@Fix it with Fowler will show you how to felt a shed roof and ensure it lasts a long time using some basic Do It Yourself tools.

Measure the shed roofing felt to size and cut with a sharp Stanley knife, than put to one side.
Determine where the clout nails will go and take a measurement as once the felt is in place you will not see any marks.
Apply the shed roofing felt adhesive with a brush to the roof and leave for 15 minutes to become tacky, then lay the felt into position and fix with clout nails.
Tidy the edges of the shed roofing felt with the Stanley knife and for a neat finish install a wooden trim, this prevents any wind from lifting the shed felt and ripping the felt. A final finishing touch is to cover the nail heads with the roofing felt adhesive to prevent any possible water ingress.

Just watching this before re-roofing my own shed, my wooden edges that are nailed over the 3 sides of the shed are rotten, they're painted in an off white wood treatment, so instead I bought lengths of white uPCV at 100mm x 10mm to do the 3 sides, no more rot, ever. Nice video, nice and clear, is that just a stick of normal kids chalk you're marking the felt with or some sort of builders marker?

What keeps water from entering between felt and edging, resulting in rot due to trapped moisture? Would it be advisable to run a bead of caulk between the two surfaces? Have you ever done a gambrel roof with felt?
@FixitwithFowler
@FixitwithFowler Жыл бұрын
Hi Lori, do you mean the cladding strips that go over the felt on the front and edges? These were painted prior to being installed, so it should last a long time. You could use outdoor silicon, but i never have. As for a gambrel roof, you can just apply the same principles for the felt as per my video. Just make sure you plan where the overlaps in the felt will be and allow for a full strip of felt for the ridge. Hope that helps!

@FixitwithFowler
@FixitwithFowler Жыл бұрын
Hi Aidan, Thanks for your comment. If you are just going to use nails, then you could go over the existing felt. However, if you want it to last, i would advise removing the old felt, which doesn't take long. Most shed roofs fail during windy weather. This is due to a lack of mechanical fixing. By using adhesive and nails to fix the felt to the shed roof, you will increase the felts' life span. Don't forget that adding guttering will also prevent the shed from rotting near the base! (I have a video on this). If you haven't already, please subscribe to my channel! 😊

Thanks for the video. We're looking to felt a kids playhouse and the roof is full of gaps. Do we need to fill those before we put on the adhesive? Or is it thick enough that it won't drip through and make a mess of the inside? Also, does the felt need tacking down onto the actual roof or is it ok just to nail down on the sides? As there are no strips of wood to attach to, the wood is really thin. Thanks!

Poor quality grade of felt, environmental issues such as animals on the roof eg birds squirrels cats etc, overhanging trees. Polyester felt is strong which doesn’t rip however it is expensive but well worth. Just make sure the felt has some form of polyester. Nails every 2 inches, the glue worth using but it’s not essential however if your shed is in an area of the garden which is targeted with wind,rain or environment then the adhesive is best to use. Stay away from cheap felts as they normally rip when simply handling it. Best of luck.
