For a beginner, would you recommend making your own book cover or hiring a freelance designer? Most of my books are a dystopian teen genre with rebellion and side romance stories, what colors would you recommend for those?

I make my own covers, but it takes a LOT of work to learn to do them properly! For YA dystopian and post-apocalyptic books, I’m seeing a lot of muted shades of yellow and blue with big sans-serif fonts. There are also a lot of “object” covers (covers that don’t feature people).

Great tips. Can you get a book cover before you publish your book. I'm writing a werewolf book that is on the dark side. I found an artist that I really like an want to discuss hiring them. Also what colors are good for werewolves, I was gonna use red and black.

I always have my cover before I ever write my books, as the covers are what inspire me to write the story! Blues and purples do really well with werewolves, I just don’t recommend the straight red and black. Red as an accent to blue can look pretty good, or red and teal! There are a couple of high selling werewolf books with just red and black, but MOST of them are more in the blue/purple ranges right now. (Amazon has a Werewolf and Shifter Romance category that’s a great resource to look into when you’re considering your cover!)
