Back in 2016 I was grinding to get the “get to level 200 in multiplayer” achievement. However when I was around level 110 I cancelled “syncing data” and I lost all my progress, so I just quit. It just so happened that a few days ago I was thinking of coming back to the game

Ryse seems to be like The Order 1886, a very interesting idea with nice visuals and concepts but ultimately falls short for having a subpar execution in the gameplay department, but a decent time altogether. Another one of my favorite subpar games of all time Darkest of Days, very interesting concept but troubled with development problems that influenced the state of the final product.

Ryse is this type of games you complete once and remember for long. It’s just an easy and brutal slasher with an epic story and stunning looks even today. I wish this game was more than that, but still, it’s been great 3 evenings for me as an Ancient Rome fanboy

As a History buff, Ryse is honestly one of the funniest and most historically inaccurate things I’ve ever seen associated with Rome. We have Nero in the middle of a Britonnic siege when he’s an old man, with Vespasian’s amphitheatre (the colosseum) standing during his reign, Boudicca being around a century before she was alive attacking Rome with an elephant to avenge her father (not her daughters), Commodus being Nero’s son and agents of the Emperor being dressed like Persian kings. And that’s just all the major things off the top of my head, not even getting into the nitty details like the wrong swords and armour. Like there’s so much wrong with this game from that perspective that you just cannot help but laugh. 🤣 As a game though, I found it got very boring. The combat is fun for a while but the poor level design and repetitive mission objectives quirky turns the game into a slog and chore that just isn’t fun to play, it was one of the most grindy feeling experiences outside a live service game that I can remember. You can absolutely have fun with the other game modes for a while outside the campaign, but you have to struggle and push yourself to want to play this game for long, it’s not one that endears itself to you easily. The game’s biggest selling point, as one of the first Xbox One exclusives, is that it looks pretty. And to be fair, it is still stunning even today, particularly the shots and buildings of Rome, it is still an impressive looking game, you have to give it that. But that really doesn’t count for much. I consider this game something of a spiritual prototype for what Space Marine II would accomplish. There’s an idea and fantasy of being an unstoppable badass warrior with a third person perspective of this absolute tank of a person, but I don’t think Ryse accomplished its vision very well. So while there are some things about it to give credit for, it’s absolutely not a game that had any kind of long term impact on the industry or culture of gaming beyond the superficial elements.

Thanks for this, excellent reading on top of this excellent video. Is there an action game that does a good job of being accurate to roman history? I know very little, but it would be nice to play something that's historically accurate
@John--Silver3 ай бұрын
@@interwebs_ If you like strategy games and have a PC, try total war rome 2, with the DEI mod. If you don't have the best computer, there is "europa barbarorum 2" mod for total war medieval 2 An older game but the makers are very painstaking in their detail for accuracy. Assassins creed origins isn't very accurate, but it has a lot of historical info in it's museum mode. And it's fun just to explore Ptolemaic egypt.

I love seeing older launch titles get a second life as cheap games that got ported to PC 10 years later. Ryse wasn't mindblowing but for like 7 bucks that's good value right there. I liked Ryse when I played it a couple of years after its release. The graphics and story were pretty good, but I dislike the linear platform type of gameplay and the quicktime events. I think a sequel based in more an open world where you can work your way up in the ranks and take place in historic battles would be far more interesting.

I thought of a cool mod idea that would breath new life into this game (someone PLEASE STEAL this idea!!); modders, voice actors, and a few literary scholars get together and make a "Latin mode" Where you can make everything they say from the spoken dialogue to the subtitles to even the UI and HUD be entirely in Roman Latin for the time! You would of course be able to configure whether you want elements of the HUD, the subtitles, or the actual vocal dialogue in your native language or Latin, and could go as far as configure things like whether the C makes the "s" sound or the "Kh" sound, or if the e made the "ee" sound or the "ai" sound and other things that scholars might debate about the language. (as for many of them who are hardcore in the "s" camp or the "kh" camp of pronunciation would care about that and get mad if they couldn't change it.) Lastly, I want to emphasize that it would allow for some underground voice actors to shine and say their lines more casually and naturally without having the cultural popping of English speakers trying to have a serious roman conversation!
