Yes, we sank our Land Rover Defender one day after crossing to Argentina.
Overconfidence is really your worst enemy while Overlanding, it can lead you to take stupid risks, this case is the example.
We were driving the paths parallel to the Uruguay river, which after heavy rains over weeks, had increased it's levels, flooding neighbor roads. We were already more than 10 km away from Yapeyú when we decided to do a river crossing, that turned out to be a nightmare.
It was really dramatic, our adrenaline was off the roof, we were eaten by mosquitos, it was the most desperate we have been in this trip.
Please, learn from our mistakes 🙏

Hey guys! This was a tough day for us, one we will never forget. Funny how one quick decision can change everything. We were really lucky and got the best help we could think of. Regarding the comments about how a winch would have helped, we have to disappoint you. In this scenario a winch on our Landy would not have helped as pulling from the front had the high risk of flipping the car to the ditch (we were tugged against the bridge). We could only rescue the Landy from the back (this was also the assessment of the rescue team that knew the broken bridge). That being said, another car with a winch, that would have been ideal, but we were lonely wolves here 😔

Hi guys, just a quick one: do not even hesitate de drain all oils into a clean pan and check for water presence. Your car has been emerged in water for hours. As simple as that especially in a Defender, prone to leaks. Not checking the oil could be as big a mistake than not walking the flooded track. Trust me from experience, happy driving, cheers, Martin
@Thebluelandy

Hey Martin, we changed axle oils cause I know the rear axle always gets water. We opened transmission and the oils looked clean and it was not more oil/water inside than before. Surprisingly transmission and transfer box of the Bluelandy are dry, even if they have oil inside. Anyway thanks for the hind, appreciate it!

@Thebluelandy

That was soooooo close. Dangerously close. We were incredibly lucky, how it happened and how fast we got help. If we had sank the right side, it would have been completely different story, starting with a ruined ECU and damaged fridge. But other design decisions paid off big time, like putting our electric system and all electronics the highest possible (left side), and using encapsulated batteries.

Oh boy, what a catastrophe! Having said that, it’s not at all uncommon to get stuck with a 4x4 - many of us have found ourselves well and truly stuck and in difficult circumstances. In this case, the water sure complicated things and you lost the daylight, but you all seem to have remained fairly calm and you did all the right things to save Bluelandy. Poor Irati having to run out to find help! Good thing she has the best Spanish!! Bravo to people who came to help you. And also Bravo to Bluelandy. People can say what they want about Series/Defenders, very very few cars could tolerate what Bluelandy went through and not be totally destroyed. New cars have too much electronics and microchips to tolerate water. And finally, those mozzie bites were terrible but at least no crocodiles in that water, thankfully!!! 😂
@Thebluelandy
@Thebluelandy 8 ай бұрын
You made the best summary of the video 💯. The time of the day and the fact that a storm was coming complicated everything. The firebrigade was close to let the car there for the night! Something that we wanted to avoid at all cost, as with more rain, the Landy would have most probably fall completely to the ditch/flipped and then we would be in another completely different scenario...we were really proactive and taking all measures to minimize as much as possible the damage. And yes I was running those dirt tracks like a mad woman, completely wet and screaming for help. Without Spanish this would not have been so "smooth". The blue landy is incredible, I don't care about what others think, with our Landy all the Way! And guess what that area had caymans, but most probably they didn't want to join the drama. 😱

Thank you for sharing that experience. It was certaily not easy to think about videos while facing such an event. We can see how much a defender is resilient. It is one of best vehicle for travels. But on the other side, you have been a bit lucky, after your mistake, not to have the water on the other side of the car, with the ecu and the air filter. It looks like somebody is keeping an eye on you, to transform lessons in experience for you. I am sure that you learned a lot about it. Enjoy your travel, very rich in events and people solidarity.

It was not so easy yeah. Specially as we were trying to don't damage more gear , as we were seeing our money flying away at that right moment 💸💸💸 that's why we run out or battery, we were not considering that... And many moments like me running and screaming for help are not on camera, that was the last thing I was thinking on. I didn't even consider taking shoes and I ended up the whole time up until late, barefoot. In that moment you really concentrate on a few things at a time. We were lucky in many ways, but also planned the interior well, as none of our electronics and electrics got close to the water, they are all up. And yes we did learn our lesson, and answering to you, we had many other events after that, but nothing as serious ✌️😎

Its amazing to see how "cool" you stay after such a traumatic experience and event. I once lay my Landy on the side and my knees were shaking and I thought that's the end of it. At the end I could use my Sandboards I screwed to the Landy the night before right away for the first time and got away without any scratches. It is great so see this from the Sofa and thank you for sharing all your adventures. It helps the working population to keep working, save money and like you guys - start driving. I am not afraid of starting the trip - rather of coming back and being unable to get back to a boring 8-5 life and missing the freedom of traveling too much. Regarding your post of the advertising: Yes, KZbin adverts can be annoying, but I hope you get some cashback on the Videos - which are somehow paid by the adverts. So in case of skipping, I am happy to let them run, if you get any dime cashback on top, because we let it run through. We wish you a great journey ahead - eagerly waiting every week to see the Bluelandy post in KZbin. There are just not enough KZbin channels like yours, to fill the weekend. Have a safe yourney ahead and thank you for convincing my wife to walk the rivers now every time (I don't like crocodiles very much).

