Thank you for doing this video! This video may very well transform my severely limited relationship with my drum carder! Can't wait to try carding this way! Thanks again!

Your locks are in such beautiful uniform condition pre-carding. Have you ever thought of skipping the carding step and spinning from the lock? Your patience is amazing. My fiber always looks more crazy before carding. Please continue making fiber related videos. They are enjoyable!

Donna C thank you! I think it's the way I wash them that helps to keep the locks intact. I have only played around with spinning from locks. I think I prefer to have everything nicely open and prepared for spinning before starting a new project. I do plan on making many more of these so that shouldn't be a problem! 😉

Hi lovely! You could have a second layer on your tray, if you overlapped the second layer with the first it should then feed in as a sheet :) Also if you take a lock, twist it in the middle and then rub one end over your teasing tool, change ends and rub that end over the tool that will open up the tips and the locks at the same time.

Cornwall Crafter thanks for the tips! I have tried over lapping the layers but not the twisting so thanks!

OMG! It would take me years to card a batt doing it your way. I'm afraid I don't have the patience. When do you have time to spin it? I appreciate that to get a smooth batt, one must card it carefully, sometimes in several passes. Since you are doing it one lock at a time, why don't you comb it with hand combs? You get the same result, perhaps better.

I both comb and card my wool. I don't always take the time to make my batts this nice. This video was recorded soon after getting my carder. Sometimes I just put the wool on without much effort but when I want a really nice batt with no neps so that I have a high quality yarn, I'll do this. Sometimes I flick all of the locks and sometimes I comb and then card it all together. I enjoy the process and I care about the outcome. To answer your question about spinning, you make time for what you love. Although right now with a two week old and recovering from surgery I'm lucky if I can get 5 minutes of knitting in.

Hello! Do you know tpi of main carder? Unfortunately Strauch is Def closed and on description they say is universal cloth for all fibres 128 teeth per inch but how is possible blend and carding coarse medium micron with so much tpi?

I'm sorry I don't remember. I've had good luck with medium to fine fiber on this drum carder.

Hi, yes It came with my drum carder when I purchased it. You could use a flick carder to do the same thing. Essentially it's just helping to open up the fiber or locks a bit so that they feed on smoothly. It can also help dirt and VM to come out.
