FJ Cruiser vs. 4Runner, Which Is More Capable Offroad?

We compare the two for on-road driving, off roading, overlanding, and which one we like best. We get asked all the time; which is best for families, camping, hauling, and cruising? Should I buy a 4Runner or FJ Cruiser? Hopefully this video will answer your questions.
We compare an FJ Cruiser to a 4Runner TRD Offroad. Both have similarities; lifted, 33" tires, modified for rock crawling.

If there's any chance at all of getting high-centered on your favorite trails, don't get the 4Runner. I've owned both of these and the 4Runner is a much better vehicle overall but it just can't hang with the FJ offroad on a lot of trails I've been on. It gets high-centered a lot due to its much longer wheelbase. A stock FJ is ugly as h3ll in my opinion. You have to lift it and do some heavy mods before it looks good. The 4Runner looks great stock. Whatever you do, don't get a Jeep... They're complete junk.
@Csheri2002

honestly imo depends on the color you get. idk yellow and blue arent really my favorite stock but any other color with offroad tires looks good no need for heavy mods.

Love this video. I’m a 4runner owner and literally love everything about it. I was considering the fj but just wasn’t big enough to lug all my drum gear being a full time musician while still loving to overland, road trip, and go wheelin on the trails and to the mountains. Can’t go wrong with either one though. My favorite vehicles are literally the 4Runner trd pro, FJ Cruiser, FJ80 Land Cruiser, and Tacoma trd pro.

Great video! So much of your FJ experience sounds like my Honda Element experience (suicide doors, rubber floors, space behind the front seat, blind spots, windshield). I just sold my Element of 17 yrs and bought a new 4runner. We have no regrets. If FJs were still being produced we probably would have gone that route but we don't plan on doing more than camping and maybe towing a small trailer, so the 4runner fits the bill.

Thank you for the comparison - very structured and comprehensive! Both are great vehicles and they complement each other well, depending on the use. The FJs are just legendary. My favourite Toyota of all time. Their design and capabilities are top tier, combined with minimalistic functional interior. They even had a full time 4WD option, ideal for snowy regions. They really came 15 years too soon - if you look at the new Bronco it is the same style. And people tend to go for this style more and more. Too bad Toyota discontinued them and only sells them now in odd markets such as the Philippines and the Middle East (although with limited configurations and no full time 4WD). I was thinking about importing a new one here to Europe, but the hassle is just too much, and our emissions standards are a killer.

I got my 07 FJ for $10k U.S. 3 years ago. I put about $2k of work into it and it's been a fantastic reliable vehicle. I have owned a 4Runner as well and the difference in extra weight with the same engine is a huge factor. The handling is so much nicer on the FJ. I am currently sitting at 170k miles and I hope to have this vehicle til 500k miles. Or until I kick it.

I bought my FJ new in 07, with the 3” lift and oversized tires I lost power due to a change in the diameter of the new tires thus changing the gearing. The TRD Supercharger fixed that and the huge increase in horsepower was greatly appreciated. @jmo2752
@jmo2752 3 жыл бұрын
It's still for sale in other markets... but the base platform is old now of course (as is the 4Runner), so it's unlikely to be reintroduced to North America in it's current specification. However, who knows what will happen when Toyota finally get round to replacing the current 4Runner platform... it would certainly be nice to see both a 2-door and proper 4-door version of the FJ Cruiser too in future - (just as Ford have done with their new Bronco based on a current sister platform).

Problem with the Fj, it was either market towards the wrong people, or was priced way out of its area. Even getting a used FJ its still expensive. Is that because its a Toyota, or because its a FJ?
@STinGa157

@@mattb.2359 From what I have read, the FJ was marketed toward the off-roading crowd (so it could be tagged with a high price tag) AND built too solidly, so it outlasted what Toyota planned on.
@andyham6094
@andyham6094 3 жыл бұрын
at the time it made sense due to the economy and gas prices. That’s around the time the electric idea and hybrid boom was full swing and the Prius was dominating sales. Now we def all wish the fj was still around but I understand why toyota did it. At least toyota stayed true to the off road community and kept the 4Runner and land cruiser and tacoma and tundra and did the trd pro lineup which proves to be one of the best ideas and moves for toyota since they’ve been so successful and dependable and worthy of a top tier toyota off road model. Other companies straight up killed off all their off road rugged body on frame midsize suvs like ford and Chevy and ram. Now the Durango is a street slicker speedster, Ford turned the explorer into a crossover mom-mobile, they are coming back out with the bronco for the money grab seeing the segment is more popular than ever, and Chevy just didn’t do anything to redeem themselves turning the blazer into a crossover. Nissan killed off the xterra and didn’t come back with anything yet. I respect toyota and jeep for sticking with this community even in hard times. It says a lot about the brand and what they truely believe in and want to build. If toyota brought back the fj to go with the 6th gen 4runner, 2021 tundra, and if they bring back the land cruiser to the states but make it more affordable and off road specific, they will sell those vehicles like hot cakes.
@trailrunnah8886
@trailrunnah8886 3 жыл бұрын
@@mattb.2359 a little of both I think. Other than the first couple years, the FJ sold in fairly small numbers so it's relatively rare compared to a 4Runner. Also, you have the "Toyota tax" added onto that rarity.

