BTS talk about spoons a lot in their songs. That’s because in Korea if they say you have a golden spoon that means you come from the wealthy class. If you have a silver spoon you’re more like upper middle class, and if you have a dirty spoon you are from the poor class. So basically your place in the societal hierarchy is based on what color your spoon is, but BTS is saying, “don’t try to classify me. I’m not a spoon I’m a person.”
@cynthiaperez223211 ай бұрын
You should add that in the beginning BTS were called dirt spoons by netizens in Korea. (They were looked down on because they were from a small company and considered upstarts.)

@@cynthiaperez2232 The spoon philosophy: it is better to start dirty & become clean & shiny, than to be clean & shiny & end tarnished & dirty
@jilliandougherty985211 ай бұрын
I always wondered after learning about “golden” spoons in Korea, if this was a common reference in other countries also. In America, we … at least used to, refer to being born rich as “ silver” spoons. You were “born with a silver spoon in your mouth”. Hence the 80’s sitcom show “Silver spoons”. I’m pretty sure it originated in England which is why we use it in America, So now I am curious if other countries also use this term…

The "mixing" tables where they iron Jin or play around with literal fire are hilarious. The spoon reference is an advanced version of the Western "born with a silver spoon in your mouth" sayings - but they have more levels, there's silver spoons and golden spoons and the very lowest ones are "dirty spoons".

The words BOY MEETS WHAT are a teaser for what was to come in their next album, WINGS. The pre-release track for that album was the solo by j-hope entitled Boy Meets Evil. The WINGS album was iconic and broke records. It is the album which arguably put them at the top and its title track was non other than Blood, Sweat and Tears. You MUST react to the MV for Boy Meets Evil. I think you’ll love it.
@cynthiaperez223211 ай бұрын
Although the lyrics might be misleading, this song is really about Korean societal expectations for young people. In the Korean educational system, high school students study nonstop. There's enormous pressure on them to do well-- by parents, by teachers and by the society as a whole. All the studying they do culminates in 1 test, given on 1 day only for the entire senior class. The outcome of this test determines a person's future. It not only determines qualifications for college, but it decides which university you can go to... and that university determines job placement. Students no only study in class but many kids to go to cram schools after class, often not arriving home until 10pm. The pressure they endure is enormous. The lyrics of fire tell the students that it's okay to not be the best and that they're only young once and that this is the time when they should make mistakes. (something they won't hear from their families). And that's why Suga says "I'll forgive you" at the end.
@nevaladder11 ай бұрын
The spoon thing is a cultural reference about socio-economic classes. Koreans make a big deal of whether you are of high standing (golden spoon), the middle class (silver spoon), or the lower class (dirty spoon). RM is saying don't judge my potential by my background. Youths cannot be boxed in by their roots. For a party song, it takes a lot of shots at boomers. 😂

Okay so my notes for your video on 🔥 BTS was not big for a long time, they grinded like no other to get where they are today. Alottttt of people (not just south koreans) were making fun of them for coming from a small company and super disrespectful to them for along time Suga(Min Yoongi\Agust D) is from the rap line, he was the one who "lit the hooded figure on🔥" He an RM (Namjoon\leader of BTS) were both underground rappers. They chose to go the idol route. A very big thing in south korean culture is you respect your elders. Even if someone id only 1 yr older, you are to respect them. "hyung" is the term for elder brother. There are interviews of older underground rappers talking mad shit about them, they stayed silent and did not defend themselves. They chose to 🔥 back in their music. Fun fact every member has a "7" tatto vecause the mber genuinely consider themselves family (Spoon was covered by other #ARMY commentors) Butter, dynamite are other great MVs of BTS Thank you for all that you give to us Joeesparks7 #ARMY STRONG💜💜💜

A spoon refers to a golden spoon, someone coming from a privileged position. Even at the beginning of Mic Drop J hope opens rapping "Who said my spoon is dirty? (meaning I came from a shitty background). I don't care. When I grab the mic, I have several gold spoons". In the context of Fire, he is saying cut the crap calling me a low life because I don't have and have not achieved what would make me worthy in your eyes. The song literally tells young people it is ok to lose doing things other than what parents and the establishment expect. The whole song is BTS speaking for the younger generation.

Lol you are all of us when we slipped down the rabbit hole. I need moooooore 😉 This is a great dance practice when you start watching those. You don’t get to see a lot of the choreo that goes with this in the MV. When you started to talk visual, I thought about suggesting some of their award show performances (the Asian award show performances put ours to shame) which are just bonkers. The camera work is abysmal though, so if it makes me want to throw things, I can’t even imagine what you’d think. For MVs, I think you’d be interested in watching On: Kinetic Manifesto for the camera work they did plus it is choreography focused. The regular MV could be interesting too. Save Me was a one shot on a gloomy day and the behind the scenes on that one is really fun to watch. I appreciate how you add your experience to your reactions- very cool. Really enjoyed it!

