Meh. She can still be very strong in casual play. The fact that she is picked so low shows that she is not desirable in higher skill play, and lower teir people at the same time just have characters that are more fun to abuse in some cases. Her strongest aspects are the unblockable feints. And the fact her forward dodge unblockable has hyperarmor with it. Beyond that, everything else about her is pretty common as it comes to common annoying aspects added to characters. tracking lights, dodge recovery cancels benefiting someone who made a mistake and can be rewarded for failing. All stuff thats on other characters. I mostly just feel she isn't picked as much because there are heros with far more acess to multiple movesets in one. Shoulin has unblockable, tracking, parry lights, hidden stance, trip into high damage heavy, feintable trip that gives a guardbreak since most people have to dodge on reaction. 3 lights that stunlock the opponent while they are landing. Case in point. Why play a strong character that can beat the shit out of casuals when theres one that has everything plus more to pick instead? Edit: I also forgot they gave Shoulin a forward dodge kick as well, never see anyone use it though.

The only reason I hated Pirates design is cause I wanted Blackbeard stuff, but she is still based off a real pirate and that's neat, just not in my interests. And also whenever the comp community complains that a hero is too strong, the casual player base (typically on reddit) runs with that and assumes every aspect of the character is absolutely broken. Which they are not. Biggest reason why she was broken in comp for a while was the confirmed gunshot on external attacks, this made her a nightmare to fight against. She could confirm very easily and bloodlust + t3 was insane. The damage didn't need a massive nerfs

The level of anti-Chinese racism in the FH community has displayed always been a latent beast, that makes me very uncomfortable to hear in both YT videos and chat. I bought her purely for aesthetics, and I was very happy she was actually strong at release. The fact that people have crapped on her not just for balance reasons, but because they want yet ANOTHER Euro-Centric offering has made me withdraw from playing FH with any living people because the community is toxic as fuck.

Pirate was broken on release, that is true. However, the biggest problem was the infinites, but in typical Ubi fashion instead of slowly tuning a hero down they nerfed all 5 complaints at the same time. The speed of her dodge attacks, her chain speed, her dmg, her reach, and the infinites. The infinites needed to go, however the other 4 changes did not need to all happen at the same time. Why can't we ever nerf one aspect of a character and see how that changes it. Makes no sense. Genuinely the people who want only male variants are hypocrites. I wish no hero was gender locked, give me male PK, female LB, male Nobu, female Ara, etc etc.

This applies to all genderlocked characters, and you cannot change my mind. For Honor is not completely realistic and that is fine. As long as it has the grounds of realism I don't care. A good example of this is feats, they can be written off as in world legends about what these warriors can do. Say there was someone who managed to barely escape a Tiandi, they might claim that although initially they were winning the fight, the Tiandi seemed to become rejuvenated near the end (Tiandi's T3 & T4). Stories are told and myths are created, it is how humans are. An in a world where the writing team fell to a writing cliché of having a magical rock (draconite) that does everything under the sun, healing, poison, raising the dead, brainwashing, and makes the strongest weapons and armor. I think a Shugoki or a Nobushi being a gender that doesn't fit with their real world inspiration is the least of the problems with For Honor's balance of realism and fantasy.

As someone who has played this hero for 70+ reps in mm and plenty in scrims/tourneys pre and post all nerfs, I'd honestly say she wouldnt need much. She's not fundamentally op or bad. She has a solid foundation. But the numbers need tweaking. I personally would love to see the gunshot be treated more like a gank tool and- or to finish ppl off. Firstly, lower the revenge gain on it (back to original), take away 2-3 of the damage on it and add it to her heavy starter, heavy finisher and dodgeattack dmg. In groupfights you usually dont have time to gunshot (and cant do the confirmed one if hit extrenally) as it leaves you vaunrable for peels, but if you dont do it, your dmg output is quite low without it. Secondly, to aid her extremely weak 1sies without making her too opressive, make a blanket change to her plank parry timing so that you have to parry roughly the same timing as any other unblockable in the game. Right now you dont even have to react, you just have to wait untill late into the animation, then parry every time without risking eating the soft feinted GB. On top of this her un-confirmed gunshot after heavy block or whiff should be sped up to unreactable speed to give her a read mixup much like afeera and kyoshin. You dodge and risk eating the undodgable light finisher, or you look to block the light and risk eating the grab. You could also argue that her dodge forward heby dmg is low after nerf, but seeing as it still after that serves alot of uses, no real need to touch it with the above adjustments. Just like the rest of her kit honestly. Like i said, good foundation, poor tuning but easily fixable!

