Here’s my take on these. If you already have flame king, stay with them. If you lose your Allen wrench just tape it to the shaft of the fill adapter or hold it with a rubber band. Easy fix. If you don’t have refills already then I’d definitely take a look at the Mr Heater brand, but they are more expensive than Flame King. I have 8 flame king tanks and been using them for years with no complaints. Flame kind also does sell a rebuild kit if the o-ring would unseat itself. Mr Heater does not offer this. Also I like the bright green color of flame king versus the black color on Mr heater. Makes finding them a lot easier to find amongst the clutter in my shop I would think.

Nice comparison video. You can tell you're definitely a a fuel keg fan. You cut down the Flame King at every turn. Let's start with the stand comparisons. The Flame King stand is bulkier and harder to transport fully assembled than the Fuel Keg one. This is true, but are you going to take the stand and a 20lb tank with you camping? Probably not. The Flame King stand allows you to refill on any flat surface. The Fuel Keg one needs to be close to an edge of a table/stair/tailgate to fit the bottle under it. If that's the case, why use the Fuel Keg stand at all? If you attach the adapter to the 20lb tank before you flip it over, it's very stable. As far as the Allen key needed to operate the bleed valve, I'd prefer that to a spring loaded assembly made of pot metal any day of the week. Pot metal is very brittle, corrodes quickly and is subject to breaking easily if mishandled. How hard is it to either tape or use rubber bands to keep the tool on the adapter? The little tab again is no big deal either. All you need to do is mark the tank with a Sharpie to where it is. For my money, I'll stick with the Flame King refillable tanks. I appreciate the time it took to provide this content, but it's definitely one sided.

I just picked up a FREE Flame King from the local County office that is trying to encourage a reduction in the use of disposable cylinders/tanks, yeah its Califiornia. So, I maybe a bit prejudiced. What I think I saw from this video is that on the refill device for the Flame King the "so hard to see "black" plastic alignment" pin can be removed entirely from the refill device thus negating any difficulty in seeing it or paying any attention to alignment besides locating the Allen hole to the front so it can be easily accessed. The groove in the valve is a milling area to allow an over pressure valve installation. At least that is what I can see so far in my exploration of this full and new to me tank. The Fuel Keg appears to have the over pressure valve in the tank itself and not part of the valve. From reading the comments here I interpret the pin on the Fuel Keg refill apparatus provides some physical function of disabling the valve with the key ring. The video was shaky and not detailed enough for me to make an absolute determination. It would be easy for the presenter to turn that valve while the full tank is not attached to see if any propane is expended. I do my own refills of the disposable tanks and use no stand what-so-ever, just turn over the 20lb tank on any flat surface - they stand up fine just by themselves, but I am careful. This works just fine with no stand; however, I do like the compactness of the Fuel Keg stand but see no reason for a stand at all. The Flame King stand is just way too bulky for my consideration. I will not be getting any of the two kits, only the Flame King refill adapter which I find to not be necessary as I already can refill the disposable tanks but will do so as I think it will be easier to refill multiple Flame King tanks (or the disposable tanks) at the same time. I also have 2MM and 5/64" Allen wrenches in a "T" handle configuration - so that is a very non-issue to me. I already use Brass caps so that is a non-issue too.
@bluenetmarketing5 ай бұрын
FYI - It is illegal to transport or travel with the refilled disposable tanks, so be careful to use them only at home. Refilled Flam King and Fuel Keg are supposedly safe for travel from what I have heard, but do your own due diligence on that point.

