Guys, I will do reviews on the bikes I can find. To ask for this or that model is not necessary, because I cannot promise anything. As I said in the video if anyone live near by and have any of these bikes I will be more than happy to see it.

The rubber on the foot pegs can be removed. It's a bit heavy but all in all it's a great ride! Add a dominator exhaust and you get that extra torque on low revs. Heavier oil in the fork legs is a good idea also if you're a heavy rider. Love mine!

Hi, Steve.....I just bought one about 5 weeks ago. St model, 1999.....bit tatty but got it for £900 with 10 months MOT. However, if I rode it for 20 plus minutes or over 20 miles, it would often stall when coming to a junction, etc, and I had to keep above 3 k rpm, revving the damm engine like some 16byear old moped rider at traffic lights. Last time I rode it, I managed to get it back home, but it flat out refused to start anymore until the next day when the engine had cooled off. I popped new spark plugs in, changed air filter and followed a tip to remove the metal plug cap covers. I did a short 10 mile trip, and it seemed better, but since then weather been too bloody cold to risk running it any distance from home, and getting stranded. I'm going to remove the carbs over the xmas (trying first without removing the prolematic air box, but if necessary will removenit) and other than that not much more I can do. Already, though, I like it. Got some Dunlop Trailmaster tyres for it, which feel much better on the road.

I have the exact same bike, so i can perfectly reflect on what you said. First of all, the suspension is indeed quite soft, so if you want to ride a little bit sporty, then i advise you preload the rear to the maximum. The brakes are pretty good, although nothing ground breaking. The rear brake has a really good feel to it. Indeed, it is best to cruise at 100-110, but with a one tooth bigger front sprocket you can bring that up to 120. Proper maintenance of the carbs is essential, otherwise you will be cursing the bike, as they are a little bit of a weak spot. Attention must be paid to the voltage regulator, as it is pretty unreliable and tends to break (advised to swap out for a F650GS regulator). However, if you properly maintain it, then the bike is basically bulletproof and will work 24/7 without skipping a beat. I did 1900 kms on it in one go, worked like a charm.

Hi! I got one of these and have problems with the carbs, what do you mean by proper maintenance?? The idle goes up and down like crazy and the mix bolts are as recommended just sent it to get cleansed with ultrasounds and ordered a double repair kit hope that will fix the issue ... I openned the whole engine by the way changed "retenes" "cojinetes" of the counterbalance shaft the chain.... lot of stuff all gaskets, waterpump fix kit... changed the regulator place so it´s nice and cool, rewired the "alternador" the engine now sounds like charm when its turning at more than 3k rpm but the idle is a total mess which makes it undriveable and scares me to overheat and break another gasket while moving around the city I need to keep it at least 2500 so it doesn´t turn off.... any suggestions about the carbs??

This was my first adv bike, very basic but ideal for a start. I did the 2009 BMW Eco Challenge in South Africa with it, completed the entire trip and went everywhere the GS 800 and GS 1200 ADV guys went. Issues: Soft suspension and brakes overheating driving in traffic but ideal commuter. All round good bike, loved it very much.

I have a 1997 that I use for adventure riding. It's better than I thought it would be. A few things to keep an eye on: the camchain tensioner is hydraulic, and when it fails it fails bad. I put a manual tensioner screw behind mine and it starts a lot easier like this as well. Also keep an eye on the front sprocket: it's on the right so the engine unwinds the keeper nut. Put locktite on it. If you're taller, put foam on the low part of the seat to save your back. Turn off the petcock after parking if yours is hard to start, as the engine can flood when parked otherwise. A note on the front wheel: lots of tire options in 19 inch, not so many in 17 inch.

Great idea testing budget bikes, everyone has a budget they have to work with and the reality is that the money you save buying a bike like the BMW 650 as opposed to say a new BMW 1250 pays for your trip around the world. It is a great help that you know about mechanics with an older bike but most are very basic and are easy to work on so money is saved in that regard also. It is one of the reasons I love my DR650, they run forever with simple maintenance and are cheap to run. I forgot to mention to you when we met up in Melbourne but the DR I was riding has 240,000 Klms on the clock. Keep up the great work Pavlin, open the minds up of people that they do not have to have the latest and greatest bike to enjoy motorcycling. 👍👍👍👍

How do you find bikes with such low kms? In Greece the bikes with perfect condition have 50-60 thousand km and the ones that were used a lot have 100.000km . Mine costed around 1700euro it's a model 1997white with 60.000 km and few extras. German used vehicles in Greece Are considerably more expensive than they are in Germany ...

I found this video a few months ago when I bought this bike. Two weeks ago I took it on a 3700 mile trip across the US from Maryland to Colorado and back. Had an issue with the chain that was entirely my fault, pilot jet got clogged about half way through and I had to clean out the carbs, air filter was a bit clogged and the elevation changes threw it off a bit so she was running rich when I got back home but overall I couldn't be more proud of it. It was comfortable, sufficient for every task, always fun, and never overheated.

I bought a F 650 ST with less than 18k km for 1800€ from 97 to drive in the City and 60km to work on one tour and I really like the bike. It has to stay on the street, so it's not sinful to get an expensive one. It drives really smooth, but with heavy wind from the side you have to go slower, because of the light weight and the high build. All in all, for that price, REALLY REALLY GOOD! A simple bike that works! I like!

