This song doesn't really seem melancholy. It sounds more adventurous and exciting than anything. But who knows how Marisa works. Magicians are complicated.

It does sound melancholic, but it also has cheerful parts here and there. I think it fits Marisa. Who knows what this seemingly cheerful, energetic girl hides behind her bright smile.... Maybe tons of hardship, pressure, failures, stress, etc. She's an ordinary magician after all. If there's any reason why she could come this far, it'd probably be through hard work.

She's apparently extremely hardworking, trying to keep up with a natural genius like Reimu with hard work alone. At the same time she doesn't like showing that serious side of herself. Just looking at how she archived many of the spellcards she has seen for possible future reference in "the Grimoire of Marisa" makes it clear that she puts a lot of effort into her magic studies, despite the whimsical notes in it. Though she IS very talented when it comes to magic, and especially danmaku. I'm fairly sure ZUN stated as much in one of her profiles somewhere, but I can't remember exactly where...

+hoppefrosk zun has stated that a few times yea. Marisa was also disowned from her family for pursuing magic. Also it's stated that Marisa is only able to fight well because of tricks and spell card rules. Otherwise she's very weak. Quite contrary to Reimu... She's had quite a lot of hardships. This theme really just goes through Marisa's past. It's like recollecting the past and remembering all the good and bad times. Either way recollecting the past is almost always melancholic.

@@rsg5314 its was because of Mima's powers, Marisa was Mima's disciple. Marisa broke free from Mima before the Windows era, after that she is indeed weak, but a very resourceful person, winning danmaku games with the most efficient utilization of spell card rules. Gods can easily overwhelm her as she is an ordinary person after all, unlike Reimu who has spiritual powers from the Hakurei god.

I dunno where,but ZUN has stated that unlike Reimu born with Shrine Maiden powers,Marisa is someone who is really,really hardworking and did a lot and sacrifice a lot to be someone whose power can fight against Reimu. She even was disowned by her family to go to Gensokyo to pursue magic and be a magician. These are things behind her smile-the Magician's melancholy.

Yeah, while there's no much info it's been confirmed that Marisa's dad is alive and lives in the human village. Which doesn't negate all the hardships Marisa has probably went though, considering she's just a normal human and her magic is quite strong.

@@cereza065 To expand this, Rinnosuke was mentored by Marisa's dad, and gave Marisa her infmaous mini hakkero. And I forgot how he got the mini hakkero, but the Kirisame family is a merchant family that actually deals with the Estate of Hieda no Ares (Akyuu). I forgot what was said of them, but I recall magical items were a part of it. Marisa avoids the topic of her family when he brings it up. Marisa for all of her bravado is very secretive of what she does to garner her skills and power. And Marisa is definitely a good contrast to Reimu and main character. It was early on in the 98 era that Marisa considered Reimu her idol and favorite thing. (Mima taught our black-white to not be envious or jealous of power, what a good lesson!) Of course, Marisa won't be able to beat the one whose power is to be strong enough to take on all the vicissitudes and tribulations of life. No one can top her (except Mima) when it comes to seals and barriers. Oni, major gods (eg, heavenly gods, or it was just Yorihime simply being a better miko), and mundane/unintended conspiracies are what get Reimu.

I've never played a Touhou game, nor have I listened to this entire album. But this song, this song is SO good man. I randomly fell across it and it's one of my favorite pieces of VGM ever written. I know everyone talks about U.N. Owen was Her?, but this song deserves more credit. Amazing track, even though I don't understand the comments that relate to the actual lore.

Anyway, this song it's actually very melancholic. To me, at least. I remember that the first time I heard it, I was dealing with a bad, bad situation. It helped me a little to cheer me up, day after day. It makes me remind of those sad days, yes, but it also reminds me of how happy it could me make this little gem.

I love this theme and Illusionary Sputnik Night, these are just one of the best uses of UFO's instrumentation, why Marisa cannot get this song as her main one or ZUN use it new game or something? It's just so much jumpy and memorable, yet calm and dreamy!