So this song is an anthem to the youth of S Korea (and the world) saying it's ok to make mistakes and take breaks from the constant pressure. In S Korea especially, the pressure is so intense that they have the highest suicide rate in the 10-19 age range in the world. The "I'll forgive you" from Yoongi/Suga/Agust D at the end is saying the youth are forgiven for their mistakes. To answer your question, who is talking ish about BTS.....everyone. Man, they take so much hate it's insane. The New York Times just put out a podcast (Popcast) a couple days ago which is a straight hit piece, just lots of slander and smears. They are constantly being attacked and have been from the beginning. They started from a tiny, broke label and the guys were nobodies, many from poor and working-class families. So initially it was "how dare you aspire to heights" the whole dirty spoons thing. S Korea is pretty hierarchical. They have only been a democracy since the 80s. BTS also were a hip hop based group and were ostracized by the KPop industry as misfits. Similarly, they were rejected by the underground rap world RM and Suga came from as being "sellouts" for signing with a label as an idol group, even though they were working their asses off and didn't even start getting paid until after a couple years of training and then for two more years after they debuted. Instead, they were keeping the lights on at the company with whatever little gigs they could get, like back up dancers for mall fashion shows. They were also attacked as The Ugly Idol Group, since the majority of the members, chosen on talent, didn't fit the cartoonishly unreal standards for idols in S Korea. They are all objectively gorgeous, but not by S Korean idol standards. That hate was so impactful that they mention looks in multiple songs. They had almost no allies in the industry. They said they didn't even feel like they had been invited to the awards shows they were attending in those early years because of how they were treated. Further, their prodigious talent was recognized immediately at their debut in 2013 by the mafia-esque large labels (The Big Three in S Korea, SM, YG and JYP) as a threat to their own groups. So the wheels of the industry were put in motion trying to crush them. They suffered slanders, sabotage, unfounded accusations of chart cheating and plagiarism, abuse by journalists and tv hosts and venues, death threats, and organized mass online hate campaigns by 8 of the largest fanbases from the big three. All this when they were just kids. Ironically, though they are constantly accused of crap and, now that they can afford lawyers, their lawyers are kept busy defending them in court, they are some of the most honest and upright artists in the industry. They even sent their lawyers to fight for Megan Thee Stallion against her own label when her label tried to block their collab because BTS pays artists for collabs, not labels. Because they were being abused and suppressed in the media, their appearances cancelled or cut, hosts abusing them on shows if they could even get on shows, etc, they took to social media to reach fans, which no other group was doing in S Korea at the time, and it incidentally caused them to reach an international fanbase, which they never expected. This helped them overcome the suppression in S Korea. They blogged and vlogged their whole lives, unfiltered and real, highs and lows, triumphs and fears. They created their own variety show to play games and be silly and let people get to know them. The made TikToks before TikTok existed, calling them Bangtan Bombs. They posted behind the scenes of their video shoots and backstage footage. They livestreamed endlessly and they engaged a lot with fans. They still livestream and chat with fans. I am watching Jungkook livestream on my tablet right this very moment. He just started it while walking back from the gym at night and now is home and chatting and taking song requests to sing karaoke with ARMY, which is something he does frequently. There are 12 million people in this livestream, but he still talks with us like we are his "best friends." So people fell in love with their honest, genuine and sweet personalities and their deep bond together and their insane talent and their love for their fans. When they started to break bigger in the west and the media and industry became aware of them, they were called manufactured, fake, (and ironically, too pretty).......even though they fought their way up from the bottom and had always been writing and producing most of their own music, unlike most of their industry in KPop. They came up without help from the industry in S Korea or the West and are still constantly being sabotaged. They are not just successful outside of the industry, they are also successful despite all the industry's attempts to crush them. Try looking at some videos like BTS Hardships by xCeleste or boracity magazine's why the music industry is terrified of BTS. BTS are the ultimate underdogs. They came up from nothing, against all odds, and are now at the top. They built their tiny company, as essentially their only artists, into now being bigger than the Big Three combined. BTS are now bigger than all of KPop combined. They are the biggest group in the world, period. They have broken so many world records that they are already in the Guiness World Record Hall of Fame, and they have won so many awards that they are well on their way to being the most awarded artists of all time. They just won a Global Icon award at the MAMAs (MNET Asian Music Awards) and they called BTS The Greatest of All Time. A single BTS concert brought more money into S Korea than their Winter Olympics did. S Korea even put them on their stamps this year, a first for a living artist. BTS are living legends. I won't subject you to the mess that is the NYT podcast, but here is an actual journalist doing a sensible breakdown of why it was a mess if you are interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWWUoX2Qpbl5maM

You'll be blown away if you see them do this live I've seen it live. Plus from the live recording at an Award Show were they were already hot and sweatie from the number they did before.

You can also watch the dance practice and live performance at the 2022 Busan Concert (last time all 7 were together before the enlistments started). Make sure it is Run BTS dance not their variety show Run BTS or their song Run. 💜

You definitely must check out the "ON" and "IDOL" video performances. They are known as two of BTS's most iconic videos cinematography and choreography wise.

I absolutely love all the production info you give us! It helps me understand better how much value these scenes have. I of course already have a love for this song. It was one of the first videos I saw with my journey of BTS. Thank u Joe Evfor the time you spend helping us add to our takes on the production side. 💜😉
