Project update! Looking for cracks in the 1940 239 Flathead V8. We are going to attempt to get this engine running so we can put it in a hot rod! In this video, we start the cleanup process and hunt for cracks on the deck surface, around the valve seats, and around the cylinders.
There's a lot of work to do. It needs new gaskets, water pumps, fuel pump, carburetor, distributor, plugs and wires, and much more. We will build a run stand and fire this thing up!!!
There's still plenty to do on the channel! Subscribe and click the notification bell so you don't miss a thing! Please leave a comment, and thanks for watching!!
Coming up soon on the Model A project... More trunk repair, chassis fabrication, finishing the rear subrails, fitting oversize door pins, rebuilding door latches, rust repair on the doors and quarter panels, and much more!
Thanks for watching!

Thanks for sharing, Phillip! That block is cleaning-up right nice! Take a look at cylinders #4 and #8...the pistons are installed backwards. Have a wonderful Holiday! Bro Harry

Yes sir, it is cleaning up nice. I noticed those pistons, but I'm not sure why they did that. With it being both pistons at the back, it almost seems they did it on purpose, but why would they? I'm going to have to investigate that a little further. I may end up turning them around.

@@phillipshotrodgarage Make certain the rods are facing the correct direction. If memory serves me, all of the arrows on the pistons face the front of the block because of an engineering offset cast into the block.

Looks pretty decent motor so far! I didnt know about that gasket remover, i'll try that next time, when i have to mess with powdercoated parts.

I think the old motor is going to turn out pretty good. Give that CRC a try!

Yes sir, it’s pretty warm here. I’m around 400 miles from you, and you’re further south, so I know it’s hot there. Have a great 4th.

Engine is looking promising so far...Phillip Like the others have mentioned,, #4&8 are different and the I also noticed that you have 2 Ford valves on one head

The pistons are definitely odd the way they are installed. And I guess that when the engine was rebuilt, it only had a couple of good original valves, and the rest were replaced.

The pistons look like they have arrows on them. But they don't all point the same directions. Does that mean anything on those pistons? I know on some pistons/engines, the arrow/dot has to be in a specific orientation. Looking forward to the next one. This video kind of makes me want to tear apart my '49 flathead.

I'm not sure what is going on with that piston orientation. It seems odd to me, but I'm new to flatheads, so I'm looking into whether they are supposed to be that way or not, or if it was a old rebuild trick they did, or just simply someone messed up on assembly. I don't know on that yet.

Learned something new with you today ---- PLASTIC RAZOR BLADES ----- WHAT? ---- What's next ----- Something to keep in mind --- the SMELL of a product since you were comparing two --- might make a long term difference ----- like your Sea Foam over the Degreaser you were even inside a garage with a fan ---- yesterday --- I was working outside in a carport using the PB Blaster for about 30 -40 minutes began feeling kind of sick from the fumes and it don't go away very fast ------- and you had gloves on ---- PB Blaster will make your hands tingle if not wearing gloves ---- When time comes ---- sounds like a --- GOOD --- idea to pop off the Intake and Heads to see what the surfaces look like ----- Gasket Set shouldn't be too costly ----------- Will have to --- Tune in Next Week for the continuing saga of ------ WHAT'S WITH THE PISTONS ------------ Have a Good 4th ----------- Rodeny

We use the plastic razor blades in the body shop quite often for removing stripes, cleaning glass, stuff like that. I thought I might need them to help scrape the carbon from the pistons without scratching up the aluminum, but turns out the pistons don't have a hard build up on them. Have a good 4th!

Looks like they put the wrong one on the wrong rod, could take them off and correct the problem, sometimes people are either blind or just plain dumb.

What are you going to do about the one piston being in backwards.

I don't know yet. I just realized that when I was cleaning it up. Both rear pistons are like that, #4 and #8. I've built a lot of engines, and I've never seen that before. I don't know if that is a flathead thing or not, if they turned them that way for some specific reason. So I've got to look into it and see.

Why do remove the stud bolts?
@phillipshotrodgarage
@phillipshotrodgarage Жыл бұрын
Are you asking why I did not remove them? They are difficult and time consuming to remove. So, they only need to be removed if you are going to replace them.
