Let’s talk about the word “oga.” Some Igbos say oga is a shortened word from oganraya or oganlaya meaning boss or rich person. Some Yorubas say it is not a borrowed word and it is home to Yoruba. Others say that it is a shared word across Nigeria. What do you think? Also, on a scale from 1-10, how was my Igbo cultural dance? 🤭😂

I must commend, you did great with the Interpretation "Nzugbu nzugbu Enyimba enyị" is a popular phrase in Igbo land used when warriors are going to war or have conquered.... Translating it is not necessary because the direct translation outside Igbo Language have no meaning

You tried with the translation. It might be interesting to note that Flavour uses a lot of idioms in his songs so it doesn't loosely translate into what one would ordinarily think it is. Ngabasi for example is awe or aura but normally it would represent ebube or glory

I read the comments below and saw Ebube attributed to glory. I don't think Ebube means glory in Igbo. Ebube is what something is without it's physical manifestation. So to me that would be the essence

what does "who dey" mean please
@simbihawt3 ай бұрын
Who dey here is shortened from the slang “who dey breathe” which is asking who is breathing. It’s an exaggerated way to say that everyone else should be silenced or like gagging. Their prominence should choke you (similar to another slang “e choke”)

Nah, oga is without a doubt a Yoruba word. Ndi oga from my little understanding of igbo probably roughly means "bosses". Some Yoruba words tend to seep into Igbo due to the large population of igbo in Lagos especially words that have already made it into the naija pidgin English which i can say "oga" has. I'm sure there are some other words that travel the other direction as well. I just can't think of any at the moment
@simbihawt Жыл бұрын
LOL I am happy to see you here. Thanks for the breakdown and I agree in that words can be shared in both ways. The full word that some igbos say it comes from is oganraya/oganlaya. Have you heard about this?
@tok1879 Жыл бұрын
@@simbihawt lol thanks. Always glad to view your uploads! 😂 I never knew there were any debates about this word. It's crazy that the internet is so full of misinformation. It's like the more information available to everyone, the larger the population of flat earthers become. As far as i know Oga has always been the word in Yoruba. And its usage is to the level that's it's been adopted in pidgin as well. I'm not sure how ogaranya, a word that means something different, that is used much less and has to go through some tortuous explanation to make the link, could then be the source . There's also onye isi - which literally means head person in Igbo and is used for boss. I'm sure there might be other words as well. But I think I'd stick with occam's razor on this and go with the simple explanation which is that it's Yoruba. There are similar debates about Yoruba words like oyinbo as well. I find it all kinda amusing if anything.
@simbihawt Жыл бұрын
Please which one is “go through some tortuous explanation to make the link” 😂. In case someone did not tell you this today, I’m here to tell you that you are actually very funny lol. Thanks so much for your input. I hope others share as well.