My main complaint is just the move set doesn’t compare to todays reworks and released heroes. Most hero’s have a bash opener, higher damage light attacks and other various options for getting a player to react but this hero can be lighted out of her only real opener which is her dodge forward heavy. And her pistol blast after heavy attacks reguardless if they are blocked or not really puts her down compared to heroes in the knight faction and the samurai. If they’d completely overhaul the pirates move set I guarantee she would see more play time as 90% of the time you play the hero your eating damage via light interrupts and or hyper armor. I can agree that people don’t like the Chinese aspect of the hero as they wanted a Caribbean based pirate but imo I don’t think a lot of people really care about the ethnicity of heroes as the entires cast at this point is from around the world.

My only complaint is and was the hyper armor. The 50/50s I dont mind, the dodge cancels, the gun infinite ammo thing, that doesnt matter to me. I just cant comprehend why Pirate of all characters has Hyperarmor when Warden who has literal armor doesnt. Same with Lawbringer and a couple other characters. Then you have characters like Raider, Medjay, and Jorm who are really buff and/or maniac beserker types that can muscle through it which justifies hyperarmor. So why does Pirate who has neither armor nor the beserker mentality/ripped muscles, get hyperarmor? I do have a small disappointment that we didnt get a male variant so we could go Jack Sparrow with pirate but overall thats minor compared to hyperarmor

@@vapor_snake920 I think you missed the first half of my comment. They have physical armor. That should count as hyper armor. Kensei, Warmonger, and JJ have more armor than Pirate and they have hyperarmor. Warden and Centurion have hyperarmor bashes not hyper armor heavies.

Bruh who the fuck thinks gunshot having limited shots is a good idea. Reload however is an intresting concept i think. However shot would have to do more damage, feed relative amount of revange and pirate would have to gain ways to reload the gun mid chain with move that does damage. Potentially new move which would be fun i think. Not some useless shit that is straight out of turn based game "alright. you shot, now let enemy do something while you reload". No, non of this bs. Keep the pressure up for potentially high-ish damage move with another damage move that puts you in another mixup from her dodge recovery. Maybe a grab-like move, similar to medjey or shugo got

I like using her now, but yeah, she's on the bottom of the barrel as far as viability, whoever says otherwise is a moron suffering from PTSD. Either way, I hope she gets the Gryphon treatment, lots of nerfs, then a couple of years pass when nobody hates the hero anymore, and you steadily improve the hero. Gryphon is in a pretty good place right now, hopefully Pirate will get her deserved buffs, as long as they don't make her as stupid as she was on release.

I enjoyed this character when she released. I thought her basis off of Zheng Yi Sao was neat and a welcome surprise to the typical Pirate idea. I wasn't a fan of the genderlocking because it restricts fashion and roleplay possibilities (although I usually pick female anyway.), but it didn't bother me that much. At the end of the day, I can't help but wish there was a way of getting people to understand that wild baby rage precludes us from having nice things.

My pitch for a Pirate balance is make her pistol blast do the same amount of damage as her pistol grab, and in exchange make it so you can't pistol blast or pistol grab off the 2nd heavy. That'd decrease the pistol dependency while also making her overall damage output higher. That and give her some range back, Shinobi literally uses a farm tool and has better reach with the lunges.

if her pistol did the grab pistol damage then you'd get a 22+14 damage opener heavy. That's 36 damage for an opener which is INSANE damage for an opener

Not to mention Highlanders offensive stance heavy deals 36 on one hit with his tier 2 (30 without), and that's an unblockable attack he can spam.

Slanderous has talked nonstop about trying to give her a reload mechanic. While her having infinite ammo is a stretch and seems to break the realism in the game, we've had other things implemented that aren't fully realistic. Plus I don't see a reload mechanic working with her at all.

There’s no reason a reload mechanic cannot work. Choosing between having more damage in your next mixup or guaranteed damage now already exists in game. Personally I think the realism angle is nothing compared to the potential gameplay.

I don't see why it wouldn't. Give her a backwards GB input that can be used in recovery to reload, then make the gun blast do SIGNIFICANTLY more damage. Like 15 or 18. So she can hold onto that burst damage for whenever it would be most useful. Like landing a walk the plank into headshot for the highest damage attack in the game, just needing some setup beforehand.

