In addition you can enter a Rage when wearing heavy armor."

Thibbledorf Pwent isn't a mere battlerager. He's the leader of the Gutbusters. (They had their own, 10-level prestige class in 3.5; compared to the battlerager's 5.) And yes, he wears heavy armor. That doesn't mean others do, or have to. And the restriction for dwarves explicitly says it can be lifted for other settings or a tailored version of the Realms. There's even an appendix in the back of the book describing how the subclass might be used in other settings. Why half-ass the video, man?

@@NerdImmersion Having a massive AC plus Resistance to bludgeoning piecing and slashing will make him hard to hit and heavily reduce amount of damage they will take. I like the idea of limiting the armors that can be use but that's just me

Fix it? I think it's just fine, sure the Spikes should maybe be a D6, but you just need to play it right.

Gods your naming conventions suck. But otherwise we do have similar lines of thoughts as regards to mechanics. However, you really need to 'keep it simple stupid', and not worry so much what the novels say.
