I had rusted plates, but used Lime Away toilet bowl cleaner (gel) to remove the rust. It melted the rust right off in minutes and only required a scouring pad to remove the rest. No bath required. Just pour the gel over and let it do all the work.

very helpful video, thanks so much for posting it! One thing, though: I've recently done the same and I see that new paint gets chipped easily, for instance on the edges of the hole, where it hits the barbell. Is this expected or is it due to poor quality paint? I even applied two layers of paint... :-/
@fixitFlip2 жыл бұрын
A little paint chipping is normal over time. Spray paint just isn't as durable as the original powder coating. But it shouldn't be chipping a ton that quickly. Hmmm. What brand paint did you use?

@fixitFlip Жыл бұрын
Not as good as I should have, but to do it correctly you would need a pipe cleaner style wire brush.
@Sky..85312 ай бұрын
You don’t need to paint it after vinegar bath. Just use a kitchen wire scourer to remove rust and oil it after it . Also use only white vinegar, strong vinegar will also peal off the paint and you will then need to paint it.
@nuclear_winter Жыл бұрын
I just bought a York set brand new and already looking at these 🤣 because the paint was chipped in a few small places and one weight somehow had quite a lot of rust on the corner 🤔 idk how that happened lol. I kind of want to go over them with spray paint but I'd want an exact match and wouldnt know. Plus I'm not sure if it'll be pointless if this paint will just come off with time or itll rust anyway. Looking at second hand iron weights, they're almost always rusty, but surely not everyone leaves them outside or something? Mine will be inside on a carpet most the time.
@nicholas69005 ай бұрын
I went with the Rustoleum black satin paint and primer. It's not an exact match to the original york plates I have but it's very close. Whatever paint york uses it's definetely tougher. For now rustoleum seems to work with 1 coat and I wont be too bothered by paint chips in the future. Id rather have some scuffs and paint chips than use a rusty plate with old paint thats turning into goo.
