I saw this over 40 years ago when I was in medical school. I was completely in love with the show and horses and all of life. My life took a sad turn, but I will never forget the joy of seeing this show. And it certainly made one think of difference between the classes in England.

In the USA it was first broadcast in the summer of 1980...not on Masterpiece Theatre, as so many of the more classy UK productions were, but as a stand-alone. My parents were expat Brits and the three of us watched Flambards together. The shots of those early aeroplanes, esp the looping the loop scene, were amazing. And the horses were beautiful. It was a class-act series. Nothing like it on American television.

Brought a tear to my eye. I remember this sequence well - we used to watch the programme (or "show" as they say now) back in the 70's when we were kids. I loved this song back then - and wondered why it was never released as a single in the charts. Missed opportunity.

The 1970's was blessed with many dramas evoking the Edwardian era.This was a tribute to that vanishing generation that had suffered through the first world war.I was a child during the 70's and was blessed through my Grandparents and their friends to have a connection to the Edwardian age. I loved the Flambards and even during its original run in the late 1970s realised it was a tribute to a lost age and generation. God bless them all!

I’m 73. My husband and I watched this in Ohio on PBS. I don’t know the year. PBS never ran it again. Christmas of 2004 he was in and out of the hospital. I don’t know how he did it, but he remembered the series and somehow ordered the DVDs for a Christmas gift. He died Jan 24. I watched them over and over on the laptop I had bought for him to take to the hospital for a stem cell transplant. ❤

I was a kid when they aired it in America (probably a few years after it first came out in Britain). My sisters and I were totally hooked on it! We used to sing this song all the time. So much so that an uncle of ours who visited from India started calling all three of us "Christina" :-)

You're correct. This wonderful presentation was aired on PBS-TV, Channel 13 (New York) in 1980. I believe this program was aired in the U.K. in 1978 or 1979. It's similar to "Rumpole of the Bailey".

This was one of my favourite series; I would read the books, and when I finished the last one, I'd wait a couple of weeks and start over (another favourite was the Ruth Hollis Fly By Night series). The song in this video clip is missing an entire stanza from where Christina and Dorothy were at Elm Park before Christina returned to Flambards.. To the best of my recollection, it is: 'I’ll sing you no stories of young widowed ladies Gallantly crying lace handkerchief tears Instead let me sing you a song of Christina Brave in her love and good, tender in years I’ll chant you no requiems or bitter resentments as joy in the dorm and a bird in the sky Before she’ll cherish the days of her roses Tomorrow she looks in the eye I'll sing you a song of Christina...' I am not too sure about the 6th verse - if anyone knows the correct words for that line, please share :-)
@MsBraeswood
@MsBraeswood 2 жыл бұрын
The additional verse isn't in this clip because it is from a different scene, later in the series. You can hear it on KZbin--search for Flambards soundtrack, part B. You have most of the lyrics right; here is what I was able to make out: I’ll sing you no stories of young widowed ladies Gallantly crying lace-handkerchief tears, Instead let me sing you a song of Christina Brave in her loving though tender in years I’ll chant you no requiems of bitter resentment There’s joy in the dawn and a bird in the sky Behold she’ll cherish the days of the roses Tomorrow she looks in the eye

Edward Smith Edward or William as the case may be, it was really nothing. As a postscript, your query made me look up the Indonesian obsessed Fanshawe and I found and amazing quote. The intro arpeggio was indeed A dominant 7th, down a fifth from D major. Precisely what my only friend a late African American bassist said it would be, at a now long-defunct school where I was sent over 35 years ago. Here's to what once was. #BlackLivesMatter

I can't keep away from this channel. This was such a big part of growing up in the 1970s for me. Can anyone help me with a mystery regarding the lyrics of this song? I'd swear there was a line about "wine loosened ladies" but it's not here in this recording. Was there a different (TV friendly) version written for the series that was different from a version that might have been on a record or album?
