Lots of people talk about the action and groundbreaking visual effects, but if you ask me, what really made this movie so special was the storyline, the mysteriousness, the incredibly well defined characters, the dialogue that's pure perfection, the acting, the steady, deliberate incredibly artfull cinematography, (no b.s. shaky cam nonsense and every frame is an art piece that communicates a story) the music (which is near perfection) and overall atmosphere and vibe. The action and visual effects were simply the icing on an already outstanding masterpiece.

@fighder2 Thank you for your interesting comment. I agree that Morpheus does not know the whole story. And I am glad that you brought this up. Just remember that God's truth is infinite. So nobody (except God) knows the whole story about anything. At first glance, it appears to me that Morpheus fell short of doing an adequate job of preparing Neo by telling Neo the things that Neo needed to know in order to make an informed decision about whether to exit the Matrix (I.E. the dream world) or take the blue pill. Morpheus later apologized to Neo in the movie. When he apologized, Morpheus told Neo that he did what he did because he had to (do it). After I thought this over, it occurred to me that Morpheus did not have all day long to prepare Neo. The duration of the interview between Morpheus and Neo was limited because Neo was still connected to the Matrix and the agents can eventually discover the hack in the Matrix if they are allowed enough time to do so. In the end, Morpheus had to do what he did because Neo is the one. If Neo takes the blue pill and goes home, then humanity cannot be saved. At least, not during this particular iteration of the Matrix.
@rsolsjo2 жыл бұрын
It also makes you question free will. The entire first movie says "we do have free will, we aren't just slaves to our programming (destiny)". The second one says "but maybe not..". Neo does eventually CHOOSE Trinity, and that leads all the way to peace, but before that.. Morpheus was just another cog in a system. He thinks he's telling Neo the truth and doing it by his own choosing, he isn't, he never was. As The Merovingian says, "choice is an illusion created between those with power and those without". You can take it pretty far.

The dichotomy between this scene and Neo’s earlier interrogation by Smith is awesome. Smith, as an Agent of the Matrix, saying ‘you pay your taxes’ with almost respect in his voice, because it’s a standard act within the laws of the Matrix that maintains the illusion and keeps humanity in line. Morpheus saying ‘when you pay your taxes’ with almost derision in his voice, because he knows it just helps maintain the status quo that the Matrix needs to keep functioning; as the Architect later explained, the ‘ideallic’ Matrix they created first was rejected by humanity, and only in one where humans have to do something as mundane as paying taxes do they blindly accept it as reality.

What if they’d met multiple times before, but Neo was taking the Blue pill and going back to his life, and then Morpheus starts slowly feeding him information, making him more curious about The Matrix. So I've been on a Matrix binge lately. What I first assumed was clunky pacing is actually high level filmmaking. The mystery surrounding Morpheus and his team all but disappears in a matter of 15 minutes, between the time Neo takes the pill and defeats Morpheus in the Kung-Fu simulation. As a younger viewer, I wished the movie revealed more, later in the film, and get Morpheus and Trinity more mysterious until later in the film, but now I realize it's just right. The red pilled humans were desperate, and gave Neo exactly what he needed so that his mind wouldn't reject the truth. I wish the rest of the series kept this kind of intentional pacing.

This movie hasn't aged, if anything it's gotten better and more relevant as time's gone on. I watched it in the cinema with a friend of mine who insisted we go watch it. I couldn’t thank him enough. My mind as the end credits rolled was full of delight, questions and anticipation for a sequel. The Matrix could have turned out terrible had they cast the wrong (bums on seats) actors. This film had a huge cultural impact and has become a cinematic masterpiece. The cast, setting, lighting, and sound all create a powerful ensemble. I'm going to learn Morpheus' monologue from this scene for my next acting class. Thanks for sharing!

3:30 Neo is like "Uh, so this guy I've been searching for for years is just a drug dealer and user? That's his big secret? I guess all the philosophical talk about the mind being enslaved starts to make sense now... Must be some powerful stuff, I guess I'll try it"

It's kinda funny thinking about it. It's like Neo was being tempted into a cult or about to have his organs stolen if the rest of the movie didn't happen.

Yeah, I think the Matrix is a parable for society and culture. It's a force which is internal to our minds, which governs our behavior without any kind of external physical coercion, like an internal prison, since the majority of what governs our behavior is culture, rather than law. We're just brought up to believe that we must stay within the confines of what our culture dictates, and since it's all been reinforced to us so repeatedly, going against it produces a sensation of anxiety, not unlike a little voice that says, "Ooh, you shouldn't do that," even if the decision to either do or not do a particular thing should be completely trivial. Even if and when we suspect that it's all trivial, for some reason, the majority of us would stay within our internal confines anyway, even if we might genuinely like to break the ever-so-precious rules a little bit. For instance, maybe you'd like to go to a restaurant and order dessert first, or maybe you'd like to go for a walk during a rainstorm and deliberately get soaking wet, or maybe you're a man who would rather wear women's underpants than men's, just because you find them so much more comfortable. They're just random examples, but if you feel like doing such things, the only rules that say you mustn't are completely inside of your own head.

The great thing about Morpheus for a first time watcher is he almost comes across like some kind of a cult leader. I didn't really know anything about what The Matrix was until I saw it in the theater. I didn't see the trailer. I just heard it was apparently a great movie. It certainly is, but from that virgin perspective, Morpheus has some ambiguity to him that makes him almost untrustworthy from the beginning.

I think it's understated that the Matrix brought virtual avatars in to mainstream culture. Neo has no idea if this is what the "real" Morpheus even looks like - but it doesn't matter, because the meeting of their virtual avatars is essentially used to represent their potential "first" meeting in the real world. So cool.

You aren't kidding. I have zero doubt that I am literally in a different "world" than I was born into. I don't mean that the world changed. I had some type of profound spiritual fall. From a combination of possible things... spiritual pride, inability to forgive, having made the wrong kinds of bonds and unknowingly allowing myself to be taken advantage of energetically by dark people or spirit entities. I would never have been in a "world" where Covid existed if not for the mistakes that I made and the resulting fall. We are multi-dimensional beings.

I think the only person who was miscast in The Matrix Trilogy was Carrie-Anne Moss. She's a good fighter but martial arts talent is not the same as acting talent. It's unfortunate that Rosa Salazar was too young for The Matrix 23 years ago. She proved in Alita: Battle Angel that she has both the martial arts ability AND the acting ability needed to pull off Trinity. She's a hell of a lot more expressive than Moss and if she was the one saying "God damn you, Cypher" whilst watching her friends get killed, she wouldn't have phoned it in like Moss did. Even though Rosa was a kid in 1999 though, surely they could have found a better actress for Trinity than a woman who has the same expression and delivery for 90% of all 3 Matrix movies. Keanu Reeves can be a bit bland at times too but at the same time, I wouldn't recast Neo. This might be partially because Keanu is a wonderful human being in real life so even if he's somewhat bland, he brings a genuine innocence, kindness and humility to the role. He's not one of those larger than life actors but I think that's kind of the point. Neo is the One but he doesn't see himself as being above ordinary people.
