I'm surprised they didn't show the small conversation between the two senior ninja's accurately praising Shikamaru's understanding of his own strength to forfeit, since he understands he hasn't got the chakra left to fight he retreats tactfully for now in order to cut his losses, he won't overestimate the situation. Similar to how an experienced combat leader would on a mission, basically explaining why he's the only one to achieve Chunin status during the exam.

To be completely fair to Shikamaru, Itachi, or Tobirama . . . this is Shikamaru at 14 or 15 roughly. That isn't even remotely fair. If we put them all at the same age, the main reason Tobirama or Itachi would win is primarily to superior power, and secondarily to a higher interest in combat.

The only real reason he would get bitch-slapped is due to power-differential and a lack of interest (if we put them all at 12). It's kind of a miss-match. Shikamari could definitely outthink them in a battlefield scenario, but lacks the power to survive a one-on-one. That's kinda the issue. Unless the guy gets a victory in less than four minutes or something via the Shadow Style which I doubt would happen.

I think its a plot hole for shikamaru, and the nara clan as a whole that undercuts their intelligence. That they created this jutsu that can puppet other people, and they they dont wear armor on any vital points that they could stab. Like, if they have a piece of metal around their neck, they can just win anything by making the opponents stab themselves while being protected themselves. It feels like a critical oversight in character design that undercuts the entire point of the clans signature move in an actual fight

Nope thats not it works. Shikamaru shadow doesnt have to with anything shadow or other form of shadow. Shika shadow affects to his chkra, concentration and range. The farther the target , the weaker is the grip of shdow skill. It is also channeling skill , that means any interuption the skill would break and chkra reserves depends on how many he can control and how strong the control. The parachute clothes decoy is only a distraction and manipulation bcoz Temari will think that the shadow of parachute includes to shadow but its not but to lure him into that hole
