Why doesn't the flaps up landing checklist tell you to move the flaps lever to up? Asking because the flaps could extend suddenly on short final and give you a nice surprise :D
@flightdeck2sim3 жыл бұрын
Hi Felix, excellent question! With the Alternate Flap System in ARM the TE Flap Bypass valve is in the Bypass position which means only the alternate system can be used to extend/retract flaps, moving the flap lever will do absolutely nothing except update the bug speeds on the PFD. Additionally in normal operation there is a system called the FSEU (Flaps Slat Electronic Unit) which prevents uncommanded motion of the flaps. FD2S

Great content, as always! In 2008 I was on a US Airways 757 from Philadelphia to Manchester and we had to return to Philly shortly after departure, as the flaps were stuck in their takeoff setting. It was a rainy, windy evening, which added to the drama! We entered a hold for about 30 minutes and then made a fast (albeit smooth) landing on 27L. Emergency vehicles were waiting for us. A couple of hours later we were on a 767 and landed in Manchester just a few hours late, which wasn't bad considering! As far as I recall, the same crew operated the second flight.

Excellent video! One thing to point out one items you missed when your speed fell below the UP speed as discussed and per the QRH, you forgot to set the bank angle selector to 15°
@flightdeck2sim3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bvetube101 There is no requirement to select 15 degress AOB on the bank angle selector, the QRH just instructs you to limit bank angle to 15 degrees below the UP Speed. Quoting our guidance "It is a common error and misunderstanding to select 15 degrees on the AOB selector when advised to limit bank angle in the QRH below a certain speed. This can have serious implications during positioning to final approach and the go around once above the up speed (terrain/spacing etc) due to the increased turn radius" In the event of a go around in this situation I just need to increase my speed by 10kts to allow me to bank at 25 degrees. Hello Captain. Awesome explaination as always sir! You mentioned that the chances of doing this type of NNC are very low since you need to lose all 3 hyd systems. Wouldn't losing all 3 systems impact nearly all other system onboard (gear, speedbrakes, brakes, reversers...)? Hope you reply 😁
@flightdeck2sim3 жыл бұрын
Hi Samuel! Hope you're well! Think you misheard me on that one! I wasn't referring to all x3 Hydraulic Systems! That would be a pretty tough day in the office! The 3 systems I was referring to. 1. HYD SYS B - This is what powers the flaps in normal operation 2. Issue with TE Flaps Alternate Extension (Electric Motor or perhaps you have TE flap Assymetry) 3. Issue with LE Flaps Alternate Extension which uses SBY Hydraulic Power FD2S

Would speed brakes be working if flaps and slats aren't in this situation ?
@seannutley14143 жыл бұрын
I’m not 100 percent sure but there’s 3 or 2 hydraulic systems on the 737. The spoilers or speed breaks could be on the other system so if there’s a failure of one system you could lose flaps but not lose speed breaks. I’m not type rated on the 738 so I’m not 100 percent sure
@flightdeck2sim3 жыл бұрын
Hi Darren, they should be! The flight spoilers are powered by A and B System HYD px so losing one system would still mean half the spoilers are available, you do lose ground spoilers completely if you lose Sys A. FD2S

You probably don't need to worry about the high energy braking and cooldown period because this aircraft is likely to not be dispatched anytime soon, correct?

Absolutely Jason, this aircraft won't be going anywhere for a while but we would still utilise all stopping forces (Reverse/Spoilers/Runway Length) to minimise brake temperature. FD2S

So I gotta ask. In the beginning of the video the way you worded it made it seem as if this was an out of the blue thing that was completely unexpected. Does Zibo offer random failures like that, or was this just some scripted scenario building?

@flightdeck2sim3 жыл бұрын
Is that including both LE and TE flaps? TE and LE on the 737 at least use two different backup systems, the chance of one failing is remote but both is pretty unlikely! If you're mentioning the Southwest one I think they had the LE flaps extended, TE flaps were stuck up. FD2S

@@flightdeck2sim Yes I'm referring the Southwest 737 but thanks so much for the clarity.
@flightdeck2sim3 жыл бұрын
@@Turbo_S_Em_funf Anytime! In the situation with the SW with the TE flaps up they would have completed the "TE Flaps Up Landing" Checklist which assumed the LE flaps have extended (You can just about see it in the video!) With the LE flaps extended the final approach speed is VREF40+40 ,15kts slower than an "All Flaps Up Landing" so still pretty fast! FD2S

Very good point and something that would need to be considered at higher landing weights, hence the need to burn off fuel if too heavy. The maximum tyre speed for us is 225mph which is around 195kts FD2S

Guys, did you really experience an all flaps up landing in real life?? On a 737-400 in an average weight, your body attitude is a bit higher than 10 degrees up. It means that if you flare the plane at the landing you’ll most likely have a tail strike… The speed is so high that the ground effect results in a soft landing without flare. I’m talking about an own experience!
