Really enjoying this series. I have always wanted to know more about Spain and the history behind the bunch that came and conquered. I am from Mexico and was brought to the US when I was 6 years old. Now that I have the time I have found your videos so engaging and you just make history come alive. I watched your Punic war videos and enjoyed those also. Before I found your videos I had just seen some videos on the US Civil war and the 600,000 human carnage it had caused, I was taken aback when I thought of those numbers. I like your references to WW II, the US Civil War(Sherman, Lee ,Grant and Lincoln), the US Revolutionary war , and others. You sure know your history. I am making it a point o watch ALL of your videos out there. You are enriching my life. Peace brother and lets strive for a little 'Convivencia' in THESE times.

Thank you for sharing this about yourself. I think history is just the most amazing subject. I’m also a big fan of the American Civil War and I find it Incredible that 600,000 people - about 2% of the population - died in that war. I like to include references from other time periods to make the history that I’m talking about more accessible to people like you who are more familiar with those other times. I think you are spot on and what you say, If history teaches us anything we all need to learn to be more tolerant - a little Convivencia goes along way!

@@FlashPointHx you seem to be one of the few history channels on KZbin that actually covers this era as accurately as possible. Usually the period is covered as "All Muslims good, all Christians bad, don't question it" This is then responded by Western/At Right/Christians as "All Muslims bad, All Christians good" It's nice to see a channel that says "Some good, some bad" After all, the truth is always much more interesting than fiction

Rakean - I am really happy that you like my series and I'm impressed if you have made it up to this point - thats listening to me go on for 8 hours! I taught myself a new program for video editing a few months ago and I'm happy with the results. I'm one of those who loves learning new things so this was a nice thing to learn on the side. Still learning new functions of this program so I'm hoping to continue to adapt and change my videos as time goes by. I'll keep in mind what you have said about adding subtitles for the quoted text - I did this before and I thought that it was a bit distracting. But good to have this feed back. Definitely get to Spain - the culture is so vibrant and if you even know a small bit of Spanish they love you for it. My wife and I have been to Madrid, Toledo, and Barcelona - accumulating about a month total in the country. Can't say enough about the night life, the food, the wine, and the music! We are planning a Cordoba, Seville, and Granada circuit in the next few years or so. Again, thank you for the kind words and feedback - take care and all the best!

I'm walking in the former river bed of the Turia river in Valencia while listening to this. Truly epic to think about. Those floods El Cid used to his advantage is the reason the place where the river was is now a park. A really bad flood in the 1960s I think, influenced the local authoriries to undertake a project to divert the flow of the river out of the city. Now it's a nice park with football pitches, paths to run, trees, birds.... The green lungs of Valencia they call it. It's strange seeing the medieval bridges still crossing over.

Campeador translates a little better to Championer. The weird spelling of champion as championer instead is intentional, since that is exactly the same in Spanish with the normal word being campeón. Spanish is my first language but I’m not from Spain so I’m not that familiar with the story and why it might be different
@japhfo
@japhfo Жыл бұрын
'Campeador' comes from the verb 'campear' - to campaign, to take the field in open battle (See 'Campo'- a field, open country). 'Campeon' is also cognate with 'campear' originally meaning someone who triumphs, is victorious on campaign, on the field of battle. 'The Champion' isn't a bad translation. 'The Battler,' is perhaps more accurate (notwithstanding Alfonso 1of Aragon's title "El Batallador') but less colloquial. 'Great Warrior' has the best sense of it.

@@FlashPointHx In general the Reconquista is kind of like the hundred years war, with the bulk of the conflict taking place between 1086 to 1212. Sagrajas and Alarcos are probably the worst defeats the Christians ever suffered too, remember that at Hattin the Christian forces only numbered 20,000 men according to contemporary sources, whereas they numbered over 80,000 men at Sagrajas and 100,000-150,000 men at Alarcos. Saladin is also a very overrated commander, he was unable to score a decisive victory at Montgisard and Arsuf despite having a numerical and strategical advantage, and at Hattin the Crusaders were fatigued and not even able or willing to fight.

This was originally a podcast on iTunes that I cross platformed to KZbin. On iTunes, I had a perfect five star rating - until I started talking about Islamic history. Suddenly I got a bunch of crap ratings - despite the fact that I had greatly upgraded my recording equipment and had better scripted narrative. So be it - I’m committed to telling this history.

This story is exceedingly difficult to tell - the sources are a bit murky and the opinions of what really happened are wide. Each episode requires quite a bit of reading to find that plausible middle ground - But I’m glad you like it

@@FlashPointHx It is sad that people treat either an entire race or religion as one and the same. The facts are that the Moors greatly benefited Spain at a time when Europe had gone backwards during the so called Dark Ages. The Almohads were very accomodating of other religions and in many old churches, synagogues and mosques it is evident that craftsman of all faiths worked together as they used signature workmanship and iconography of their own religion. In fact when the Christians recaptured Toledo, the vast scholarly literature of the Moors that was captured helped kick start the Renaissance, as scholars from as far as England and Italy came to study at Toledo. The Moors took what they captured ftom the Greeks and their scholars advanced their studies even further, which is why we still use Arabic numerals.