@@SoI_Badguy you’d need to a lot more than damage buff to help out with needing a reload mechanic. A good point of reference is the character Happy Chaos from fighting game, Guilty Gear Strive, who uses guns a great deal in his kit. Because he can reload his guns up to six bullets, their effectiveness involve a range of not merely big damage, but also frame advantage, chain extenders, enhanced neutral pressure by being able to shoot at any time, etc. To put it in perspective, if you wanna justify pirate having a reload mechanic, her gun shots need to the power equivalent to high damage, a feintable long range bash that can shoot and deal less revenge feed, deals bleed damage or sets people on fire, and can act as a tool that leads directly into her 50/50 mix up.

I do think the community hates her most because of the vision she represents (and I am talking feats here) Her entire kit is based upon the least fun idea in the game, “offscreen projectiles”. The amount of crap her feats brings are so annoying that players simply won’t forgive Ubi. Pirate along with many other heroes will remain disliked simply because of their feats, which takes an acceptable hero and takes them over the edge into hated. Summed up: projectile feats hurts the game and pirate is one of the big reminders for why.

I'm in that minority of stupid people that still thinks pirate is fun even after all these nerfs but I cannot deny her moveset has had some problems since release. For a hero with dodge cancels she somehow feels very one note whilst heroes like Zhan hu, Orochi and Tiandi are more unpredictable with what they can throw, while with pirate you kinda always want to revolve around her WTP since it's her highest damaging move meanwhile her chained light being one of the most depressing undodgeables in the game with that small tracking range on a hero which in her "glory" days would skeet across points to catch people with her bash. Yes she could still really use some number tweaks to make her better and I still naively hope the devs will stop slapping high revenge feed on some moves to make them unvialable for ganks like with Shinobi's sickle rain and seek more creative ways to prevent 100-0/infinite ganks but I know such ideas aren't very easy to find sadly else we would've had them by now.

Most people hate the fact of gender locking at this point because most of the community are guys, and most heros don't really have a reason to be genderlocked. I just think there was a better way to go about implementing her gun. It could’ve added a much more original gameplay feature than just another orange flash. Playing around with multiple guns on a bandolier for limited high damage shots, or a reload that took so long it had to be shot sparingly, would have been such a different pace of character from the current roster.

Besides the gun, she just seemed to have all the same tricks as every new character that gets released. Spinning dodge attack, bash, feint into guardbreak. Less unique then it sounded like it was going to be. Gender lock makes sense for Valk, and Warmommy and a few other characters, but i didnt realized that the pirate population was historically know as female dominate.

It's got a lot of stuff but none of that stuff is particularly good. She's got HA but her heavies do 27 damage so she can't trade all that well, dodge cancels are good but without a deflect/superior block dodge or a bash its not that good in comparison to the others. She's got an unblockable thats incredibly mid, an undodgeable light so less damage than the other undodgeables and average ganks that feed a ton of revenge

​@@tabula_rosa charters with kit like that isn't the problem, it's the execution and them not and new moves and mechanics to the game for example light attacks that can be charged for 500 ms-700ms and can also gain a property like being inhanced when charged, or zone attacks that can be thrown from any direction and have different properties. Bashes that soft into some type of moves instead of being cancelled, or more backstep light and zone recovery cancels ubi dev team doesn't have any imagination when it comes to FH and the community is part of the blame

I had taken a long break from this game and came back to the already nerfed pirate. I was confused why another chinese character got added to the 5th group, instead of just adding her to the chinese faction. I think they should make some western pirate armor and a parrot effect. That would make me unlock the character.

I'm personally more in the camp of disliking hyper armor, not because I think it's always a bad choice, but because I tried playing zerker at some point and once I learned how the combos worked I instantly began shredding through other players thanks to the constant hyper armor. It just didn't feel fun to mindlessly hit buttons and win. I don't mind hyper armor as a mechanic if it's used on certain moves to allow for trading and interesting fight dynamics, but I absolutely hate it when it's overused on a character. Shugoki with his hyper armor lights was also incredibly annoying to fight against, so was Hito upon release. On Warmonger's follow up heavies or Tiandi's forward dodge attack I don't mind it one bit, same for Centurion or Warlord etc. anyone with a move or two that has hyper armor. As a chain property though? No thanks. I think Ubi just doesn't understand how strong hyper armor actually is. It's treated the same as unblockables or undodgeables because it's also one of the several properties a move can have, but it works far differently and can be far, far stronger in the right circumstances. Raider with stunning tap was similar, his hyper armor was just constant 40+ damage pressure during his chains because the hyper armor started so damn early. However, except for Berserker I don't think I could currently name a character whose hyper armor gets on my nerves at all, so that's a good thing.

