Matrix had a backstory against all odds like the first Star Wars did. Matrix had a production budget of $63million which is small as warner bros was the sole financier as other film companys and investors had trouble understanding the story(even will smith 🙄). So they filmed here in oz to keep the budget down. stuntmen suffered several injuries one nearly died. Reeves needed neck surgery. Weaving hip surgery. They had to shoot the film like a deck of cards. The special effects like mirror scene when neo took the blue pill took 4-6months to mak e and render as cpus were not fast enough back then. The bullet time sequence they werent even sure if it was gonna work. LOL they pulled it off became a classic film 🔥

Too many people have probably made conversation about Keanu Reeves' supposedly mediocre acting abilities, but either he was born to play Neo or he was acting here beyond the range people usually prescribe to him -- the mannerisms when he is surprised at the intrusion in his workstation or during his conversation with Trinity later in the club -- I find his portrayal of Neo totally believable. I am not really preoccupied with Keanu Reeves the actor or Matrix as a franchise or phenomenon -- in fact I just came here for an allegory and stayed again for his character.

When I was young I always felt like everything about neo's life in this scene was odd. He's surrounded by junk in a dark room, the people who approach him are icky, the club partying and all that seems like people are chasing a high instead of having fun, it all seems so dark. As an adult, I see that this is existence for a lot of people. Surrounded by fakeness, superficiality, working to chase fleeting happiness, and all contained within a brutal, oppressive system. It's sad how modern life hasn't changed at all. If anything, the system is even more pervasive than before

Now I understand that it is because they have to mentally prepare the people they free and be hyper careful doing so. It's a process of slowly luring them into the rabbit hole, their mind has to be conditioned for the mindfuck that's about to happen. Maybe also as a filter to make sure they really want to know the truth and are ready to accept it, test after test up until the ultimate decision with the pills.

There's something about Neo's apartment that's hard to explain. On one level it's obviously a dump, the equivalent of an efficiency with electricity and maybe running water and a bathroom (they never show the whole apartment), but on another level it's compelling, somehow like another world that you could be immersed in if you had his lifestyle. All Neo cared about was hacking and finding more about the Matrix, so what more would he need?

Yeah. Looks like a studio flat, everything is in one room, at 1:41 you can see a microwave next to the desk then out of the frame I guess it's the kitchen. And the bed is actually right across the room. It's even smaller than it seems. It also has one window like a window on a parcel box or an envelope. Overall a bit isolated and depressing. There are a lot of single-bed apartments like that in real life big cities. Not ideal at all. EDIT: you see that room again in Ressurections' opening!

Simulacra and Simulation is one of the perfect props in this movie if not best. Looks like a legit book but it's a box. That's exactly the 4 phases the original book talks about: 4 phases of reality; staying loyal to the appearance and being a legit book, and the complete imitation/simulation of real object but neither original nor serves the original purpose anymore. Club scene took place in an actual Industrial/Goth club in Sydney called HellRazor - I know this because I used to frequent the place; in fact a lot of the people you see in the first panning shot are regulars. The pillar that Keanu is next to had his signed initials put on them. Hellrazor was a three floor club and believe it or not, you actually could have whispered conversations with someone in certain areas of it. The club was opened for a good couple of years until a drug deal went bad in the basement and someone got shot. End of a very decent Industrial club.

The one to save the unaware and expose the light within the darkness, anyone who finds truth could be the one tbh (Neo = One) Hollywood / Occultics & Esoterics know this information and puts it in plain sight in media so you see it as fiction, that's y they mold certain fictional characters into a christ story Ex; Ironman, Desmond miles, Neo, etc

