I originally thought that the horror that the dad showed whe he dropped the tray - the desperate "she mustn't see!" meant either she was an abusive bully - which seemed quite likely in S! - or he was keeping some infirmity from her - like he was trying to hide some early symptoms of dementia. Bill Paterson who plays the father is a good actor.
