In 1981 I was stationed at the Navy's first Air Traffic control station using computers to combine multiple radar signals from 'further' locations to create a much larger area for aircraft surveillance. They had multiple workstations as well as the Controller monitors all hooked up. When the Airspace was returned to the FAA at night there wasn't much to do but the civilian contractors maintaining the code and equipment had loaded ZORK (text based) for something to mess with. I personally could create my own 'maps' on a Monitor which wasn't being used as well as fake targets which would be used for training purposes. I decided to make a race course and would used the keystroke commands for heading to guide the target through the course. My superiors just looked and went on . . . . They appreciated my eagerness to understand how the new systems worked. :)

It is interesting that the adventures of Hellblade, i.e. Senua, were not even mentioned, even though the Unreal engine, its graphics and the way it was made, or its real-time motion capture presentation would have been distinctly unique and fitting here.

Great video, I'm reliving some of these games in my head now :) Parallax effects were introduced in the 1980s when 16-bit machines were powerful enough to handle the graphics requirements, like Shadow of the Beast (1989) by Psygnosis. IBM PCs were not up to the graphical standard of the Amiga at the time. That came later when dedicated graphics cards emerged. Vector 3d games were also around in the '80s. See the original Star Wars arcade machine, or StarGlider on the Amiga. I wouldn't describe parallax as a 2.5d style, although it's obviously a hybrid solution before we get to full 3d. There were plenty of isometric games that used this style, including The Sims, as mentioned in the video. Defining a 'real' 3D game isn't easy. Virtua Racing was THE 3D pioneer in the arcades. Doom was a revolutionary 3d style game in terms of presentation, but it's a 2d game in how it plays. There's no real 3rd dimension to interact with in the environment, and the enemies are all 2d sprites. (I think) Quake or Dark Forces was one of the earliest real 3D FPS games. Once games were using polygons to generate the images things were more properly 3d, so systems like the Playstation or Saturn were the real turning point here.

Parallax scrolling pre-dates 16 bit computers, some games on C64 used them. 16 bit computers allowed more layers to be calculated improving the effect. The first 3D rendered games on consoles really began on SNES games like Starwing which had a RISC based accelerator (the SuperFX chip) fitted into the cartridge allowing objects to be rendered using polygons instead of sprites.
@pd77uk Жыл бұрын
@@darthwiizius I did not realise that about the C64. I had a Spectrum :) You're right about the FX chip, that really pushed things forward. I meant turning point in the sense of mainstream/popularised. It was the following generation of consoles which really took it mainstream with native hardware.
@darthwiizius Жыл бұрын
@@pd77uk Yeah the extra processing and memory really did help with parallax effects, on C64 it was typically a front layer and a back layer of very simple backgrounds where the 16 bit machines threw a middle layer and added a lot more detail. SNES really took it again by being able to render 2 separate grids simultaneously, one full resolution and one low resolution allowing for additional transparency effects in games like Kirby 3 (or was it 4?, it was a long time ago). Fun fact about the SuperFX chip: It was developed by a UK team and originally offered to SEGA who rejected it. The team later went on to develop the Gamecube GPU and then were bought out by ATi just before launch. ATi were then bought out by AMD so they could get into the GPU market.

Starting in the 1980s we had arcade machines, Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum Amstrad CPC and as the years went by in the 1990s we had the PS1, N64 and PCs and Dreamcast. By 2000 we got the PS2 and Xbox Original and GameCube.

Hello sir, I watch your videos constantly and I like them very much.I had a question, how can I find the list of all the games in the world and can I download them?I would be very happy if you could help me. So, for example, how many games were released in a certain year and their names . If I wrote wrong, my grammar is not good
@kingdavewoody Жыл бұрын
I doubt that list exists. It would be like a list of books ever released. You could do it by getting individual lists of games distributed by publishers, but they're so numerous it would probably drive you insane lol
