Original 1961 JFK Affirmative Action: "Take action to ensure applicants are hired WITHOUT regard to race, creed, color,.." Leftist Affirmative Action: "Take action to ensure applicants are hired WITH regard to race, creed, color,..."

No comment on JFK, but though it may seem “reverse-racist” to want colleges to consider race and ethnicity, I’d like to explain my thought process and why affirmative action is both not racist and would benefit society. The two subjects of this case are college admissions teams and race, more particularly in this case, racism. Of racism, we’ll separate it into two types; systemic racism (where you grew up, parental situation, income etc…) is quantifiable and can and should be applied to all races. These are what a lot of conservatives propose as an ALTERNATIVE to affirmative action (though I think it should be in addition to it); Mental burden of racism, however, isn’t quantifiable. Reasonable people acknowledge the existence of racial tension, but it DOES have different levels and extremities depending on where someone lives, what media they watch, who they interact with etc… Unfortunately this “mental burden” that effects childrens lives so differently is extremely hard to quantify, leaving the goal of accepting disadvantaged students un achieved and sometimes hurting equally deserving potential students. In my opinion (and I think many agree) is that affirmative action needs to be fixed, but it shouldn’t be done away with, and the idea is not implicitly racist. Furthermore the benefits of accepting a diverse group of students for better discussion via diversity of thought is also a benefit to these policies, although I think that should run along ethnic lines rather than skin color.

@@chaoticgoat1355state sanctioned racial discrimination is unacceptable. Also the idea that ethnic diversity in and of itself is good is laughable. It stereotypes, reduces individuals to their ethnicity, and draws distinct lines between people - the exact opposite of what we have been promoting since the civil rights movement. Additionally, the idea that the dozens upon dozens of mono racial nations across the world are inferior and lacking in their endeavors and institutions is amusing.

Although I strongly agree, it's not that simple. We first had to address social bias. For example, prior to forced racial inclusion, it was believed that black people were inferior athletes. Hitler's Olympics served to correct that assumption. However, instead of being proud of the black athletes who brought the US to victory, the athletes were met with distain. The US president refused to congratulate them, out of fear of losing southern voters. The star athlete, Jessie Owens was barred from participating in subsequent athletic events. It took a lot of effort to get where we are today.

A lady told me that it was about time that we judge people on merit, as opposed to giving special treatment to minorities through Affirmative Action.Although I agree on a certain level, I don't think that she realised that white women, by number, were the greatest beneficiaries of the policy.

Actor Morgan Freeman said if you want to stop racism, stop talking about it... Now you will always have people who carry hate in their hearts no matter the skin color, hate has to live in the heart to carry out a hateful act. Most people do not carry hate, but you will always have those few that do. Stop trying to paint America as a racist country, we are not. Most Americans show love and compassion for those who are suffering, but you will always have your selfish hate filled people throughout the world not just in the USA..

There are several types of humans that have nothing to do with race or gender, but I will limit them to three. The first type are humans born with genetics that will lead to a logical thinking adult blessed with common sense reasoning. The second are the humans not blessed with this transition and of whom are left with emotions guiding them through life, which leaves them open to suggestion or to propaganda designed to program them into believing in a certain way. The third are people with sociopathic tendencies, that are incapable of feeling remorse. They are the ones that corrupt society and the reason our political system is corrupt as it is.

How so? I’m a double minority, Hispanic, and Native American. I find AA to be the biggest crock of BS, all it does is discriminate against people who would otherwise be selected or admitted based on meritocracy. AA also pushes unqualified people into positions they don’t belong in because they under perform, or in the case of college, they cannot get a job in their field, as in the case with a JD degree. Thomas Sowell has pointed out, as have other people, that minorities who get into law school based on anything other than merit, cannot pass the bar and all they end up with is mammoth debt that they struggle to pay off the rest of their lives. That’s the underbelly to AA that no one talks about. And, bonus observation, really smart minorities who would get in based solely on meritocracy, are looked at skeptically as though it’s possible they were picked to fill a quota or “goal” and one wonders as to their capabilities.