Sorry to disappoint, still no winch planned! In this case also a winch would not have helped as we could only pull from the back of the car. Pulling from the front was too risky as we were tugged against the bridge and could flip the whole Landy into the ditch. That's why also the rescue team had to come from the back side to pull us out. Another car with a winch,that would have been freaking amazing, we would be out in no time. 🙈

Very sorry to see your dramatic event unfold. You might check out a youtube video entitled something like “winching backwards from the front of a vehicle”…interesting video, i think it might have saved you? I recently put the 12,000 lb Badlands winch on my Jeep Gladiator. You guys got through this and it will be a funny story- one day.

It was really tough. But I guess previous situations helped being partially prepared for it. This is a good motto, for me I always say: expect the best, prepare for the worst. This helps being open to what might happen and don't freeze, and staying positive at the same time. We are already talk about some funny parts at the moment, but there is still some shock in us I guess. 😵

Another great episode from Blue Landy....just as well you had a fluent Spanish speaker with you!. Dont weigh yourselves down with a winch....they are rarely used and with some foresight you can avoid having to use one. Just as well its off season for anaconda attacks as we could have been reading about you on DW!. Please exercise more caution further down the Argentinian coasts where Orcas chase seals up the beach..... Thank you Bert!! Talking Spanish was really life saver here. It would have been really difficult to control the situation without it. We had to negotiate with the prefectura, then with the firebrigade so they would help us in the dark at all cost (as soon as possible) but many other things, like how to rescue the car, where not to pull (roof). Yeap Spanish was indeed important. For the moment we haven't missed the winch, so not getting one soon. But we have to admit that driving with another car would make things less risky. Anacondas no idea, but the area has caymans 😱 Regarding the Orcas, can we kayak there?? 🤔🤣 And regarding the websites, feel free to post us on the forums, about "what not to do" 🤣🤣🤣

Best recovery tool is a 10-15 ton come-a-long and extra rope. Winch is fine for as long as a engine runs and the batteries last. Once that stop, you done. Nothing can go wrong on a come-a long. The little bi9 of weight is nothing compared to a winch and it do not take a lot of space.

You should've shown a glimpse of them on video. Instead after the whole village was mobilized in middle of nite to help rescue you from disaster, you then quickly go back to your car, equipment, clothes, heater, ecu, and cleaning n drying up without anymore mention of the ppl that saved you. The battery not starting again was a reminder to you to remember to be genuinely thankful for ppl who help you along the way, and always remember to pay it forward. We were at the house of the prefectura (where packed the things back) and gave all our gratitude to them and everybody involved. We shared our contacts with everybody to stay connected in the next days and they knew where we stayed (camping).A good reminder, not everything makes it to KZbin, but that's doesn't mean it didn't happen. Also, people are there to rescue not to be filmed and end up in KZbin. This is not a documentary.

Discipline is the rule number one in any adventure. Solo offroad without a winch?

There are so many rules, but it’s not an adventure until something goes wrong 😅 A winch can save you work in some places. I’ve now been stuck only in two places where a winch would have made a difference. In both places we performed a self recovery. It was a lot of work but we always got out. In the river a winch would not have made a difference.

@@Thebluelandy Safety first is the rule number one. What you have experienced is not an adventure but an "incident", with minimal damages just because you were helped. And even if for someone being helped is pretty obvious 9:25, actually it is not at all. I am sure that you understood the lesson and you well never ever perform water crossing anymore without checking the surrounding. The winch is a must for offroad solo touring. I have two winches on my landcruiser; I used the rear winch one time only in the last 3 or 4 years but it's enough to confirm that it was a good choice. In your situation, the winch AND a snatch block could have solve the issue in 15 min. From your video, I suggest to replace the fire extinguisher in a better location and considering your cargo handling, I'd just add an additional 1Kg fire extinguisher.

This was a time to return to the old Land Rover school of driving rules. Take all the safety considerations AFTER driving over the terrain (wet or dry). Protect the vehicle, and consequently, do not put the occupants in danger. Is better to avoid the possible problem, than to register a near catastrophe in video. You have lucky. South American off roads trails, are not the better places to get into problems (I live there, so I know very well). Good luck in your adventure travels.

Thank you so much for your comment! We were overconfident, and lazy, the worst combination to get one in trouble. We have driven very complicated tracks so far in 3 continents and we have been taking care, but one bad decision can lead to a disaster like here. We were lucky in many ways and learnt a lesson. This video hopefully will help others avoiding trouble, next time they consider not walking a river. See you around 😎

Hey, a winch would not have helped in this scenario. Moving to the front was not an option.
