The story to me doesn't make me feel like "Seeing things from a different perspective" because of this. Gameplay wise, it's well done. But storywise, I had high expectation on seeing the Templars pursuing their justice in their own unique and opposite way but honestly I was a little disappointed. Both sides just switched names and acted the same way.

I have a soft spot for Rogue. When Unity was overshadowing it, I constantly went up to bat for it, and I enjoyed it 10 years ago when it came out. Black Flag but with snow instead of tropics was a fun change. When I replayed the PS4 remaster, the cracks did show much more prominently. The story is kind of short and bad. The Assassins in this title are probably the least likable we've seen. A few characters feel like cartoons. The map is needlessly big (which feels really WEIRD to say post-Origins, but there are so many places in the River Valley the story never takes you to.) And I know it's extremely petty but I hate how Shay's main outfit on the game cover has a black hood but it never does in the game. You have to wear the Dark Assassin outfit to get anything close to that. The Lisbon mission, though. LOVE that setpiece. One of my favorites in the series.
@Fizhy5 ай бұрын
I think Shay’s Templar robes having a hood was always intended as symbolism more than because he’d actually have that in the game

I believe that the E3 trailer and the high Def pictures of Shay with his hooded Templar outfit take place between ages 28 and 45. There is a huge gap of time between the mission when Shay saves Achilles from Haytham and the mission where he assassinates Charles Dorian. At least that's my head cannon. @Shadowmegafan40005 ай бұрын
I think saying Mirage is half assed is definitely wrong, half baked would be a better way to phrase it because that game is clearly made by perhaps the most passionate developers the series has had since origins, they were just stuck with an engine which didn’t want to play along

Half assed by Ubisoft as a company. I'm sure Rogue also had passionate people working on the game. Game development is incredibly difficult and AC Rogue as a game came together well enough that the team worked hard on it, same with Mirage. That the higher ups at Ubisoft decided to launch Rogue in the same year as unity or give Ubi Bordeaux no resources apart from Valhalla's bones still obviously reflects poorly on the end product. We care about the behind the scenes because we are hardcore fans. Most customers aren't obliged to care about this stuff. They pay money and want to get something that can compete with other games out there.

I cannot agree more about this game’s setting. I love exploring the frozen wastes of the North Atlantic more than the Caribbean, it’s just such a different vibe to Black Flag that feels isolating and alone, which matches Shay’s feelings of isolation after leaving the only life he’d ever known. Even the River Valley just has a level of comforting beauty to it that’s different to what you find in Black Flag. Even New York adds to this dimension with a constant state of fear and unease as you never know where an assassin is hiding, because Shay is no longer an assassin, meaning you are no longer comfortable in a place he once hid with ease either. The sights, views and locations in that game were gorgeous and breathtaking in their scale in Black Flag but Rogue aims for places that are a lot simpler but meaningful in a different way, I think it’s a very appropriate setting for Shay as a character.
@eliaspanayi34653 ай бұрын

Rogue was my favorite for a long time, it was my second or third AC game and the music, visual style and story just gripped 11 year old me, it was really great especially when we look at the slop we get nowadays, I wholeheartedly agree with the general consensus that the story is too short and its a bit too much of a collectathon tho.
@IndyMiraaga5 ай бұрын
I always considered the "Assassin" gang to be the writers' way of excusing the crimes the Assassins commit in Rogue's story, but honestly it kinda holds up when you think about it. In AC2-Revelations the Assassins aren't teaming up with moral beacons. They ally with thieves, escorts, and mercenaries that'll do almost anything for the right paycheck. They cover that fact up nicely with charismatic faces leading those factions, and with excuses like "well we totally only steal from the corrupt, we swear!" Rogue is a proper mask off moment. It shows how the Assassins have always allied themselves with morally-dubious factions, and lets players see that from the perspective of an outsider. Another thing many people miss is Monroe and the others subtly manipulating Shay. They frequently mislead him and feed him questionable intel. The most blatant of these is when Monro tells Shay that the poison gas is to be used on civilians. Shay actually catches this, asking "I thought they were just going to use it on the military..." Monro has no response to this beyond a glance at Shay, which leads to a slightly-funny moment of Shay remembering who Monro is and apologizing by saying "Which would also be bad." But those that don't look twice won't realize that Monro just lied to Shay, had no evidence to back up his claim, and never got properly called on it. There are other examples of this as well, but this one is by far the most obvious imo. Shows that these are still the same Templars we know, and only circumstance has them in the moral high ground. Similar to when Connor worked with Haytham to hunt down Benjamin Church. But the enemy of an enemy never stays a friend for long...

One of the beauties about Assassin's Creed for me was the historical fantasy like actually being the cause for so many events such as deaths of certain targets, starting off many important events. It adds more weight that you affected powerful figures and their lives. After Unity though it started to be more reactionary, like your character was just a servant being thrown around by historical figures more than actually affecting the history around it.

