Overlanding Challenges in Sandwich Harbour & Skeleton Bay // EP. 57

We are staying with our Land Rover Defender at the coast of the Namib, and we are challenged by the elements both in Skeleton Bay (Diamond of the desert) and Sandwich Harbour. Scary Overlanding Challenges!
The area of Walvis Bay might not seam to be very appealing for Overlanding, but outside the city things get interesting. Pelican Point protects the Harbour,creating a lagoon. This is a paradise for many birds, including flamingos, pelicans and many smaller species that come here to breed. Also there is a huge salt refinery, covering thousands of hectares in pink platforms. The place looks incredible. But it is really rough as soon as you get in front of the Atlantic Ocean, and that's where we are heading.
Staying on the beach at Donkey Bay (Skeleton Bay) it is not comfortable. The weather is really a challenge, as there is fog many days of the year and everything stays wet for days. But sometimes the fog lifts and unveils a really beautiful but rough coastline, where Jackals, seals, seagulls and cormorants live .
Kai goes in the water to surf in Donkey Bay, but it turns out to be too big of a challenge due to the fog and the strong currents.
Later in the week we go to Sandwich Harbour. This tour is very famous, and normally is done with a guide, we are doing it alone with our Land Rover Defender. This can only be attempted during low tide as it is the only time there is enough space to pass between the ocean and the vertical dunes.
As the path increases in inclination and the tracks get deeper due to many cars driving in front of us, we slide out and get stuck in sand very close to the waves.
Enjoy the Ride!

This video encapsulates the heart and soul of overlanding - the thrill of conquering challenging terrains and the serenity of immersing oneself in the wilderness. The scenes of navigating through rugged landscapes and then finding refuge in the simplicity of camping evoke a profound connection to the natural world.

You have made me seen parts of our globe which I'm dreaming of visiting. Stay safe and be careful on the roadways and trails. Best of wishes from Guyana. This place is both, beautiful and rough. This coast is not the place to enjoy sunbathing at the beach. It is foggy ,cold, dead seals, etc. But when the fog leaves it is one of the few untouched places one can explore freely.

Wow another awesome adventure video from you two . The wild and rough coast line there is wildly beautiful . And the drone shots sure help by showing the grander of it all . Hey Steve, this place is so untouched, even though is just next to a very busy port. It was shocking to see so much wildlife and be able to camp just there. It was really tough though, wind, fog, cold. Not your nice, sunny idea of camping at the beach. But all this made it memorable!!

Great video as usual... I'm sure you could have done it by reducing the tire pressure to 1 bar (or even 0.9 bar) and given the traffic in the area you weren't really alone. You just have to be careful not to turn too sharply so as not to unseat the tires. I have a Patrol that I took to the Algerian Sahara, it weighed 3.7 tons with the two of us in it, and we went all over the dunes.
@Thebluelandy
@Thebluelandy 11 ай бұрын
Thank you Laurent!! We try to don't go very low to avoid getting it out of the rim. That's worse than a couple of more minutes digging 😉 also a plus of not going so low all the time, our tires have now close to 80.000km! But yeah we get this comment all the time, that we drive with so much pressure
@Thebluelandy
@Thebluelandy 11 ай бұрын
And regarding the weight, we are 3 tons with a 1998 year TD5 engine, not mapped and after all these years it's not giving us 122hp, so dunes like that are not a real possibility.

Hey John, I mean it's risky to step in front of your door... Yes, I don't think it was too risky in this case. We checked the tides and had plenty of time to go there and back. And there quite a few cars around which can help you to rescue the car in case something happens... We don't want to damage the car, but we also don't want to turn around as soon as is gets a bit challenging. Otherwise we would not need such a 4x4 😅

How difficult was it to get permission for the drone?
@Andy-Gibb
@Andy-Gibb 11 ай бұрын
Most times their are no laws regarding drones in South Africa , Namibia that I have found and I have lived here for 54 years. Saying that common sense laws are good to adhere to like no filming military bases or sensitive areas and also near airports and other government installations. Their may be some local requirements around towns but in the open there is no laws for or against.

We were too lazy to do it! Haha we use them when we know digging alone will not take us anywhere, you can watch many episodes from the Middle East where we used them constantly. Once used they bend a bit and to put them back in place at the side of the car we need to drive on top to flatten them out again.
