I worked on these when they were new drop your idle speed down a bit more it is idling too fast to adjust the valve clearances.We used long feeler strips and cut them off as needed use a ring spanner it is easier.Adjusting them running is the best way as it more accurate these will burn valves if the clearances are too small.Check the manifold bolts as they come loose and will suck air then run lean and burn valves.The valves were often noisy from brand new I have adjusted 1000s do not worry about it.The rocker arm face where it meets the valve do get deep pits on them if this is the case remove rocker assembly and dress the face with emery strip they clean up fairly easily.

Great advice about lowering the idle rpms.

@@nikodemjedrzejewski8289 I always adjusted the idle on Landrovers and Landcruisers as slow as I could for normal running as it makes it easier to change gears.Send me your email address and I will teach you a few tricks of the trade you are the first person who knows what you are doing by doing the valves running.

Great video. Do you always do it while the engine is running?
@nikodemjedrzejewski82892 жыл бұрын
I did it when it wasn't running at first but that took so long and I took such effort in being very precise that the engine cooled down along with the rods, hence the clearances weren't valid. it's really key to have everything at running temp as this is the normal state of the engine. I really wanted to try the old fashion way, how Toyota wanted you to do it back then per the service manual. :)

@@nikodemjedrzejewski8289 awesome thanks. I’ve seen some people say they do it while it’s off. Going to try for the first time soon. Hopefully I can with it running. Can you tell where it needs to be set by just listening as you adjust it?
@nikodemjedrzejewski82892 жыл бұрын
@@pcbfisher3876 Both. in a perfect world you would do it by only the feeler gauge, basically feeling slight friction. You will notice the sound changing as well so quickly you'll find the right setting and sound. Just make sure it's warmed up. Toughest part is keeping the screw driver while you're adjusting. The alternate is to have the engine running a while so it warms up nicely and then quickly find the TDC do half the valves and then turn the crankshaft 360 degrees and do the other. All before it cools down.

@@nikodemjedrzejewski8289 great I’ll give it a shot with it running. Thanks again