I loved pirate. Needed some fixes for sure. Confirmed gunshot on external heavy hitstun was definitely not intended and far to strong. Maybe the range of the gunshot on whiff, Sure. But they put her in the ground. She is basicly unplayable at a high level now due to all her offense being reactable, and even if you do land something, the damage is far too low now.

That's because you're part of the western audience. Piracy was never restricted to the Caribbean. There were the Barbary pirates in the Mediterranean, the piracy in the persian gulf and throughout the trade routes along the coasts of Africa, and then the east asian pirates during the Ming Dynasty. With the factions we have in game it was very apparently obvious which one they were going to pick as an inspiration.

I used to like playing pirate. True, she was overtuned, but thats now why i liked her. Back then, her kit was actually good for the game. Not the stunlock and eveything else, that was a problem and it had to go (funny how ppl complained about her and not shino btw). No, what i belive was a good thing was her team fight ability. She was made to deal with those hyper armour team fight moster that dominated the meta back then. And not like full guard character, that are a problem on their own, but with a reactive and fast gameplay. It was fun. To bad after all the nerf she does more damage then good for your team. Not to mention, the various nerf like the removal of the soft faint from foward dodge make her feel clunky, and the frame disvantage after gunshot is even worst. They could have simply reduced the window of effective stun like they did with other pin/knock down. Anyway, i dont care about mass opinion, but freeze, you starting the video with "i hate this character" dont help with the problem. The very reason he is so hated is because content creator where saying how much they hate her when she came out. I remember watching daddylaw for exemple saying those exact word. She never deserved so much hate, and will probabily never get out of this hole, but we can act better. No hero deserve to be treated like this (except shinibi and kyoshin cought ) Also, seriously? Ppl are still complaining about the gun shot in a game with teleport, corruption aoe, bomb, shild, and hyperarmour. You know what is more fantasy than pirate gun? I agree and while I love Freeze, it's often been disturbing to note that Freeze says this about almost EVERY Chinese-based character that's been introduced. The only exception has been Zhanhu. I think you're misunderstanding the perceived problem with genderlocked female heroes my friend... Valkyrie, Nobushi, Warmonger, Nuxia etc. are mostly all fine except for Pirate and - I would argue - Afeera. It's not that we hate a female hero. It's really that we hate a hero that doesn't make sense, Male OR Female. It feels forced and in a way, presumptuous. This isn't specific to For Honor... most Ubisoft games (R6 and Assasin's Creed for example) all slowly - but eventually - veer into fantasy, away from realism. By doing that, they don't bind themselves to any established logic. They only have to abide by their own rules. and that's fine, but it is intellectually lazy for a multi billion $ company. If you want to allude that we are all prejudiced idiots for not accepting it, fair enough. But then you can't deny that Ubisoft subscribes to a particular ideology they push with their projects. Considering that what the community WANTS vs. what the community GETS is very much hit or miss, the least we get to do is complain. This has been the For Honor reality since its inception.

Pirate was broken at release but every hero at release is going to be OP or overtuned in some way, dev's even said they do it sometimes on purpose and then they try to balance everything afterwards. The problem is they listen to the small majority of people who always complain about a hero being "too strong" or "overtuned" when they really aren't or people still complain about a character even after some nerfs/changes, people just don't adapt or know how to counter a hero, that's it. Pirate did need some nerfs or adjustments but they nerfed her too much...The speed of her doge attacks, chain speed, dmg, and reach didn't need to be nerfed because they were fine. The infinite was the only problem IMO. Even the revenge gain didn't need to be increased. The big problem is the community, there's always going to be people saying a hero is too strong when they aren't or a hero is too weak when they aren't. It's rare when the community as a whole agrees on something balance wise.

More then 95% of this games player base is sweaty guys and most guys prefer to create characters based on themselves. I'm completely fine with games giving me the option to create female characters, but I am sick and tired of games gender locking characters and making all these woke changes like removing the male and female symbols for ESG investment points.