I love my FJ. Gotten close to listing it for sale but could never do it and very glad I didn't. Taken it through mountains and deserts and after 4 years of owning it I'm still on the same windscreen :D. Couldn't recommend this beast more.

Thanks for the video. I find it interesting that the 4runner has more room, better ride on road, 2mpg better fuel economy doesn't have the blind spot problem but both of you like the FJ better. It must be alot more fun to drive! :-) I am looking at 4runners and FJ's thinking of buying one this helped me alot.

We have a 2020 TRD-off-road. I love the FJ, but my wife can not see put of the FJ. We love our 4 runner. We sleep in the back of the 4 runner. It does everything and then some. FJ does have a cool factor. But I am a function over form type.

I got a dashcam rear view mirror.. Just a touch and it views forward (dash cam view mode) and I can see the lights no problem.. Touch again and my rear view is almost 180° in 4k for both.. Totally worth it

Woo hooo fj for the win. This makes me like you guys even more lol Heaven forbid anything happens to my FJ I would get a forerunner but I would be devastated. This is my second FJ that I have now I bought this one brand new so hopefully I’ll have it for a very long time.

Great comparison. Here in Aus we don’t get the 4Runner. So I have an FJ, but I love the look of the 4Runner and I’d probably have one if they were here.

For some reason I though you folks had the Surf but looks like there is a Fortuner. Are those not basically 4runners? So many strange toyota products around the world, no way I will try and figure it all out lol. I do have to say, us staters are a bit jealous of some of your land cruiser options though.

The 4Runner is based on the J150 platform same as the Prado 150, FJ (post 2010), and the Lexus GX. The Fortuner is based on the Hilux platform, with a shorter wheelbase (than the hilux). Trim & spec wise, it's lower than the Prado, and it is also narrower. Ronny Dahl just did a review of the Fortuner & compared it against both the Hilux & Prado, and it was pretty favorable. I've got an FJ and a Fortuner. Both are great vehicles.

@@amaclach has it correct. The fortuner just doesn’t look any good lol. We used to have the 4Runner in the 80/90s? I guess. I have seen a few surfs from the same era, imported from Japan I think, better motor and spec.

I like my 4Runner because it makes a great daily driver and is good on the highway. I sat in a FJ once and felt fairly claustrophobic. Honestly, I know this probably isn't in a popular opinion, but I think the best of both worlds would be a 4Runner for the long distance or overlanding type stuff, and a two-door Wrangler for the more aggressive off-roading.

2010+ FJ oil filter is canister type same as 4Runner. So the skid plate was the first one I replaced with aftermarket one with access to canister.

I chose RCI aluminum for oil pan for its weight. Easy access to the oil filter. I used other brands for transmission and transfer case.

I had my 7 Seat 2004 ($24K) Four-Runner SR5 for 16 years. Took it to Toyota Every Maintenance Job. Driver side Door Lever had issue 8th year. Changed Panasonic Stock Battery after 6 years. I remember FJ having a “Camry,” Engine, while 4 Runner had Modified V-6. “The Most Powerful 4-Runner Ever Made!” Loved Commercial Group of Guys Pointing to Mountain & they Hop in Race over..... My ABS Control System Finally Died out & $4K replacement was not worth it. So I got $3k for Trade toward 2020 Sienna SE (8 seater)

Thanks for the video. I looked at an FJ when I was needing to replace our SUV, but with several kiddos still in the house, it was not practical. Maybe by the time the kids have moved out, Toyota will have brought an updated FJ back into the US ... LOL

I honestly don't remember the year I looked at a fj. The first thing I noticed and turned me away was the rear doors and seat room. At the time we had a Chevy Blazer. Since that time we have had a LR3 and now a 4runner. I am asked all the time I changed. If you have ever had a Land Rover and mechanical troubles you know the answer. Would I say I love the 4runner, maybe strong like. I feel the cargo space is more important to us.
