In a lot of ways, the terrible Fever Dream that is the New 52 excluded, Jay is the antithesis of the old addage that if you live long enough you become the villain. I absolutely adore the later JSA stories (beginning with the revival of All Star Comics in the 1970s, and in my opinion peaking with the 1992-93 JSA series) where an older Jay is STILL a good man trying to accomplish good. Helping others to the best of his ability is built into his speedily vibrating molecular structure.
@JaelinBezel6 жыл бұрын
You know, you'd think that when you first come up with a superhero, you'd want to make the way he got his powers something extremely unlikely or just something that couldn't easily be replicated on any number of people. Like, oh I don't know, in the 2014 Flash tv series for instance. That scientist being able to predict what the Heavy Water has done to Jay even before he begins to exhibit any super speed at all just makes me wonder why they haven't already done this to other volunteers multiple times over.
@RabblesTheBinx2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's why they started adding the lightning to the equation with the introduction of Barry Allen. Getting struck by lightning _while_ you're working with a bunch of chemicals does tend to reduce the chances of it happening to multiple people.

My favorite "better One More Day story" is What If Doctor Doom were a Hero? Where he has to choose between saving his country and his wife, or saving his country and himself, knowing that without him, Latveria would fall into the hands of tyrants again, so every year he locks himself in the dungeon for one night and fights Mephisto's demon hoarde in an attempt to save her. My biggest issue with the reboot is that they have no idea what was rebooting and what was just carrying on from the old continuity. Why did they write Superman in Action Comics as if HE was starting from scratch, but Batman in ALL of his books was being written as if nothing changed? And where the Hell did Stargirl come from is there was no Starman in this universe from whom she could be inspired?
@L17017 жыл бұрын
Bobsheaux Batman and GL continued in because Johns and Morrison's work on them were popular, and DC didn't want to risk losing the fans and money those tuns were making. Also, Stargirl was inspired by Geoff Johns' dead sister, and he had editorial power at the time. He sure wasn't going to let her be sent to Earth-2 with the rest of the JSA.

I'm not really in any rush to see a villains origins month myself. I still kinda wanna see more of the heroes and where they got started. I mean, you've covered a lot so far, but we still got Namor and Aquaman, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Black Widow, Supergirl, Batgirl, Stargirl (Was she from the Silver Age?), War Machine, Falcon, Iron Fist and Power Man, like there's still a ton to do and I'm probably missing a bunch. The point is, while I'd like to see you cover say The Black Cat or Joker or one of the Flash Rogues, I really don't need it that much. I already know quite a bit about some of their first appearances and to be honest they're not that interesting. Maybe it's because in the Golden Age they were just evil of petty or psychotic reasons and in the Silver Age they could never have justified or sympathetic reasons for being criminals. They were just bad because they were bad. The Comics Code made telling compelling stories about bad guys effectively pointless. There was nothing to tell. They were there to be beaten up by the hero. You couldn't delve in Lex Luthor's obsession to prove he better than Superman because he's actually human and that his ego must inevitably win out over those who didn't have to work to where he got to be. Mostly because Luthor is just another crazy mad scientist. You can't really talk about Joker's madness being present within all of us, and that we are potentially capable of great evil. Mostly because the Joker is just a guy with a clown gimmick and fear of clowns wasn't really a thing in the 60s. So really, any origins episodes on say "Black Cat" would just be: "She goes around trying to kill Spider-Man, and fails. There's no real hint of a potential femme fatale relationship because they hadn't really thought of it yet." Boring. Speaking of, I'm still wondering about your thoughts on the new direction of Black Cat's character is. I know you don't read the Spider book, so you probably know little about it, but given what you heard I'm wondering if you think it's as dumb as everyone else.

I have been a HUGE fan of DC's golden age heroes since my introduction to them when I was 10. I started out in comics by READING golden age comics, and I'm one of the rare fans who does that given my young age and the fact I was born in 2000.(Not too many 15 year olds are reading comics and pulp magazines that have been around before their grandparents were born. :) Anyway, you hit it right on the head. In DC trying to gain new readers they gave a big middle finger to the older ones by dismissing their sense of legacy. Grandparents, parents, and kids alike could all connect to the same characters in one extended, continuing and ongoing universe. Now, DC is ABANDONING that in favor of attracting more casual viewers, because, y'know, pissing off all your longtime fans in favor of gaining a smaller pool of younger fans (who have only care about the movies anyway) is SUCH a smart, profitable strategy. :) Anyway, awesome review. You've earned yourself a subscriber. :)

I always found the a fun little golden age origin, no complaints here. Taking time to talk ruminations, I'm with Lewis on this one and was actually happy he brought it up in the Green Lantern 23.1 (though I understand why he cut it out.) Honestly while I like villains as much as the next guy, with a few exceptions I really don't care where they first show up. Heck I'd rather see Scott Lang, Captain Marvel Jr., The Vision, Jonah Hex, Aquaman just to name a few, long before any villains origins.

Plus its tough to do villians as most dont get a true origin story....I mean maybe we see them get their powers but for the best ones like Doom or Magneto their origin is really over many issues slowly filled in since the hero is the focus

Ah so Secret Origins Mouth is for the golden and silver age appearances of the heroes? Ok I see.

Man, the original Flash's origin is a bit disappointing. I know Golden Age stories are not the same as modern age ones and they'd feel less need to make it plausible (hard water, etc.) but a guy who was supposedly smart got powers by being monumentally stupid. I bet Jay never tells any of the JSA or JLA how he got his powers, it's too embarrassing! And Joan is so shallow it's hard to root for her and Jay's relationship. The other origins from the same era stand up to the test of time: the last son of Krypton, the boy who lost his parents in a senseless act of violence, the princess who lived a sheltered life until the outside world came to her, so she proved her worthiness to go to the outside world, and found it in need of saving. Meanwhile, I never knew Jay's origin until this video. Even as he gets more love in non-comic media, it's never been deemed worthy of repeating.

will you ever do booster gold on this show
@dnmstarsi8 жыл бұрын
+Kevin McGinty Probably in a Secret Origins Month. There's just others he wants to cover first.
@mickginny60758 жыл бұрын
That makes sense
@DanielDAdkins8 жыл бұрын
Kevin McGinty Probably not. Booster Gold was created in the 1980s. Secret Origins Month only looks at Golden and Silver Age comics.

He means "Will Linkara do an episode on Booster Gold. Period." He didn't say it had to be Secret Origins Month.

Hard water and heavy water…Aren't those two different things? Hard water is water with a high mineral content. Chicago gets it's water from Lake Michigan which is hard water.
@dprototype64317 жыл бұрын
Zinervawyrm I think they meant heavy water, but yeah, they're too different things.

so did you stick with earth 2? I dropped it at issue 30 and I'm not reading society. I got soooo sick of the war with Apokolypse.
@gideon53868 жыл бұрын
Eamonn Deane I read the first issue but the art is... not my cup of tea. Plus it had the same problem that the later issues of earth 2 had, the fact that instead of focusing on the JSA characters it is about yet another person taking up the batman mantle.
@gideon53868 жыл бұрын
Eamonn Deane honestly rebirth can't get here soon enough. I wish they would tell us what the plan is with earth 2 though cuz it's sticking around but they didn't announce a creative team yet.

Eamonn Deane no, I heard good things though. I was too busy being disappointed by the superman books, Martian manhunter, and doctor fate.
