The biggest problem I have with flat rate is that whatever the flat rate is for the customer pay needs to be the same as warranty. For example if customer pay is 2 hours to put a coil pack on then if it’s under warranty, warranty should pay 2 hours not 0.75 . Until that is fixed then nobody wants to do warranty work.

Chrsyler paying 1.2 for wiring harnesses that take the entire day thats what screws me up or some of there pay is .4 one or both. My dealer is mostly all warranty in michigan. We work 80 to 90 hours just to turn 50 to 60 because warranty pay is so bad.

I use to make $30 an hour at Mercedes Benz for 7 years. I Quit the automotive world because it’s fucking bullshit how a parts advisor, service writer can make the same with bonus while sitting on their ass. Went back to school and now I make $48 an hr straight time as a mechanic. I work 12 hour days, 4 days a week, 5 weeks holiday after 8 years. Union shop!!! Kenworth dealership. $1000 tool allowance a year, $250 boot allowance, full benefits. If anyone calls my bullshit I’ll send my union contract to you. I’m from B.C. Canada. This isn’t even the top industry standards. Transit bus company pays their guys $51 an hour straight time because it’s government. They have it super cushy. I know a tech that made $204,000 with over time. Again if someone calls my bullshit I will email you my t4 and or we can go for coffee. My advice for mechanics join a union or find a new career unless you are super passionate. I find passion dies unless you own your own shop then it tends to lasts. Starting a family while being flat rate is extremely hard. You get super tired at the end of the day and your mood will effect your family. Again that’s why a guys sitting on his ass all day tends to have a lot more energy coming home, playing sports with his kids or energy for other activities. Life’s too short to deteriorate your body as a technician. Let alone needing to spend over $10,000 on tools. As well if you wanted to buy your own home the banks tend to not lend money to guys who are flat rate here in Canada unless you had a big downpayment. I’ve been in the game for 15 years seen it all. No shop is perfect managers come and go, customers are good and bad, we need to stand together and make the industry standards the same across the board in North America.

Heavy diesel mechanic here, I am hourly with monthly bonus, our bonus is based on GP. You have the potential to make more than the branch manager, add on quarterly safety bonuses and holiday bonuses. Let's not forget the double time after hour service calls. We had a guy make almost 100k last year, I know that doesnt seem much to some folks but we live in a fairly impoverished area. Last year a guy

Warranty time in this industry is a joke. A good example for this is as a Ford mechanic, they only give you 5 hours to replace a evaporator on a new Mustang v8. I would love to get these time writers and put them in one of Jigsaws games and if they don't do it in the times given, well you your imagination. ;)

70 hours and up a week is only done by severely cutting corners, getting fed gravy constantly, or screwing customers over by overcharging on labor times. ... i do a fair mix of warranty and cp work at a cdjr dealer, work about 50 to 60 hours a week and average about 50 to 60 flag. Unless ur at a dealer that pays really good for warranty, or just don't have to do any real work, 70 and up just doesn't happen.

You should discuss the topic of non reusable hardware. I worked for a Ford Dealer for a few years so I can't speak for other manufacturers. One of the biggest problems I had was with non reusable hardware, You could spend 30-45 minutes reading workshop manual, writing down all the parts you need then trying to get "parts" to find the non reusable hardware was another time consuming task that of course I don't get paid for and so far Ford refuses to list the non reusable hardware required for all their procedures. I have had times where I found a big short cut time on a major job but... I couldn't do the short cut because the procedure required replacing hardware that could only be replaced by not taking the shortcut. Your punished for being efficient, if you tell Ford about the short cut your time gets cut anyway. The system is broken. Flat rate is nothing more than a method of putting all the inefficiencies that the manufacturer and the dealer should solve and makes the technician eat it. I finally found an hourly Union job with benefits, I will never work for another dealership or independent shop ever again.

The flat rate will never die. Dealership owners and car companies are saving a boatload of cash screwing mechanics why would they give it up. No medical, no 401k, no guaranty, the pecking order in dealerships. That why more mechanic getting out than coming into this field of work. P. S When your name came up in the training center the Chrysler rep said let see how much longer he is employed with us.

