The ACT party is calling for all New Zealanders to be treated equally, if they truly believe this, then this coalition Government will Repeal these Perpetual Pepper corn leasers and restore the rights of the land owners to their 'own' whenua. 😇🥰 This is the journalism New Zealand needs. "What does it say about 1 law for all New Zealanders?" It is racist and violates the Bill of Rights, that's what. The leases should be cancelled forthwith and the government should compensate both the lessees and the owners, on the same formula as for stolen land. A disincentive to pass negative racially discriminatory legislation in future. 26,000 hectares is insignificant economically. The govt administers over 2 million hectares. which must be about 5% of total land. Follow the money of Oates. Get it back, it was fraud. Shocking. Where Is there a petition to do this? I will sign it. Patama Potaka and his parties are PsOS. Give $2.9b tax payers money to 300 landlords but won't spend $400m buying out leases where the landowners are living in cars and getting $17 a year for land they should be living on and profiting from. This is why we need our independent national broadcaster.

Very enlightening. This was incredibly interesting and I agree with them. These are people that must have their land returned. It is theirs, they own it. It is acknowledged in the perpetual lease documents that they own it. It was not purchased from them in any form at any time. What amazing people bringing their case with decorum, clarity and dignity Unlike Willy Jackson who shouts over the top of everyone sidetracking off onto other topics and never letting anyone have a say on anything and is so annoying I turn off the sound on my TV before he even starts speaking. And also Rawiri Waititi with his aggressive attitude and threats, disruptions to the lives of others who are not involved through strikes and marches, thinking that by bullying, shouting and being a general nuisance he will get his own way.

@ooo-vc4xl7 ай бұрын
As a Pakeha Kiwi I am appalled at how Maori have been treated over almost two centuries. The perpetual leases should be cancelled even if it requires a 20 to 30-year time horizon to cancellation for existing lease holders to gain financial/economic value out of the remainder of the 20-30 lease to offset improvements or debt incurred. (The alternative of the Crown buying out the leases seems unlikely)

Only by the unity of our people we can write the wrongs of the past and move to a brighter future for all New Zealanders. We must unite and stand up to an oppressive government trying to slowly eradicate us. My ancestors wanted us to share our country not to be pushed out of it. All we want is what is rightfully ours. A right to self determination. We don’t have to be like the rest of the world. We can go our own way.

@dallasstrom1308 do you not understand the utter hypocrisy of your comments? You want unity, ie you want the majority to just accept your so called rights to basically do what you want, and you want self determination, but you still want to have your cake and eat it too with everyone else contributing. It's actually mind blowing in 2024, this divisive rhetoric is being pushed by media. Fortunately it won't and never will fly, until the NZ people are united part of your statement is achieved, the country will keep going backwards. I haven't seen the mainstream media covering the disgusting behavior of the maori party of late, but hey that's ok. HI THERE FOLKS! THIS IS ONE OF THE MANY "PRIVILEGES" MĀORI CONTINUE TO "ENJOY" AS DAVID SEYMOUR PUTS IT. ONLY MĀORI ARE SUBJECTED TO THIS "HONOUR" IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY. LANDLESS, MOST MĀORI ARE UNABLE TO BUILD ON THEIR OWN TRIBAL LANDS DUE TO COMPLICATED LAWS IMPOSED BY SUCCESSIVE GOVERNMENTS, AND SO ARE REDUCED TO BEING TENANTS IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY.
@TheFalconerNZ2 ай бұрын
Remember as far as politicians are concerned there is only ONE LAW - The Law that benefits THEM. As for the leaseholders that say giving the land back to the rightful owners would cost them financially THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED to the Maori that had their land STOLEN under an illegally imposed law. Ending that lease in 20 to 30 years let them live out their time on the land & gives them time to plan for moving on in a comfortable manner. Also if the government wanted that land now (for mining or an expressway say) they would be forced to move on with minimal compensation & no time to plan for the future.

