Flash vs continuous lighting for photography | let's discuss the best option

You can either use a flash (strobe) for your photography of a continuous light. But which one is best and why? How do they both work and who should use a continuous light and who should use a flash.

I think if you’re on location (restaurant/ bar ) and there are customers there at the same time a continuous light is better. You wouldn’t want a flash going off when people are eating dinner or having a drink. It always depends on the environment and the subject.

Thanks! I can see why that’d be. Per my experience I only do pro shoots in restaurants when people know about it and that includes the clients. I shoot and I leave (that’s photography of course). But I can see how that could be a problem in some cases. Thanks a lot for sharing that!

Another point is what happens to the model's eyes when you're using constant vs flash. Having a constant bright light in the eyes causes the pupils to shrink, which may not be flattering in headshots, or simply not the look you're going for. Sure it give you more iris, but it also make your model look like they're on drugs or something 😅. Softer ambient light and flash is going to give you more natural looking eyes.

is ad200 pro or ad300 pro better/stronger than 600watts continuous light for food photo?

Hello, well let’s just say that I shoot food usually at around 1/64th of the power of the AD400 pro. So you could shoot an AD300 pro at 1/32 and AD 200pro at 1/16 or even an AD100pro at 1/8th 😏 so no need for a 600w continuous light! (Also less light on all the time - more enjoyable). That said, you could totally use a continuous light if you don’t want to or can’t get a flash. Hope that helps

Thanks mate - appreciated. The 200 pro should be enough yes. Now that said, why would you shoot at base ISO and 1/250 of a second? I would shoot at 1/125 (unless you really need that to kill ambient light) so you can gain a little bit of light and reduce the flash power. Even 200 ISO should be fine (and right there that’s 2 stops of light that you reduce from your flash 😌) my couple cents 😉
