Upon this May's fair stage, I mark the turning of seventy years in my life's grand play. Forty-five years hence, I chanced upon my Juliet, whose beauty and grace doth rival the very stars in their celestial dance. As the sands of time flow through the hourglass, my love for her doth but grow, her charm and desirability blossoming like the sweetest rose in the garden of my affections.

Personally I like the 1996 version because that is the one I saw first and I grew up with that version but the 1968 version is so good and is so beautifully shot and this song just represents the beauty and tragedy of the story and the movie.

I prefer adaptations to be set at the time they were written as, therefore I prefer this version to 1996. I prefer Jane Austen adaptations to be set in the Georgian/Regency era to the modern age and so on with any classic work. I don't see the point in having it in modern day. Why does it being set in the past mean people can't relate to it? I just don't understand it.

I concurr yet the priest played by Paul Giamatti. Mr. GIAMATTI portrayal is much more inbued with love & concern for Romeo & his Juliet. The extent of anguish when the priest sees his plans go awry in juliets death is a high point in the film. The priest from the filming 1967 is okay but he just doesn't bring the emotion out as does Paul Giamatti. My partner says Douglass booth as romeo, Oliver hussey as juliet put & Giamatti put into the newer film would be spectacular! maybe someone in the future will be able to switch those characters into the new film. To me, both tybalts are good as are the king, though I did like mercutio in the first film better, also thought the nurse maid in the newest film is much better.....

The music was adapted from period music of the time and played on period instruments. The costumes were spot on. And the actors were absolutely perfect. I always appreciated that he used age-appropriate actors for the main characters. Definitely the best version of this classic love story. In my opinion, modern versions set in modern times just do not do justice to Shakespeare!

@spemka
@spemka 8 күн бұрын
It entirely it depends on if someone is willing to take Romeo and Juliet seriously in the first place. The 90’s version is self-aware in its parody, so someone who is prone to making fun of Romeo and Juliet would prefer its spin on the story and would find it more entertaining.

What is a youth? Impetuous fire. What is a maid? Ice and desire. The world wags on, a rose will bloom.... It then will fade: so does a youth, so does the fairest maid. Comes a time when one sweet smile has a season for a while.... Then love's in love with me. Some they think only to marry, others will tease and tarry. Mine is the very best parry. Cupid he rules us all. Caper the cape, but sing me the song, Death will come soon to hush us along. Sweeter than honey... and bitter as gall, Love is a task and it never will pall. Sweeter than honey and bitter as gall. Cupid rules us all."

A beautiful melody that indeed exudes a touch of the Renaissance, very well composed. What a bittersweet memento mori. Everything is transient and even the most beautiful flower wilts eventually.

I watched this this year, my first year in high school. This movie has got to be the best love story of all times and one of my favorite movies of all time. I have never really felt so much pain while reading a story, and the song didn't help at all. Especially since Juliet is absolutely stunning in this. This is way better than the Leo version I think. I hated that one.

@@plusfour1 You mistook my intentions, I was simply saying that the "Leo version" of Romeo and Juliet is shot and scripted in a more comedic fashion than its older counterpart (aka the 1968 movie). Nowhere did I say that young love was funny (though I do believe that it is often quite ridiculous, and I agree that Shakespeare did intend to portray that in Romeo and Juliet). Hopefully that cleared up any misconceptions about what I meant.

We watched this movies this year, my freshman year. Me and my friend Jacky couldn't stop staying how cute Romeo and Tybalt was. This is how I met my (ex)boyfriend. He was joking around calling himself Tybalt. He heard me say Tybalt was hot when talking to Jacky. He was like "So, you think I'm hot" I said yeah and we got to know each other and eventually started dating, then broke up because of his ex, also named Katelyn
