Kinda late for this excellent video. However, as it's really a timeless video, had to see how the lower 2 rams operated and were repaired. BTW, we just got through repairing the Tilt Unit Motor of a 130hp Honda [gunk inside holding the brushes from contacting the rotor] and needed the extra knowledge to work on those rams. What better time to work on the rams than when we have the whole unit on the table. Great stuff guys. . . it really helped! A heartfelt THANK YOU!

Great video. I made a tool for removing the caps by using a small piece of scrap steel plate and drilling four holes in the correct place. Then simply put bolts through that fit snugly in the holes in the cap. A central hole with a larger bolt facing the other way and double nuts on it, allowed me to get a spanner on to turn it. Worked great.

Thank you for the great work you are doing! I've been watching all of your videos in the last few years. I have a Yamaha F40 4t for 10 years now. Lately the engine is coming down slowly over night/after few hours. I see no oil leakage, I checked the power trim oil level and everything seems normal. The screw to manually trim the motor is ok as well. I read somewhere that "If no leaks are found, it also could have been a cylinder bypassing internally"... Since I live in a small Greek island where no mechanical issues can be dealt with, can you tell me if you have a video about this specific problem? Thanks again!

I've got a 2000 Merc 250 EFI on a same year 23' Mako. Been working on it with my son. Great father son time. Since we're on a budget, trying to get the most of what we have. I have a question on replacing the manual pressure relief or manual tilt relief or manual tilt valve, whatever its called. I had to drill mine out to tilt the motor. To replace it, do I have to remove the trim and tilt motor, or can it be replaced with TnT motor in place? It looks like there is just a c clip (or banjo clip) holding it in place, as the head has complete disintegrated.

Watched several of your how to videos. I really enjoy them. Learned quite a bit from them. Any how. I have a 2012 Yamaha 90hp and I'm experiencing tilt issues that you may or may not have covered. When I depress the tilt button on the motor there is a clicking noise coming from the relay. Both up and down. I'm getting the same sound when I use the remote switch. I'm not sure if the tilt relay is bad or the pump motor. I ran a jumper wire from the battery to the blue wire and nothing happened. No click or whirl from the motor. Have you any suggestions as to what I should do next?

I ran a wire directly to the battery and no motor. Is it safe to say that the motor is frozen or still possibly the relay bad?
@wazup3333

You can try wiring 2 or 3 12v batteries in series to create 24/36 volts and directly connect it to the motor, the temporary voltage shock can unfreeze the motor

I'm not 100% on the exact procedure for that exact model. Most of the little engine's under 40 the trim units only consist of a couple of pins and then slide right out. You should be able to pull it out, there is definitely a way to remove it, I'm sorry that I don't have the exact procedure for that exact model of engine, but you should be fine and when you look at it hopefully it is just a pin at the top and a pin at the bottom!

Very good video! I have a question, at 3:12 you leave the engine on the kickstand and use the hydraulics down to suck the rams back into the cylinders. How can I be sure those little kickstands will be able to not break under all that pressure? Do you have to have the rams all the way into the cylinders to perform this? Thank you in advance for a reply!

Cheers! You're totally right! I have some footage of doing a tilt ram, it's from awhile ago though and I haven't reviewed it to see if it's enough to make a video. I've been thinking about doing that though. These next few months are going to be a mixture of the new project boat and some other service and possible a tilt ram video. I'll look through it and maybe in the next couple weeks make it! Thank you for the suggestion :)

Will the Moto-Stop wrench that you used work on other trim and tilts than yamaha and sea star hydraulic steering?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it will do a few other engines, but I don't think it will on the seastar steering cylinders. The seastar wrench works pretty well, you can hook a 3/8" ratchet to it for some leverage. Plus the caps come with the kit, so you can air hammer them off and not worry about destrying the caps :) There are a lot of different engines though, so they make a few different styles :)

I have a pair of low hour 2008 df250's. I live in a remote part of scotland. I used your videos to help me maintain them. I had to replace the lower hinge pin and seals on one of the lower ptt rams. Now when I tilt that motor down from the fully up position, just before it transitions from the tilt ram to the trim rams, it bounces a few times. I have fully cycled the ptt unit dozens of times and topped up with ATF. Any clue as to what is wrong?

Hey brother,does the starter needs to be hooked up for the trim to go up and down?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 3 ай бұрын
Yes, in some cases, the starter needs to be engaged for the trim to operate on certain boats. This is for safety reasons and ensures there's enough power available to operate the trim system.

2000 Johnson 200 won’t trim up or down. No clicking noise when throttle switch is pressed or from switch on motor. Now motor stuck in down position. Any ideas ?

So easy when you do it. My Teck said can not get parts. Seals are only in complete rebuild kits 2500.00

It's not a bad job :) what engine do you have? What's the make, year, and model number? If it's a Merc the Serial Number is the best way to look up parts.

If the tilt and trim works, and holds the motor up on land. But the motor drops down during acceleration in the water, and raises up in reverse. What would you say the issue is?
