BMW 650 GS, DR650, KLR650, now there is a fait test. I actually had one of the MZs, what a cracking little bike, very rare, no dealers, no spares but a real gem.

Good review in real situations, new bikes as it shows arnt really up for self surporting wild tours, the basic old mid range trailie is unstopable and the 125 as much as I love for their light weight do suffer the lack of power when needed on a hard days ride. thank you for your efforts and suffering to bring this to us.

very nice video, it is not necessary to say the bikes are incomparable... its known are diferent. very good review testing differente partsof the bikes and showing clearly why each one can be used for different trips, with pros and cons, at the end you show which is better for each job. thanks for the vid

Interesting comparaison 👍 i just buy a GS650 from 2001 and suspension is not so good on OFFROAD as you saw it. Have you GOT some tips to improve this ? Thanks ✌🏻

Forks from drz400 or many KTM WP units fit without much work, upgrade rear shock with hyperpro, ohlins, many other units. You can buy longer rear shock linkage to get more travel. Change 17 rear wheel to 18. Transforms the bike.

Why did the BMW get poor for repair it yourself? That really depends on your skill level.

I have one and it's quite a bit more difficult to work on than most other single cylinder bikes because of a few reasons. Its fuel injected, so electrical work is a bit more tricky as the harness is a massive bundle of wires that go everywhere. There are lots of extra bits and pieces that are required for FI to work that a normal carbed bike won't have. Additionally, the fuel tank is moved to below the seat and the battery/airbox/oil tank occupy the space where the fuel tank normally is on a bike. With the fuel tank in such a weird spot, it blocks access to lots of stuff down below and lots of common maintenance items are hidden under layers of plastic. All of the front fairings, battery, and airbox have to be removed for an oil change as you have to remove the oil tank and drain it each time because it's a dry sump engine. In order to change the rear shock, it requires the entire bike to be split in half.

@@rubiconnn My brother has the BMW f650gs Dakar, and he works on his own bike, never went to a dealership for maintenance. He's not even a professional mechanic, so yes anybody with some skill in motorcycle maintenance can work on this bike themselves This bike is meant for adventure, and it's quite renowned in that. which means it will be in isolated areas away from civilization often

I would say both of you are right. Working on a BMW can be done also for amature mechanics, especially with the manual from Haynes, it's brilliant. But compared to my Honda Transalp, it is A LOT more work for basically any task. That being said, BMW engineers did all of this for a reason, the Rotax engine works perfectly and the center of gravity for this bike is very low so you don't feel the weight.

I think that it should be pointed out that today’s owner has the benefit of at least one or two decades of known faults and fixes on the BMW. If the proper attention is given to the bike while at home, there should be minimal maintenance issues on any long distance, RTW, off road trips. If one cannot, or is unable to look after their own bike, and it is given to the dealer, repairs and maintenance will only be given in stock form, and the bike will never see any of the known upgrades and remedies.
