👍 Hello Cathy, what a magnificent and healthy looking Owl. They are one of my fave' birds and on the few occasions I have seen them here in the UK they gave me a massive thrill. They are not native here either yet have been breeding here for 30+ years now, though many do not want them :( here as they also predate Hen Harriers and any other raptors in their territory. I hope your Owl is very lucky as he will need to be, having been in captivity so long and now in a busy park, full of danger. A great video to watch, thank you my friend. 👍◕‿◕

Oh my goodness Cathy! It's been so long, that's on me, I went to visit your page today and seen this video and literally gasped outloud. All I could think before I even watched this was oh I hope and pray they do not recapture him, he deserves to me in the wild after 12 years behind bars. I can't even begin to imagine his life in an enclosure for such a long period of time. A taste of freedom like this, and being able to hunt and survive on his own is absolutely ASTOUNDING. I can't even begin to imagine the goosebumps and giddy delight you must have had while filming this beautiful owl. I'm so happy he was being monitored. Thank you so much for documenting and sharing this astound story of Mr. Falco, I wish him great health and continued success in the wild.

Thank you dear Heather. It was very concerning the first week as he was not eating and no one knew what to expect. You are so right - it was amazing that after 12 years in the zoo Flaco learned to fly well and hunt for its meals in a short time. He is still in the park in a different area from the zoo. The constant concerns are city related (the same for all the birds) rat poison, buildings and vehicles. Hoping for the very best for this amazing owl as I know you are too! Warm greetings, Cathy

Flaco looks pretty pleased with himself. Rat poison is a big concern. There is a rat poison now available which kills rodents by canceling their trigger for thirst, and when eating this poison the rat stops drinking and dies of dehydration. Apparently only rodents are affected by this poison and it is safe for other birds and animals. I wonder if it would be an idea to ban the use of regular rat poison in the vicinity of Central Park as surely other animals would also be affected. Great video Cathy👍
@quote_nature Жыл бұрын
Yes, you make excellent points about rat poison. It is supposedly not used in Central Park but I do not believe this is true. A Barred Owl died in an accident in the park and rat poison was found when they tested the owl. Rats are a serious problem in New York City and everyone is very concerned for the owl, the hawks and any creatures that might eat them. I wish it could be banned or alternatives would be used. Thank you for the info about rat poison and your great comments. Best regards, Cathy

Hi. How are you? I would like to ask you a question…. After that, Flaco is in the Central Park? Or he has gone somewhere?😢
@quote_nature Жыл бұрын
Yes, Flaco appears to be doing well and is still in Central Park. He has been seen in the northern part of the park. Thank you for asking!

He actually looks pretty happy and those birds seemed to enjoy his company. they never attacked.

I hope so. The little birds do make a lot of noise to get the owl to fly out of their territory but it does not work. Flaco is just trying to rest. Thank you for watching! Have a great new week. Best regards

So they announced that they will stop trying to recapture the Owl as it's shown the ability to capture it's own food amazingly despite being imprinted

not so sure that’s a good thing.. he needs to have an option (nest -hint! hint!) maybe.. I could well be wrong. I’ve watched the liznm channel EU eagle owl wild cams when there’s a pair nesting. Flaco not only is imprinted that This is his territory; in nature their territory is 100 sq acres approximately.

Yes, it is amazing that this owl was able to hunt after living in the zoo for 12 years. The zoo staff will still be on call if the owl's health changes or it needs help. We don't know how Flaco will fare or even if it will stay... Hoping for the best.

@@quote_nature since they have so large an area -mostly in nature from what I’ve seen- the males will have an area, seek/ call for a mate.. this likely isn’t a time of year a male adult would travel (rather hope not).

There's so many unknowns since he has lived most of his life in a zoo. He is too hard to catch at this point. We are just waiting and watching.