Both has pros and cons. I have both. What’s nice about the flame king, is that you can buy a hose with the fill valve on it for little or nothing and you don’t have to have the tank bottle hanging off of the 20lb tank. My preference. But the fuel keg is totally proprietary, meaning you have to use the fill device for those tanks. However the tanks appear to be built better.
@Autonomous153 ай бұрын
Flame king is proprietary too.
@AndreaC_3032 ай бұрын
You can refill the Mr Heater keg with a nonproprietary nozzle, the kind that also works on green bottles. I don’t know why everyone says you can’t but I’ve now done it several times. You won’t be able to get it as full, because the gas discharge ring won’t work.
@maxsodak84172 ай бұрын
@ that’s the problem. I’ve been filling both. Flame king can be filled “full” with generic hoses. But the Fuel Keg can only be filled “full” with its proprietary hose. Hence the issue. That’s like filling your gas tank half full before going on vacation. But as I stated before, the Fuel Keg tanks are of a much better build. My preference are the new ones, but I have several of the old. 😎

@rickywrenn23 күн бұрын
The one thing safety wise that sets these two apart is the bleed valve. On every other bleed valve I’ve seen is if you open it or it became loose for any reason, gas escapes into wherever the tank resides. The only way that happens with the Mr. Heater is if you have it attached to the refill adapter. That metal post depresses the valve to allow air to escape allowing a fill. As soon as you remove the adapter, the valve is closed to prevent gas from escaping. So. even if the valve switch was opened by any means, while not connected to the filler, it would not leak from the bleeder port on the side of the valve. Convenient and much safer design. This is a very valid reason to pick this system in and of itself in my opinion.
@monzoola502223 күн бұрын
Good to know, I was willing to keep track of the hex key for a Flame King because I thought there was an increased risk of leakage due to the simplicity/ease of use with the Mr. Heater. Thanks for clearing that up!
@rickywrenn23 күн бұрын
@@monzoola5022The engineers must have known a child or bouncing around could cause that ring to turn. I believe there must be a spring that gets depressed when the post on the refill adapter is screwed down. When you unscrew it, the spring pushes the valve closed. That’s my guess. That is quite a good design to make that tank more safe. There is a tube inside of the Flameking 1 pound cylinders that allow liquid to escape at ~80 percent full leaving head space for expansion in heat. I feel quite sure the other 1 pound cylinders employ this tube also. On disposable cylinders, you have to guess and weigh. Plus, the metal is thinner and not designed for repeated fills. Plus those Schrader type valves are prone to leaking.
@rickywrenn23 күн бұрын
One more thing. That valve is there for a reason. Even though gas does not escape with the bleeder in the open position unconnected from the adapter, it is probably a secondary safety system. The cut off valve that you turn should always be in the closed position after filling for maximum safety.

I’ve watched multiple videos on the fuel keg. Some people think the ring opener system can bleed fuel any time, so it’s good to show that it can’t. I’ve also seen concerns that the white ring in the center can come out. Still waiting to see if that issue is real.
@rickywrenn23 күн бұрын
The tank i like best is the Manchester 1lb tank. It is longer but it has a shut off valve and no plastic bushing to come out. It is all metal/brass that seals. Has this issue (by another user) been resolved? 6 days ago Fuelkegs have a flaw during the welding part. Sometimes the welders leave the beads inside the tank without cleaning them out. And they get stuck in the valve if you turn the tank upside down. I ordered 4 FuelKegs and only one of them didnt have the beads. You can shake them around to hear it. So i ordered 15 more of them to Home Depot so i can pick out 3 good ones. 10 of them were full of beads. One had only a small amount of beads, and 4 were perfect. I kept those 4. So now i have 5 perfect FuelKegs out of 19 ordered.

Pro and Cons. Mr Heater stand I like it's compatability but to short, must have a over hang, having to pick up a 20lb cylinder much higher more problematic if full. While Flame King stand is high enough to use at ground level when 20lb is full. The cylinder valve idea I like on MH but can be potential problem if accidentally gets turned or kids messing with them *(just learned something new the valve switch only functions while refilling the cylinder). While FK is having to keep up with an allen wrench but valve is more scure, but can still be refilled without it just can't fill to max full. For me I got the FK because the kit was on clearance for $15.⁰⁰ and got the last four extra cylinders for $6.&Chng each, plus another 20% off all is why economically I went with FK. Been refilling used coleman cylinders for years using a simple adapter and a pair of 45 degree forceps to pull the pressure valve open to get max fill. There's pros and cons to just about everything. The choice is in your hands choose wisely grasshopper.

