Come Together is the Rickenbacker 4001s with nylon tapewounds. He only ever used the bass pickup. Definitely a plectrum, and I'm voting third finger as well. And of course it's a mic'ed amp (from some distance actually) not a DI.

My guess is that Paul starts on the first finger, the plays the high F with his pinky on the 15th fret of the D string. The tone (timbre?) is richer up there than on the 10th fret of the G string. BTW, I also play the second (fast) verse of "Taxman" a similar way. It makes it easier to get the slides in there.

@@kennet7837Hmm, I got the opposite impression from the isolated track. Maybe it's just my G string sounds too thin. The slide down off the F especially sounds longer and better on the D string - where Paul did his slides for "Dear Prudence" the year before. I also find it easier to do a nice wide vibrato with my pinkie on the D string. Try it - you may like it.

McCartney himself said that Bass Lines don’t have to be original. It was in reference to his part on ‘Saw her standing there’, being directly lifted from the bass line of a Chuck Berry song. Think it was ‘can’t catch me’ ❤

I always assumed it was more of an homage than a rip off. I definitely don't think it was conscious theft, not that anyone said it was. It also could have been a thing like in a band I was in once. One aspect that is never taken into account when discussing whether or not someone has plagiarized is that it is often done unconsciously. That is, we have stored in our memory and subconscious so many hours and hours of musical patterns that it is inevitable that they do not influence, consciously or not, the music you compose. In my case it has happened to me on a few occasions that I discovered something I composed was similar to something I heard in the past and I didn't realize it until much later when I listened again to the related riff or groove unconsciously plagiarized. On top of all this, there is so much music composed today that it's very likely that anything you genuinely compose in an original way will resemble something someone else composed in another time and place. It's a matter of statistics.

I find "Give It Away" to be deceptively hard to play. Playing the right notes is easy. But to really nail the timing is difficult. I always tend to rush those fills, particularly the second one. It's just two notes, and they come right before the start of the next measure. My tendency is to want to play them a little too early. I have to really count, which ends up making it feel a bit mechanical.

One similarity that wasn't mentioned is the rhythm. In both of the target note of the slide lands on the 2nd beat, and the high note lands on the and of 2. And the slide to the high notes is a pretty unique technique that makes both of these riffs stand out. I'm pretty sure it was at least subconscious influence because of how similar the riffs are. I guess "rip off" kind of assumes malicious intent, so I wouldn't call it that. But I would be a bit surprised if the bassline wasn't influenced by Come Together, at least subconsciously.

there are some pictures of the Abbey Road sessions on which Paul's Rickenbacker was strung with black nylon tapewound strings in the first half of 1969 (also considering the Ric scene on the Get Back documentary in January '69, which was already strung with nylon just like the '63 Höfner). also there are some photos of the bass in 1970 with flatwound strings, but it seems he pretty much used tapewounds during Abbey Road. so it was probably recorded with the Rickenbacker 4001 with tapewound strings.

I don't see anything as ever being ripped off because in all honesty, to the best of my understanding, there's really only 7 keys and the chords within them. Those being A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. Every chord we play is going to be a voicing such as A7, Am, Asus7 or G7, G# or Gb as example. All revolves around the Master Seven. Everything else is really just a voicing however fretted or wherever fretted. Beyond unique voicings of the Master Seven; it's a matter of tempo, beat, strum patterns, picking techniques, a particular instrument(s) and electronic effects that give the impression of distinct and unique music. Having this mixture of qualities applied to any composition is likely why so many songs we hear were written on just a handful of commonly used chords. As an example, listen to RHCP playing a cover of the Ohio Players song "Love Rollercoaster". By establishing their own unique composition of these qualities manifests a perceived distinction from the original. As such, even a song played exactly same way as the original (chord for chord) or not (different voicings) may sound quite unique and yet entirely familiar.

When Flea wrote the Give It Away bassline he was totally immersed in "alternative" music with a hardcore punk attitude and was anti-anything-considered-mainstream at the time and in the past up to that point. He "hated" Paul McCartney and made some rather disparaging remarks about him in interviews around that time so I highly doubt he would have consciously ripped anything off and/or was inspired by Paul McCartney's playing in any way. His punkrock f-everyone stance has softened somewhat over the years of course and has since paid tribute to McCartney in more recent interviews.

I guess Rick Rubin was inspired by the Beatles, perhaps... He doesn’t want Flea to play too many notes. Flea was/ is a great musician with a jazz background and a punk-with-an-eye-blink attitude. He’s no no-no. I guess neither Rick nor Flea were thinking about the Beatles here. But Rick’s notion about leaving space is certainly the best one to give to a player who’s job it was up untill that point to keep the band together by playing many notes and lead the bunch. They had a great, just emerging (after one album), rhythm section back there: the best they ever had (bass, drums, guitar). But, my guess is, they did not know this at the time to be the case. In the earlier band they had one super functioning time-keeper: Flea. Now, since ‘Mother’s Milk’ they had three... I guess it took some time to really get this. This particular album is super great, because of the space Flea leaves in almost all of the songs! It’s super funky! Mr. Rubin might have been a leading guidance in this. And, they got it! This album, for me, is their Rumors, their Sgt. Peppers, their Back in Black and A night at the Opera! I think all of them knew their Beatles’ songs (and than some...), but these weren’t a direct inspiration to this particular song. But, I might be so wrong...🤣! What’s also great, is the fact that for years and years bassist thought this was thé new Ernie Ball StingRay bass album!! That’s because he used to play those live a lot back than. But it wasn’t all EB StingRays, like on Mother’s Milk... There’s just StingRay 5 and some fretless on the album. The rest is Wal and Alembic basses. The StingRays were just easy to use (and cheaper (back than, a nice StingRay 4 was about a 1000 dollars new) live. We did not know it wasn’t StingRays all through at the time, and many of us bought StingRays. So did I. 🤣. I still love them. Tool had the same thing a few years later in ‘92/‘93.: all Wal on albums; StingRays live... I guess Ernie Ball did not mind..., 😄! They sold zillions of StingRays because of those two bands at the time!! Cheers! 🖖

Well, they may be functionally similar but they are clearly independent of each other, they have a different vibe and Flea's riff is certainly not "stolen". But even if it were, Paul wouldn't mind. For one thing, Come Together itself actually WAS plagiarized from Chuck Berry's You Can't Catch Me (melody and opening line) and Paul's bass part was written to help hide that by changing the song's vibe. He also admitted to lifting the bassline from another Chuck Berry song (I'm Talking About You) note for note for I Saw Her Standing There and since no one seemed to care, he concluded that "a bass riff hasn’t got to be original.”

I don’t think it was a rip off at all. Similar? Sure. As far as “come together”… IMO it’s the Ricky. Of course flats and with a pick. The hofner by then didn’t really play in tune. The jazz sounds a little more ploppy. There are pics of him from the sessions for abbey road with the Ricky as well.

hello, does not the whole Pearl Jam discography contain this kind of octave or tonic to seventh bass lines?

Paul McCartney explained how the piano lick in Lady Madonna was based an old 50's rock and roll piano tune by Humphrey Lyttelton called Bad Bunny Blues. Back in the 50's and 60's everyone was copying each other. Elvis Presley's entire career is borrowed material. They didn't think anything of it back then.

what's it with the glove?
@devinebass Жыл бұрын
The reason Scott sometimes wears gloves is because he has a neurological condition called Focal Dystonia and the gloves prevent him from having involuntary muscle movements. Cheers!!
