Fixing The Old Swamp Cooler

A little while back when the weather was threatening to warm up a bit, I got to checking out the main cooler for the greenhouse to discover one of the bearings had seized up. This old cooler has been with me for nearly 30 years now, so I thought I would try and repair it yet one more time. This is a long video but for those of you who might want to attempt something like this……every thing that could go wrong did go wrong, and here’s how I fixed it anyway.

Yours was the best of the 3 videos I watched. Every other video did not talk about what to do if you did not have a fancy puller. You talked about the shaft collar problem, etc. Found out what I needed to know. Thanks

I'm glad the video was helpful. I think that video was done over three years ago and the cooler is still running fine after all this time without any further attention. That cooler is over 35 years old now and been in constant use. The water pan has started to rust out so I've had to patch some of those leaks over the years. But it ain't dead yet!

Here’s a tip maybe try to take everything out like the float pump in that buy new parts. Buy a new belt after that I would get some coding things to prevent rust and spray it everywhere on that and do the same with newer units because it’s hard to get rust off.

Actually the old spacer would still work even with the cut in it.

Well I'm not sure which way takes more time but this way is cheaper. Not so sure about easier. But maybe it is.

Slathered with grease and no zoom oil for the cups?

I have found the thick grease lasts much longer than the thin oil you could put in the cup. Keep in mind that cooler is over 30 years old, constant use and this is the first time I've had to replace a bearing. I'll stick with the grease. Ed

BTW over time if that muratic acid is left in the revivoir it will sloly corode the metal.