This brought back fond memories of my '99. The Rotax engine was very good. I had no problems. What you said about mud - definitely not a bike to take into the mud. I did once and learned my lesson. It's a little over 400 lbs (180 kg) dry weight. It can sink down into soft mud easily. So hard packed gravel roads would be as far as you might want to take it. However, on the plus side, It has a counter-balanced engine so highway travel is easy. You will get a 400 W alternator, 12V, 10 amp hour battery, and optional heated grips. This allows considerable leeway for optional electrical loads. In colder weather using a heated vest and the heated grips, you can be very comfortable. Other than heated grips and a 12V plug-in for heated gear, only add-ons I used were hard bags and a Scott-oiler. Think of all the money spent by guys with KLR 650s on doodads. Not needed with the F650; you already have what you need. A very under-appreciated bike. Easy to work on, too.

Thank for this great review of one of my favourite bikes I haven’t owned yet. I am planning to build a 650 Dakar engine based trail bike with a CCM style frame. The objective is to achieve something close to the specials that CCM actually entered for the Dakar in the 1990s. So, I’m starting with the best watercooled engine, and looking at all the options for forks, swing arm, brakes and tank. It will be tall, lightweight and unique. And to keep things simple, from preference it will have a carb, not fuel injection.

@GerhardCombrink
@GerhardCombrink 5 жыл бұрын
22fret - My problem was also the seat and insufficient leg room. Fixed both with a set of SW Motech adjustable pegs which I mounted in the lower position, an Airhawk seat which I keep a little more inflated than what is recommended for increased distance from the pegs, and I fitted bar risers. Individually these changes seem minor, but together they turned my Transalp into a fantastically comfortable long distance tourer. I just need to change the tires to 50/50 to cope better with rocks and will be changing over to Mitas E-07 in about 2 months from now. The ground clearance is also not great, but after fitting a nice beefy SW Motech one, which I used a number of times, I’m not concerned about damage any longer.
@22fret
@22fret 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, I will have the seat modified soon, let's see what I can do with the pegs. I'll probably need some risers and a taller windscreen, too. She's my everyday workhorse for the simple reason that running costs are not even worth mentioning. Currently there are some Michelin Anakee III on it. Quite street oriented, but not bad at all. Furthermore they last for ever. My set has already done some staggering 27.000 kms, and there's still room for at least 3000 more. Next time I'll try Heidenau Scout. I'd like to go offroad a bit... For long distance touring I use my 1983 BMW K100. I have just come back from a 4.100km trip through Germany, France, Switzerland, Monaco and Italy. That was an awesome ride...
@22fret
@22fret 5 жыл бұрын
Well, I do, because on my K100 I can ride for hours and hours. But you should know that I'm almost 2 metres tall. The seat is too low for me and the slope to the tank is quite unpleasant for my butt. I have to get rid of the slope and put at least some 5 cms more under my behind. Then everything should be fine...

I have the same bike, 3 modifications you !must! make & i made by my self (except nm 3) 1: the exhaust is too close to filter box, you have to cover the filter box with fire preventor material otherwise your filter box will make a hole. 2. You have to move your rectifier outside in order to expand his life spam. You will find him under your sit. 3. You need to reinforce the top case base on the frame, otherwise it will break. If you have the same bike out there i hope you find this tips usefull, drive safe!

And I like the sound of it's single cylinder engine. It's not real fast, but fast enough to have fun riding it. I love it, I will never sell it. By the way, the rubber in the footpeg is bolted in from the underside. You can remove it and then it is a serrated footpeg, suitable for off road riding. Put some off road tyres on and it'll bring you everywhere.

@@motorcycleadventures Would be nice to see a back to back test with a comparable Yamaha, if you were ever able to do that. Also, does the F650 pre-date BMW moving on to Can-bus wiring? I'm not a fan of this 'modern' wiring, as it doesn't lend itself to the home mechanic, like good old fashioned copper! :-)

I had a Funduro/97 version, with 21" front wheel and higher screen, and was a very confortable motorbike Soft suspension, light weight, great brakes, big mirrors (those are not BMW neither original ones) Easily 140-150kms/h with side panniers and topbox Fuel onsumption around 5lts/100kms. Nice budget travel, or even city, option

Hi , I like your review and I'm buying one of these very soon. (When I get the money). You were talking about Frankfurt. Well, I have been there and stayed with some really nice German friends (bikers)while we were on our way to Faarkazee in Austria.I don't know if that is the correct spelling. I was riding a GSX 600f but it got me there in one piece. I think I was the only biker on a Suzuki amongst 30,000 Harley Davidsons. Anyway,I had a great time. Keep up the good work. I like your honest reviews.

I have had a 1996 F650 for 10 years now. maintenance is very easy and parts are readily available and cheap compared to new bikes of the same class. I have owned many different bikes throughout my life and The reliability of this bike is unbelievable if you buy a good one. With the right tyres on they are great off road as well. I have never owned an older Transalp so I can`t really comment on them, though friends of mine who do are very positive about them.

Great video! We have a few of those here in Brazil, but most of them are in awful conditions due to difficulties on finding parts. But, it is unanimous that it is a tank. I completely agree with you that basically, for normal usage, we don’t need anything better than a bike like that. I travel from Brazil to Chile on a Explorer, and definitely on a lot of ocasions, a smaller bike would be better. I also had a GS 12 which is a marvelous bike, but rationally speaking, a bike of such a low price can do the same. BMW motorcycles is a fascinating machine, no matter the size. Best regards from Brazil!!!

Paval You are lucky because you have the European version of the Yamahaha 700 tenere. We in North America are overrun with crotch rockets that go fast in a straight line, Harley's and an assortment of big displacement bikes in between. Not much of a dual sport selection here. Lucky me. I am rebuilding a 92 Africa Twin .....It just takes time and money.
