great video! You're the only person I've seen demonstrating the flat billets. It was very informative and I really like how you showed the details of isolating platforms too!

You make it look so effortless. I decided to try a couple of weeks ago with a big piece of obsidian. Now I have a little piece of obsidian. I think I made slingshot ammo. It's more round than flat.

Nice demonstration. Makes sense. You people who know what you're doing need to make it look a lot harder though. Maybe let someone like me put a few stacks and hinges on there and make it all irregular.

Great videos, you go into more detail than a lot of others do. I just started snapping and I bought 20 lbs of Texas chert at a great price on Ebay.They are round but thin nodules. They average about 6" long, 4 " wide and 1" deep. That stuff is tougher than a 60 year old hooker. I cant.figure out how to place the first strike because they.are so smooth there aren't any platforms I can see. Obviously a river rock at some point. Any ideas?

Thank you for explaining the differences between flat and round billets. Seems to be the main reason why my pieces won't thin until I go to indirect. But one question, how often do you get flakes in your eyes?
@russellthornberry5 жыл бұрын
Most helpful!
@j.shorter47163 жыл бұрын
I’ve watched this several times now and think I’ll try practicing with a flat billet. Is your indirect stick ground flat as well? It looks as if it’s flat with a slight angle to catch the edge.
@myBanjohasemgz3 жыл бұрын
It's flat on the top half of the tip, and the lower half is beveled around 45°

Jason I have not seen you bleed in any of your videos, are you just lucky, lol. Would you recomend a glove or is it better not to work with one when learning proper technique?
@myBanjohasemgz5 жыл бұрын
Lol I've cut myself pretty bad several times. I would recommend a glove while in the early stages of learning. For me I like to be able to feel the rock though. Every now and then I end up wishing I had a glove on though

Can a person use steel like a ball peen hammer? It has both flat and rounded side
@paulmax31855 жыл бұрын
Great work from a talented guy. I am surprised at how little you grind your platforms. How do you make them strong enough to get large flakes,put that much force into the piece and not have platforms failing? You don’t appear to be hitting above the edge far enough to make sure. Is that just a mistake on my part? What’s the deal ?
@myBanjohasemgz5 жыл бұрын
I dont know how to explain it exactly. I'm hitting directly on the edge though. It's all about relief with the isolation, and the the contour on the under side of the platform. And not stinking with too much velocity
@paulmax31855 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your speedy response! I guess maybe that is what separates the highly skilled guys like you and run of the mill guys like the rest of us. Jason, some of us are very interested in the techniques of the ancient knappers. A fellow with you level skill could probably make important contributions to archeology if you applied abo techniques. I am very interested in the use of the small deer tine punches found at numerous excavations. Have you used antler punches or been a consultant to archeologists? Thanks