Of course they will be mumbling something like "I just wanted to see what it was there for" while the fire department is dousing the flames on your burning house - but it's a little too late by then. IMHO, needing an allen key to burn down the campground (or your house) seems like a MUCH safer option! Your Curious George friend is not likely to be carrying his own allen wrench, or if they're prone to carrying a pocket full of allen wrenches, hopefully they won't have the correct sized one...

The fuel keg's tool-less vent seems more convenient, but i would be really concerned about inadvertent actuation and/or tampering. Does the purge vent only work when attached to the refill adapter or will it vent regardless? To that end the flame king set screw is definitely more secure and i just stuck it to the refill adapter with a magnet so i wouldn't lose it. Speaking of the alignment peg and overfill valve, flame king doesn't say the peg needs to be aligned and it isn't even long enough to interact with anything in the bottle's fitting. You demerited flame king for a step you just made up, which definitely isn't a fair criticism.

I bought both brands. Fuel Keg build quality is far superior. I don't know what's to like about the bright green color but to each his own. Most of the Flame King bottles I received wobble badly, meaning the round support ring is welding higher than the bottom center of canister. That should never happen for a long term refillable canister. Even the one time use Coleman bottles don't do that. Come on Flame King, really?! This was my one big issue with the Flame King and why I went with Fuel Keg. Quality is just better. As for the plastic caps. They will strip easily. When you buy a full tank at, say, tractor supply, i'm hearing that they are not 100% full but like maybe 80% full. i'm thinking it's to make room for expansion? If that's the case, your 1lb bottles, with the air bled out, seem to be filled completely to the very top - and no room for expansion. I this not a concern? thanks

On the Fuel Keg, Do Not Do Not Do Not try to open the little brass screw. It' sealed and will STRIP Out!
@Garth20113 ай бұрын
The Mr. Heater stand seems better however, I believe they should make those brackets taller so you have more room to reach into the tank open/close knob. I'm unsure what those stems are for on the valve and tanks. My only other concern with the two would be the Mr. Heater bleeder valve seems to be more prone to stick open or leak vs. the Flame King positive off/open threaded bleeder. What bothers me about the industry is they didn't set a standard for refill tanks and those valves so you cannot interchange Flame King tanks with Mr. Heater on a Flame King EZ refill valve. Can you imagine...how many versions of valves and tanks will be coming at us as the state laws come into play eliminating disposable canisters? The industry really needs to have an accepted interface for ALL valves and tanks so folks are not required to have as many refill valves as they do brand name tanks. That idea/plan will prevent having a bunch of proprietary refill hardware.

It seems the Fuel Keg is the way to go. Anyone know if one can fill these one pound can from a 500 gallon propane tank that came with my house?
@teddyjredmond3 ай бұрын
The issue with the 500 gallon tank is that you cannot invert it. Inverting the tank is necessary to allow filling liquid propane vs propane gas.

So can i refill a Fuel Keg at my nearby tractor supply or do i need their special nozzle thingy?

You need the special nozzle thingy

Doubt that large propane refill stores would refill either the Flame King or Fuel Keg 1 lb bottles, too small not worth the time for an employee to come out and do, even if they had the adaptors on hand.. imo😊

I bought six fuel kegs. 4 failed after the first use. The safety valves failed and stopped purging when filling. Seems to be a common issue.

Wow, sorry to hear that. I haven't experienced that issue myself. It's the first time I've heard about it.

I had to wiggle mine to get the pin to seat properly before it filled. Hopefully they'll update the bottle in the future where it's tapered so the pin will properly line up the first time. It's definitely a pain.

I don't own any of those but noticed that possibility in this video. Those valves are likely to wear and fail while the Flame King is a simple screw thread.

It will not leak but will still get hooked, tangled and eventually broken I would think. I prefer the Allen key. Keep it attached to your filler. Also that ring may interfere with some products when screwing on.

Both these systems tanks need a rubber seal in the cap. Plastic cap with no rubber seal will leak.
