Sweet Dave, thank you for sharing your finds. My days of treasure hunting started in the early 70s. Mom & Dad passed on their knowledge onto us four while they owned an antique shop, may the thrill of the find never elude your spirit.

That leather round knife is a big gun! And the brass “not a door knob” looks like a stitching groover. Never saw one with a brass knob before. You set the desired width using the missing wing screw and then drag the wide portion along the outside edge of your leather and the awl portion scribes a line into the leather to guide stitches.

Way to pick. Good find on the anvil and selling it as you walk around, must have really been something special for the blacksmith to pay you double what you paid. All kinds of good buys.

Great stuff!! My find today... a giant, and I mean giant, tub of 1970s action figures and parts and boy toys. Can’t wait to go through it all and hopefully make some $$ (I paid $15 for entire thing)

Button making was one of those cottage industries that flourished here on Delmarva. There were a number of factories in towns across the peninsula. People could either work at those plants, or if they had their own equipment they could work at home when they were off duty from their day jobs. They were paid by the pound. A skilled cutter could produce anywhere from 100 to 300 pounds a week. Blank button disks were stamped out of shells. Chemical baths were used to treat and tint them. Some factories completed the process drilling the holes. Others would simply turn out the disks and ship them to other factories to finish making them into buttons and sequins. The last family owned button factory in the country was the Martinek plant on Elliot Island in Dorchester County, Maryland. The Martineks moved here from New Jersey in the 1950's. Their equipment and related memorabilia was donated to the Vienna Heritage Museum after they closed in 1999. At the height of their success, Elvis Presley and the Barbie doll had costumes made with Martinek sequins. I live on the Delmarva Peninsula and walk some of the beaches. I am always excited when I find a shell button, they are so beautiful.