By paying hourly you will get better techs and better work out the door equals more return customers. Flat rate will die as dealerships are closing down. Hourly pay forces management to only keep as many techs as work they have. If they do t have work the dealer looses out not the mechanic. Remember the techs don’t own the dealership and don’t get profit sharing. Instead of keeping horrible tech and keeping them they have to pay more hourly and keep the good ones. They used the flat rate system to profit the dealership for the longest time. Now the dealership and management will pay the price aka dealer closing down and cars being sold online already happening. You will see in the next 5 years lots of dealers will be closing down

For me when i make hours i'm not stress and my crohn's stays under control. When i'm stressed because i'm not making hours it flares up bad. Someone like me if i was salary, id have the same performance as being flat rate... Most of the time you break even, good week, bad. My best year was the year i was really sick and pretty much dying and missed 9 weeks of work with out pay. every other year i have fallen 12-18k short of that. Health care is outrageous, and no sick time, and only 2 weeks vacation is a joke. I feel like we are treated like slaves. not to mention when you have to work Saturdays... At our dealership, they have tech teams. This team of 3 or 4 pool their hours and divide it. It prevents favoritism, it limits how much recalls and warranty affect you, and it means techs are more willing to help each other out. The only thing that's weird is that it's not an even distribution of hours, it's not 25% x 4, but the more experienced get a higher percent. I think it should just be a difference in hourly rate, and then divide it evenly. Alleviates a lot of dealership-type problems, but not all of them.

many many conflicting arguments here.. does your employer understand the caliber of work being done? (mostly in field work application) also is the customer willing to pay? most of that comes down to if the service manager can properly be able to speak to customers, and either explain the situation or tell the customer to take a walk because everyone nowadays wants everything for nothing. techs seem to get alot of flack for only doing what they are told.

You have what a 30K box. Would ya have bought such working hourly for say 25-30 an Hour not even bringing up cost of tools ? Flat rate is good for those those who are good Which you seem to be. I know finding new workers/techs is hard Deal with same in my area Solod hourly wage is answer for them until real for flat rate We can teach them more than they will ever learn in a classroom. But will agree flat rate only good for the experienced with a lot of tools and all thosem tools are not awlways in our big boxes Many are just knowledge we just have from years of experience

My shop is hourly, and i hate how i put way more effort in than my coworker with a similar skill level and we end up with the same paycheck. He does mainly r&r has comebacks often and is usually seen standing around, while im doing A level electrical diag on the daily, and sweeping the floors, taking the trash out when the work slows down. Thats enough to piss a guy off

I think flat rate is dying and the tech shortage is eventually going to get so bad they're going to be forced to just promise better pay upfront. If you think about it you have to invest so much to really become a good mechanic and be able to make really good money compared to other trades where in less time with way less invested you can make way more money a lot easier. Cars are getting way to complex for this system to last and we're needing to buy way too many new specialty tools. If you make your shop a good place to work youll get good techs that dont need flat rate to motivate them to be productive. Just for reference I work on euro cars and we get the headache cars no one wants to work on. Try working flat rate system in that environment and you'll hate it.

Just leave the auto repair business or do not get into .. it’s not profitable .. it’s the worst possible way to make a good living .. and if your a good tech .. it’s even worse . For 39 years that I’ve been in this business fixing cars they been saying flat rate is going away . Bullshit .. the reason tech leave the business is because it’s no longer profitable techs are needed in government jobs, town jobs railroad jobs it’s endless .. why would you spend your time your tools your back .. for a job that pays .8 tenths of an hour and it takes you 1.5 .. for various reasons who loses ? You do .. tell your story walking. No heat no a/c no respect for your skill .. no respect for you

I think that your not able to just skate by working hourly, my whole career if they are paying you for every minute you better be working every minute and I've never seen an employer afraid to tell you to load your iron at these places because these are places and jobs that are seeked at least where I live.

Performance reviews? You must be kidding! around here they don't do performance reviews that I know of, you do the job or you get fired. Period. Almost seems like you live in a different part of the world. People around here don't like to work, don't like to have jobs, and those that do either do their job or get fired. And this goes for more than just automotive. They say unemployment is 11% but that's only based on the 11% who are actually looking for a job. Around here everybody shacks up with a baby mama. There is so much of a separation between lower class and upper class. Middle-class almost doesn't exist. This is the biggest reason that I want to be an independent. And as far as income, I only make about $100 a week more than you pay for your family insurance. There is no way I could survive paying that. But then again I have no dependents.
