To be honest, German is the easiest language for anyone not least a Japanese to pronounce with reasonable precision except Umlaut and trill, thanks largely to the nearly total absence of spelling-pronunciation irregularities. which is another aspect of precision-orientated German culture excluding deviations from rules. You just follow spelling and you make no mispronunciation. In the mean time, however, I must admit that German grammar is a sheer nightmare.

As a Japanese American who has spent time in Japan, it wasn’t surprising to see the embrace of a classic. Japanese embrace music of all styles, but classical music is still deeply embedded in their culture. The young people playing in the orchestra reflect that foundational embrace of the classics. But what was just as amazing was the voices across generations singing the praise of this classic. The voices together was truly inspirational. Wish I could have been there. Hard to beat this performance on any level.
@mookiestewart3776 Жыл бұрын

Beethoven made it while he was completely deaf, the EU made it their anthem, churches took the tune and made it a hymn, and the world remembers it as the most iconic piece of classical music ever created. Should the world unite to one cause for peace, this should be the anthem. And while I know that will never happen, the fact that we are still listening and enjoying this music when it is almost 200 years old just shows how much it is really worth. This is one thing no one will ever take from us. Not even death could stop the beauty of this music.

I love this piece of music not becouse its European Union anthem, but becouse it is music which invigorates in our hearts our dream about united Europe, a dream which maybe lost forever and soon. Maybe the Union will become centralized totalitarian technocratic regime or maybe the Union will be gone - destroyed by egotistic maniacs and we become again a bunch of little quarrellsome particles. But this sheer greatnes of a music will be forever a memento of a beautiful vision, and Beethoven forever will be a conjurer of this vision - of truely united European nations - united in peace, united in strife for truth and united in joy of future discoveries.

This was a huge surprise starting slowly and amazing by the time everyone in the orchestra had joined. Then you got another surprise when the full choir joined It gave me goosebumps and shivers all over. It made me very emotional and tears were streaming down my face. It really touched me It must have sounded amazing in that space ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC ! !

To paraphrase the title, "Ode to Joy", let me say, "Ooh, what Joy!" An accomplished performance by players and choristers who so visibly enjoyed themselves. But don't forget the soloists who were exceptional too! A rare treat, a gem of musical expertise, especially when the Chorus pitched in. Well done to all.

This is absolutely amazing thrilling touching moving magnificent I am not at all concerned about who or why or how I was only blessed to hear these wonderful musicians and singers from all walks of life I'm sure to pour out their praise and allow other humans 2 enjoy this. As an American citizen, brought up in the southern Baptist Church and singing in choirs all my life there is nothing so stirring as joining your voice with another human and experiencing the joy that it gives you. I just want to say thank you thank you thank you.

OH MY GOD! I would have loved to experience the moment when everybody started to sing. I got chills listening to it on my phone. It would have been transcending in person.
@BTinSF3 жыл бұрын
I don't think "everybody" was singing. I assume those singing were choristers planted in the hall because I'm a lifelong classical music fan and I couldn't sing all the words in German. I doubt anything like that many "regular" Japanese could unless they were trained to do so.
@mmmoroi3 жыл бұрын
@@BTinSF "those singing were choristers planted in the hall" is exactly what a flash mob is about, is it not? While Beethoven's No.9 is extremely popular, few Japanese can sing it in German. Those singing in German from 6:23 to 7:49 are the members of the Musashino Chorus who are familiar with the German lyrics, whereas those joining the chorus (a dozen or two individuals) from 8:11 are the laymen=members of the public who happen to know the lyrics in Japanese only. Note that members of the Musashino Chorus changed language at this point apparently to encourage passers-by to participate in the choir; simply because this climax is the part of the symphony best known to anyone in the country. Personally I believe at least the first part of the lyrics by Schiller is worth memorising since the time I was deeply impressed by the performance of an actress reciting this in one scene of the film "Clockwork Orange (1971)" by Stanley Kubrick. Freude, schöner Götterfunken Tochter aus Elysium Wir betreten feuertrunken Himmlische, Dein Heiligtum Deine Zauber binden wieder Was die Mode streng geteilt Alle Menschen werden Brüder Wo Dein sanfter Flügel weilt I believe you have far more extensive knowledge about classical music than I have, and I hope you join me praising its unparalleled beauty in both poetic and phonetic terms, which is sadly missing from this splendid performance in the footage.

One of the nicest, most joyful versions of this composition that I've ever heard. Wonderful!! Simply wonderful!! 👏👏👏
My high school Music Appreciation teacher, Mr. McCormick, wrote lyrics to the final movement of this symphony in 1963. I remember all the words to this day. "Gather round and join the chorus, sing the brotherhood of man. Confirm the truth that all are equal children of the almighty one. We will understand each other when all nations join as one. Brothers all in human nature, love alone can make us one." Although not a direct translation from German, it captures the spirit of Beethoven's original lyrics.

Finally a "surprise" performance of Beethoven's 9th that, apart for a few literal repeats supposedly to accomodate performers joining in from across the mall, actually follows the original Beethoven score to the last details. Most Ode An Die Freude-flashmobs use a simplified, reduced, specially-made-for-the-event arrangement. So I wanna hand out a big compliment to all who learned to play or sing their parts by heart.

@@aokimika9249Please, i beg you, do not let dark feelings grasp at your heart; fight them to flee with the mighty acts of smiling to strangers on the street, the pouring out of the best and most potent words of encouragement and thankfulness you can conjure from out of nowhere to those you meet who are working with sullen looks on their faces and dirt on their hands, giving gifts of nourishment to others. Persist with kindness in breaking down the unneeded barriers holding apart our hearts, that they may come to touch and spread the strength of unrequited love amongst us - I too found myself once coming under the brief spell of a sadness that felt unlike any i could disperse in solitude; I chose to reject it at first by just giving sandwiches to homeless people even though i had barely the money to feed myself, and it didn't take long before the smiles they paid in return brought me back from the edge of the abyss to where i am now, a glowing beacon of willful and playful joy those around me mill and swarm about for closeness, warmth, comfort, and the healing of aching hearts. You too have the same power if not more, i believe you can find it and bring it to bear, showing the entirety of the universe your kindling flame and doubtlessly it will grow like the strongest of seeds evermore - even as i write this meagre gift of words just for you, knowing nothing of your person or the struggle that is your life, i weep in earnest, not from sadness but because my heart throbs, for it is now a vessel in which hope can live and exude from; hope that you too will persevere and flourish. You have my faith, need you any more, then just tell a little of what ails you the most; i can no longer judge others as that act was part of what drove me towards the cold darkness, and rest awaits only when i become dust and memories, until then you may take from me any strength you need, i give it freely and with no desire for recompense!

You may have tried to hide away yourself from others, tried to pass judgement, expected every fellow human to already be working in unison towards the harmonious existence music can show us is promised when all hearts are openly exposed and beating together; Dwell further on what hinders your own self from being a person you can love, and make that hindrance vane and blemish no longer your sight of humanity with expectations of immediate betterment, but instead throw off those shackles of wanting and give of yourself to others - it may well be that many thousands of generations must yet pass before we are fully at peace, but as long as just one of us has the courage and will to roar at death and sadness, that path is the path we are all on, and believe me there are many with hearts of lions even if news and social media are all abuzz with emphasis on troubling trials all over the world. We need only pay heed to not falter ourselves, and to right our own course towards brighter times when we do, and we will succeed beyond measure, in due time :)