You forgot that Muhammad ibn Tumart was very versed in Islam, he learned from All Muslim groups, he was among most versed in Islam, and memorized all books of Faith's of even most heterodox groups, he debated Christians, Jews, All Muslim sects scholars and won over them and didn't lose any scholarly religious debate at all in court of Ali ibn Tashfin of Al-Andalus, he became so full of himself that he thought of himself as the Mahdi, the Prophecized redeemer of Islam, highest title equivalent of that of messiah. He was so sure that he went and debated all of Maghreb region and defeated all scholars with evidence and gain so much followers, he became even stricter than Almoravids, he even accused his very extremist fellow Sunni Maliki Almoravids of being very corrupt and leanient in Islam and so he issued a Fatwa( Religious decree) against Almoravids calling them apostates and thus have to be killed without mercy. He killed over 100,000 Almoravids in Maghreb. LOL what a man he was! His extremism knew no boundaries!! But his successor Abd-Al-Mu'min ibn Ali was less strict.

Waiting this again, i notice that Ibn Tashfin place the Taifa army on the front of his, and between his and there was a ditch between them, why he seems using the Taifa Army as fodder. Alphonso also do something similar by placing Aragonese in the front but there's no ditch between them, by looking how the muslim didn't attack first can we asumsi that the Christian has stronger army? About Almoravid, you said there's no separation between state and church, i think Islam doesn't have that concept, Christians also only have that concept after the following centuries

Unclear. Wikipedia says: "his death was likely a result of the famine and deprivations caused by the siege", he was 56, somewhat old of the period. It was during the siege of Valencia by the Almoravids, indeed.

I wish you would answer my question if you can and want to take your time for. Before the battle of Sagrajas/marqat Zalaqqa. There were messages between Alfanso and Yusuf ibn Tashfin, Yusuf sent "You wanted to fight me here I'm. I will give you three options, convert, Jizya or war. What's your choice?" Alfanso obviously picked war but also tried to trick Yusuf. He wrote that Friday is the holiday of the Muslims and Sunday is for the Jews and Saturday is for the Christians let's delay the battle.".The Taifa leaders told Yusuf it was an obvious trick and that Alfanso will attack on Friday. I know October 23, 1086 was a Friday and Alfanso obvious did the first charge but was the attempted trickery true?

I have not heard this account - getting even simple information about what happened during the battle was difficult to find and the sources had a tendency to conflict and be vague. Now I will say this - Alfonso was a smart shrewd man. I’m pretty sure he orchestrated his brothers assassination. He was also exiled to Toledo before his rise to power and had considerable experience with the culture of the Moors and Islam - with that knowledge I wouldn’t put it past him to use the holy day against them. If El Cid waited till after Ramadan to attack at the Battle of Cuarte then why wouldn’t Alfonso use Friday as well?
@amak3

@Alinero bright I can not read arabic - I have met a lot of people online who follow my show that have been very generous with their time and have translated for me. What your friend asked is true - Friday was used as a trick. As I also mentioned - other christians used their knowledge of islam to attack - EL CID attacked after Ramandan was over - knowing his opponent would be weak after a month of daytime fasting.

At the height of their religious fervour, the Almoravids took the city of Cordoba, one of the crown jewels of the Islamic world, and they were horrified at the luxury, beauty, culture and refinement that they saw there. The splendour of that metropolis offended their staunch, Islamist, fundamentalist beliefs. The Jihadists went of a rampage: burning the palaces, villas, business establishments libraries and pleasure gardens. Indiscriminately, they slaughtered civilians: Muslim, Christian and Jew, men, women and children; old and young alike. The Jihadists, then, turned their eyes to the great Palace of Cordoba, a complex renowned and revered throughout the Arab Muslim world, that had been the home of the Umayyad Caliphs, and torched it with all its buildings, residences and gardens. When they left, Cordoba was a smoldering ruin with corpses' littering the streets. Only the Great Mosque of Cordoba and other mosques, out of all the prominent buildings, were left untouched.

@@FlashPointHx perhaps you have a point, but muslims were pretty rich back then from looting across Northern Africa and in Iberia itself of course, and food shortages in the rest of Europe during medieval times did not affect them (at least not so much). Fasting also doesn't work like that. I've fasted for almost a month once [not because I'm muslim tho] without eating day OR night and as soon as I ate again I felt my strength coming back again. As soon as you eat again you immediately feel rejuvenated which is exactly what muslims would have felt after they ate after the sun went down.

Why do you keep the Jews out of the picture when they were as much as present, involved and affected by all this just like the Muslims & Christians.