When I was in middle school I was absolutely obsessed with the Matrix. My friends and I used to talk about it all the time. Our English teacher gave us an assignment where we could pick 1 of 5 movies that everyone had seen and we could write/make up our own plot synopsis/short story for it's sequel. I chose the Matrix. Long story short, I wrote a 187 page story/plot synopsis for it's sequel. I'm not going to get into very many details except for to say my Matrix sequel ended with Neo asleep in front of his computer. As he looks around confused he turns back to his computer screen where the words "Wake up Neo" appear. He gives a half effort smile. The kind of smile you give when you're confused and can hardly believe what's going on. He looks back at his computer screen where the words, "The Matrix has you" appear...........Credits.......... My teacher absolutely positively loved my draft of the Matrix sequel. I simply called it "The Matrix 2". Yep, such a creative title. Anyways, she had me type it up and print it and she entered it into a short story contest where I won. It was awesome. Everyone liked my story. My writing went downhill from there....... It's so easy to write about things you love because you care and want it to be good. All the other assignments I got in school and college were boring assignments. So I just made sure I met the word count requirements and the format requirements.

It's 2020. This movie is 20 years old. Back then in was cooler than anything you'd seen before. A new kind of cool: Classy, neat, coherent, logical, philosophical. Not shabby, or vulgar, or chaotic, or crazy. The "real", authentic type of cool, not the pretentious one. The script, the action, the dialogues, the camera, the CGI, the costumes, the actors: All top-notch. The story sucks you in right from the start & doesn't let you go till the end. Even now, 20 years later, it's still cooler than most movies that came after it. If it got released now in 2020, in its original form, it'd still be a huge succes.

the body language shift at 4:00 is what makes this movie good. this is the moment his curiousity overwhelms his instincual self-preservation - from the subtle "Morpheus" at Heathrow Airport tag that showed up on his screen, to the Simulacra and Simulation books (the actors were forced to read prior to filming) that he holds his illegal disks in, to the more obvious white rabbit tattoo, he's being primed all along to receive the reality of the matrix. I think to tell folks the truth outright would either make them dismiss it as lunacy or cause them to go crazy themselves, this slow burn method has to be the only way that works. Morpheus is a therapist/pyschonaut in a way.

I'm not saying it's the single greatest film ever made: you could say it's humourless, you could say it's pompous, it's pretentious and it's kinda ridiculous if you don't buy into the premise. ...But in terms of action movies, movies that are there to excite and to give you feelings of catharsis and intense empowerment, and give you that sugar rush of watching really, really fucking cool stuff happen to really, really fucking cool characters...there is NOTHING that comes close to the original Matrix. It is something like a miracle; the perfect action movie. It does absolutely every single thing it set out to do, and it does it all flawlessly. Everything came together.

I remember that feeling well after having seen this film for the first time. It was all that the kids at my school talked about for months. Every guy at the mall frantically searched the sunglasses kiosk for a pair of Neo-inspired shades. The Matrix definitely had a huge impact on pop culture. And the fact that the film came out just before the new millennium gave everyone that anxious feeling of what to expect...that maybe computers and machines are on the verge of fully taking over our way of life and how the Matrix is a fantasy foreshadowing of events to come in the year 2000. It's easily one of the best sci-fi/action films to date. Also guy in the comments is an asshole.

@@scorpionwins6378 Yup, agree with all that. Brilliant film, it just blew my mind. Nothing has really come close since. And yeah, there's always at least one douche in every comment section. My attitude is that I'm generally polite to people, unless they're impolite to me. ...Then I tell myself the gloves are off and I can counter-troll them as much as I want.

Thank you Sophia Stewart. The original writer of both the matrix and the terminator. Look her up.

@Tiredofdumbfuks Me too. I watched all of those. The only one that came within a million miles was Equilibrium...which was basically a rip-off. That had some cool moments. But still not in the same universe as The Matrix.

Have you ever noticed that since Matrix there never have been made movies like this. Matrix doesn’t want you to think.

Why would someone try and redo a concept that was already done not that long ago and was a smash hit? Sounds like a way to get your movie panned for being an unoriginal rip off and lose a bunch of money at the box office.

He doesn't say "I'll come". When Neo says "Sure I'll go" he is not talking to the weirdos that have knocked at his door. He is talking to the one that was writing at his computer. That means he sense that there is someone listening.
