FlaminGO to Mexico! This small village is PARADISE! (Celestun, Yucatan Vlog)

Visiting Celestún, Mexico has been one of our favorite excursions since we moved to the Yucatán Peninsula in December, 2020.
We took a bus from Merida and spent two days in Celestun. Day one was spent eating lots of seafood and exploring the cute fishing village of only 6,000 residents. (Although the population rises to about 10,000 when its octopus hunting season). We booked an oceanfront Airbnb and found out that Celestun is one of the most affordable places on the whole Yucatan Peninsula to book oceanfront accommodation. Hotels or Airbnbs. The town itself has a super laidback and chill atmosphere and we didn't find it to be very touristy at all.
Day two was all about seeing some flamingos! Celestun is known for having flocks of thousands of them and they are in season right now. (We went on February 15th-16th and saw thousands!) We booked a boat tour at the Celestun Biosphere Reserve. An amazing 147,500-acre (600 km²) reserve where you could spot more than 400 species of birds. There's other options if you want to go see the flamingos, like hiring a local fisherman and their boats to take you out directly from the beach in downtown Celestun, or booking a private canoe tour. We're going to cover all of the options and details in an upcoming blog post so stay tuned for that. (Link to our website at the bottom of this description!)
The boat tour also included a trip through a fairy-tale like Mangrove Swamp and a beautiful crystal-clear water springs.
If you can't travel to Mexico right now due to covid-19 or other reasons, don't worry! After they leave Celestun around March-April they just head a few hours up the Gulf of Mexico coast to Rio Lagartos, Mexico. Another quiet coastal Mexican town. Which one you should visit depends on what time of year you're visiting! (Rio Lagartos is also known for it's pink salt lakes in Los Colorados.)
Celestun is only 1.5 hours from Merida, but several hours further from hot tourist spots like Tulum and Cancun. However, we loved it so much we think if you're in the area long enough you should definitely take the time to come out! Plus, you'll get to road trip through the whole Yucatan state and even see the state of Campeche, which borders the town of Celestun! Don't forget to stop off in Valladolid at the halfway point! :)

Hey guys, I am enjoying watching your videos. I can't get over how inexpensive things are there. A B & B ocean front room 45 $ is awesome. Looks like the best place for nature lovers , for sure. The mangrove swamp , and all those beautiful flamingos. You-all won't want to leave. A great adventure. The Tuk Tuk ride in the beginning was awesome but then when you went on the boat to the Flamingos ....wow. The Flamingos are just fantastic to see in the wild and so many of them. Thanks for taking us on this journey.

I’ve almost lost a drone so many times, I literally lost my first one twice, never fun sweating those close moments. Ahh man, when you lost your first drone were you able to find it both times or did you just get a new one? It's so nerve racking when something goes wrong during the flight 😬 Yes! The area was really fun to explore and it was very beautiful... We both really love staying in Airbnbs. It's nice to compare the price with local hotels and just choose the best deal! I noticed when we fly over water our drone starts acting weird as well... Yeah, it's a little nerve racking going on tours where you're searching for wild animals. @@laurenandseth All I know is my drone lost control and I couldn’t get it back. Then it tried to land but there was water. But then automatically went to land bit couldn’t because of wire. So scary. I thought it was gone. The wind has also drifted our drone bit not that much issue like those who has the mini.

@@SantosChronicles Oh yeah that sounds scary. Wires and power lines have been a problem for us too. We have a mini as well but the mavic pro feels more secure to fly (or at least to me it does). We haven't used the return to home feature much but I want to test it out because maybe next time we have a malfunction that feature will come in handy!

Wow, we are thinking of going to Mexico. We decide today where we are going after Bonaire. Love the beautiful colorful buildings. We love riding on TUK TUK's. The ride sounds awesome. Thank you! And good question, :| Sometimes it's because it comes down on it's own and if I'm not around anyone I don't pull it back up right away. Also, I usually keep it on my ears even when not close to anyone because it's difficult to take it on and off and keep up with it while filming and exploring, so I just leave it on and then pull it up when close to people. Other times I just forget in the moment while trying to get a good shot after eating or drinking something. :)
