I have a similar set up in my rig and have free camped in it hundreds of times in some of the most beautiful places around Australia. The money saved in accom and the places stayed is priceless considering the small amount of time, money and effort required. And 100% better than a tent, I've slept comfortable in intense wind and rain storms comfy as a bug in a rug.

Damn, you should definitely do more trucks/4x4 vehicles. I never really wanted an fj until I watched every episode of this build. By far the coolest fj I've ever seen and you did it for so cheap!

You should put a power outlet in the back that is hooked to you aux battery only, for when you are camping.

I love your build here. I did the same one about a year ago myself. The guy who you mentioned that designed this is great. Awesome easy design. I used my FJ for a work truck for a year until I could afford a used pickup. I left the platform in. My shovels etc. would slide in handle first under the left platform. I would put other tools and totes on top. Works great. But now I use it for traveling and camping. I am to old to be climbing over the seat every time I have to pee. Love your idea for the "door" knob. I am going to use that idea too. Would love to share something clever myself. Will post it if I do come up with something. Thanks again for your idea.

Few things here, need padding, it will be a long night for you guys without sleep. Also, you should add some entertainment in there with a WiFi hotspot, maybe add a tv from the top. Add some speakers for surround if you care. A few touches that are optional but would make for an awesome time, you can even add wireless speakers to bring outside the car and watch tv from the outside to make for the best outback entertainment and camping ever. Makes me want to have one now.

idk if this is already a feature. but, I think you should apply some kind of lock to that latch that opens the rear from the inside. because if you have luggage, and something falls on that latch while driving, everything you got back there is falling out. and that's also dangerous for anyone driving behind you. (if locking the door don't stop it from opening, which, to me, it doesn't seem that locking the door will do anything to stop that latch.)

A self inflating camping mattress would give you some support for sleeping, not take up much space when put away, keep the headroom above to a maximum, and not need a compressor to inflait. Only drawback is they have minimum support. I could camp on one but I'm not that picky. I can sleep anywhere. Thanks for sharing your build.

This is funny to me because I have slept in my fj many times, only using like 15 pillows and 2 sleeping bags to make a comfier bed that is more level. I am only 5'4 and was usually drunk so it did the job
@teatonaz5 жыл бұрын
AOMechMarine AOMechMarine < - - air mattress would still be tilted upward in the front and have a BIG step down where the offset is. BUT,.. you could put double (or triple) the foam in the rear/lower section and only a single layer toward the front and THAT would help a lot. That plus parking on a slight incline with the nose a little lower might help a bit too, since the back seats slant upward, going toward the front. Really can't believe they didn't make the rear of this thing one single level and flat. That just didn't want to bother,.. probably cause the area isn't that big and they didn't think people would be sleeping inside. ( or more likely they just went the easy route.). Same for the no door handle/unlock from the inside. Frustrating.

Did they lengthen the FJ post 2007? I have a grand total of 63” in length from the flipped forward cushions to the door in my 2007. That’s 5’3”, making it 8” too short for me. I have to push the front passenger seat as far forward as it will go in order for a sleeping platform to be long enough for me at 5’11”. I am building a 30” wide platform, 72” long and utilizing the seat cushions and Right wheel well as supports, with a hinged drop down side support on the other side, still giving me about 30” of headroom. I would have loved to have built something like this instead, but unless I want to sleep curled up all night, it’s not happening.
@vwssit7 жыл бұрын
wouldnt it be simpler if you you make one lifted piece for the trunk area that will just level with the back of the seat back when folded? and does it really matter if you are going to use a air mattress in the back anyways?