Although it's undeniable that Unity is an unpolished game (just playing it now shows this, it definitely didn't receive as many patches as people think), I can't help but feel there was some overreaction at the time. For many reasons: Ubisoft oversold it, people were inclined to disappointment after the WD situation, and so on. But watching a typical playthrough from that time (other than a bug compilation) doesn't appear much different. Unpolished, yes, but not unplayable (aside from the co-op). The fact that the infamous faceless meme occurred only on one graphics card and yet was brought up in almost every article about the game just baffles me.

Since Black Flag is apparently being remade, hopefully expanding some aspects such as the Aveline DLC as well as Adéwalé DLC, Rogue should be expanded upon in a remake. A Rogue remake could improve the Assassin segment of the story allowing for the player to have more of a connection to the Assassins and it being harder to kill these former friends. It would be better to flesh out the Assassins and Templars instead of the Assassins feeling like Templars and Templars feeling like Assassins. The easiest thing that the remake needs to improve is by actually including the hooded outfit on the cover of the game. The remaster should get an update with that outfit too.

The templar side of the story was always a pretty interesting story to tell, and a plot of betrayal was a bold twist for the already saturated motivation of vengeance (That will become the norm in this franchise from there), the writting was all over the place but it has some meaning and actually was getting to something in various moments, and Shay's motivations that set the plot were rather dull or even childish (from my personal persepctive) but in the long term they were actually comprehensible, they just needed more development. But i get why the game just released like that, it was literally made in 8 months, just to fullfill corporate timelines and expect to give a "closure" to the Kenway saga so they would focus the main efforts in the next-gen. That's why the gameplay is the same as Black Flag, and has the shortest campaign in all the franchise, and has the most bland and mundane secondary content of all the games, and the maps weren't as diverse and complex as other games, and it wasn't ported to PS4 or Xbox One nor even PC until years later. It was a miracle that the game released in a polish and working state even more than AC Revelations did, talking about copy-pasted games.

We can definitely say the same thing for Origins, great game but too short and definitely needed a sequel. Unity aswell 👌🏻

Black flag is my favorite style of AC game and colonial America is my favorite setting so I throughly enjoy it. I mostly play AC for the settings anyway

Rogue is a strange game to me. On it's own, it's a pretty decent experience, yet i can't help but feel that releasing it alongside Unity hurt both games immensely. While we all know the state Unity released in, Rogue's story felt like some parts were either not finished or weren't expanded upon enough. Tho I must say, i still like the idea of defecting assassins and joining templars a more compelling than rehashing Romeo and Juliet again. I do think both games deserved much better than what they got. I don't know what Ubisoft was thinking, developing two big games like this concurrently, especially with Unity making 1:1 scale Paris.

Partially related. But how different would've things been if Assassin's Creed unity took a couple months more of development to polish the story, mechanics and overall infrastructure

this game was the last good AC game, black flag was fantastic but it wasnt really about assissin creed at all, but this game this game was lost in the console gap between xbox 350 and one, ps4 and ps5 and a lot of people didnt play it but it was one of the best ive played

And yet, the ending of Rouge leads into the opening of Unity. Meaning that if you didn’t have the next gen you wouldn’t get to continue the story, meanwhile if you upgraded to next gen you wouldn’t understand who killed Anno’s father.

As a die hard Rogue fan i couldnt agree more with you, my biggest gripe with the game to this day is that it's too short. They tried to fit too much in a game that could and should have been a main line game but was reduced to only being filler. Rogue has the shortest Story out of all AC games (not counting stuff like chronicles) if im correct. Also about the collectibles yeah they're just kinda there to artificially increase the games volume

It was good for what it was though and just like you said i really like how the world feels, colonial america is my fav setting to this day despite it not even being that interesting

I feel inclined to point out that "death by barrel" is a very real thing! Barrels have been conspiring against humankind for centuries.

I wish this game was getting the remake instead of 4. I feel like Black Flag had the effect it wanted to have with the story it wanted to have. Rogue really feels underdeveloped, it felt like it didn't have the gameplay it wanted, the story it wanted, the aesthetic it wanted or just the depth of the world with things as simple as enemy "assassin" models. If it was remade, expanded and rewritten it would feel complete to have the effect it should've had as a pre-sequel. A missed opportunity.

Yeah but that's not a remake or remaster, that's just making an entirely new game which ain't happening

I'm inclined to agree with much of this. I had hoped ACIII, giving it has us start as Haytham would really explore the ideology/philosophy of the Templars and Assassins. Unfortunately it doesn't really go there but I guess maybe Connor seemed kinda closed off? Sadly Rogue doesn't really deal with it much either. It's so intergral to all the characters, it'd be nice to get into lol. I guess it could make some players uncomfortable if the protaganists don't seem squeaky clean (the cowards 🤭) Other than that I enjoyed Rogue. Kinda felt like a more refined Black Flag and playing Black Flag -> Rogue -> III is kind of a neat trilogy.

As someone to whom AC4 Black Flag was one of the worst games in the series, I did like Rogue despite it being very similar to AC4. Most of the criticism I had with Rogue were things I already had with AC4, while Rogue did some things new to compensate for it.
