Fantastic, congrats! I started fly fishing for trout, like many, in the Rockies, where I live. Just got into the salt a couple years ago. Obviously I have to travel, and it's all been guided. Want to come to the Caymans. There's a couple of sections of flats right? What area do you suggest for a tourist, where I can maybe go out for a couple days on my own? I'm sure I'll be staying around the 7 mile beach area, but always love getting away from the crowd.
@watermancallum11 ай бұрын
yes there are a handful of bonefishy areas that are accessible on foot. The south side of the island is usually best as the wind typically blows from the north east. If there is a strong southerly wind, you can fish the north side. You will want to rent a car to get to these spots though. Google maps is very useful. Look out for "beach access" signs along the side of the road that mark the public access points to the shoreline. You can also fish on seven mile, the early morning being the best time as there are less people.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate your response, I know most fisherman are hesitant, me as well, that's why I didn't ask for specifics. That's also what I was thinking, drive around and any "public access" spots should be ok? There seems to be a lot of private beach on G.C. but it did look on Google earth like there are some decent flats accessible from public spots. I like the idea too of hitting some of those canals for tarpon. There's a lot of those running along roads you can just pull over to? @@watermancallum
@watermancallum11 ай бұрын
@@jefferywheaton40 yeah there are some canals that have little tarpon in them but they can be hit or miss, there are less canals then there used to be unfortunately.

Solid camera work and commentary! Great job! Especially nice job of not getting 'buck fever' and rushing your casts when you spot fish or when you earlier in the day missed a bonefish and then recast several times to eventually get another one on. That bonefish you hooked up earlier in the day, would have loved to have seen that one, too! I'm not too surprised about the bonefish eating the fly while it's not moving. I fished the Keys many years ago and while wading a flat had an opportunity to cast to a couple of very nice bonefish. I got their attention and they approached the fly; I got excited and did little quick strips, and the fish spooked. I was told later that fish in weedy locations, like I was, once they spot the fly, expect the prey to 'hide' in the weed; so, I shouldn't have moved the fly, and should have let the fish tail on it. Who knows, but it was from a reliable experienced source. That bit of guidance appears to overlap onto what happened to you.
@watermancallum3 жыл бұрын
thanks! Yes I think that theory of letting the fly sit in the weeds is true. Especially when fishing shrimp or crab patterns. I have also tried short quick strips when the bonefish finds the fly and have spooked them that way. I usually don't like to not move the fly because sometimes you can't tell if or when the fish eats it. I have had some success doing long slow strips because I can feel when the fish bites. It's something that i'm still learning and it can be very hard to decide the right retrieval of the fly when your knees are shaking and your heart is pounding because a bonefish is staring at your fly in a few inches of water. Thanks for the comment!

Great vid. Im absolutly shocked to see a redington Behemoth reel last this long in the salt. Ive gone through 3 with until I said screw it and got a Grande and its held up for 3 years so far.

yeah a lot of the paint has chipped off and I did recently re-grease the drag system but its still going strong. I've got a 9 weight Grande and they are definitely worth the extra cash over the behemoth.

How’d it go
@funkyforager3897 Жыл бұрын
@@ChristianBockelmann poorly. The upper keys are so very limited for DIY wading. It's really a flats boat game there, the public lands are small, the mangrove nature of the keys doesn't allow for wading, its a challenge. Not to say it's not an incredible part of the world and lots of fun to visit and explore around.

My daughter has been living in GC for 20 years. I just started fly fishing a couple of years ago and haven’t caught anything yet in GC. She lives in South Sound now and I’m heading there for December. Have you ever fished and had any luck in South Sound
@watermancallum Жыл бұрын
Yeah I’ve fished south sound a fair few times over the years. It can be good but nowadays there are a lot of areas in the sound that are not accessible by foot due to big houses and apartment condos being built but definitely worth a shot if it’s not super windy. Make sure to have some small baitfish imitations as well as shrimp patterns. Those patterns catch everything in the shallows.

@@watermancallum thanks, did you get any problem with sargasso in September? I was in Mexico last September and the sargasso condition was still issue but not very bad like in the July, that month was horrible.
@watermancallum3 жыл бұрын
@@derekzieba6315 its is quite rare for the sargasso weed to be too thick to fish. Most of the flats in grand cayman are protected by barrier reefs so it rarely covers the flats. there are times were it can be little bit in the way of bonefishing but if that happens there is usually tarpon around the sargasso.