At the very least and until this injustice to land owners can be corrected, ANY leasehold put on the market should be purchased back by the government, cancelled and handed back to the true owners. I cannot understand how such an unjustifiable act can be upheld in our nations courts? If the High Court of Australia can recognise the flaw of Terra Nullius then surely they can resolve against the government of New Zealand in maintaining legislation which is so fundamentally flawed in law! (and yes, I am 5th generation Pakeha from farming families on both sides. I note that while my Great Grandfather was offered leasehold land on his return from WWI, the Great Grandfather of these Māori returned from WWI to find his land taken and leased out. According to the document cited by the journalist in this video, the witness to this landowner’s enlistment papers was the same individual who engineered the confiscation of his land. It defies belief!

It's mindblowing that they have unequivocal legal title to the land yet are unable to exercise their fundamental rights of ownership. Is there no way they can attack the colonialist theft legislation and throw out the occupiers (the government, through the lessees)? Surely it's a matter between the lessees and government alone as regards any compensation the lessees may be able to assert. It can only be right to say that the entire profile of this situation has its foundation in racism, with an overlay of protecting the budget.

The Polynesians cannabilised these true "tangata whenua" and occupied their lands...THAT is how maori bacame "landowners". So I have little sympathy for the constant lies and claims of todays maori..

@darrelhenley-mc9dw urgh... if you can't comprehend that Waitaha is a tribe from Te Waipounamu... that we all existed here for centuries before yr kind arrived... and Te Tiriti was initiated in the North Island 👀 then basics are clearly too hard for you to understand. But sure, believe what you want 🙄 after all some ppl believe the world is flat 👀

I own land that used to belong to the maoris. The maoris will never get the land back. Every day I sit back, put my feet up and look out over my land with a big smile on my face. It is a wonderful feeling knowing that the maoris are really pissed off about it.

Quite a history about the Maori - put the Inca's or the Aztecs to shame in degeneration. Outcast from the Cook Islands during the 13th century as weaker primitive Neolithic people by later waves of Polynesians (Maori were from the original wave of primitive Polynesians pushed right out across the Eastern Pacific by successive stronger more advanced groups arriving from the west). They were outcast on rafts and some floated to the North East Coast of NZ driven by the South Equatorial Current and were stranded for 500 years. The weaker were pushed down to the South Island or Chathams etc. So the South Island Maori (had their own language) were the weakest of the weak. They were captured and eaten as 'Slave flesh' by the northern Maori doing raids. (Well they all ate each other - 80% of Maori pre European were dark skinned easily fattened slaves farmed and eaten by a lighter skinned 'Ariki' thin wiry elite royal caste). So it was with some righteousness as well as British cunning that they armed the southern Maori who then with muskets launched a genocidal war on the north.. That plus measles & flu halved the Maori population and removed most of the elite. The British then liberated the slaves and outlawed cannibalism. The northern Maori fought with the British against the south bad west Maori 'rebels'. The Maori sued for peace and a treaty was signed that removed all sovereignty and made them subjects to the English crown where the English would protect them from each other. Land could only be sold to or via the Crown. Maori could live on their reservations with native custom but none did. The treaty of Waitangi is strikingly clear in that the Maori cede sovereignty completely and become citizens of Great Britain - all 3 clauses lock that in. Nothing in today's 'Maori' culture is authentic. The music - all European (Maoris did not have tonal music, the songs are missionary tunes or introduced - Poi dance is from Islands and Stick dance from old Malaya. The carvings and art - all European - Arabesques that was the fashion at the time. Original Maori had limited dash carving and no painting of objects. No written language - all the syntax & grammar plus vowel inflection is European. No technology - some lagoon canoes and wood or stone Neolithic tools. No food sources - like pigs or crops - they left that all behind, all they had was a weak inbred fox (now extinct), some rats and a weak dismal pacific yam. They ate out all the bird-life including 10 species of Moa and 46 other bird species, didn't know how to farm the sea as were island people and so they turned to societal cannibalism. Today - no full blood or half blood left. No genuine tradition and almost all are offspring of Maori slave females sold to white settlers for muskets or food. -So more fake than the 'Sioux' or 'Cherokee' or 'Crow' who had at least retained some genuineness about who they were and their history. -Everything you 'saw or experienced' is fake. A totally convected disneyfied tokenistic set of inventions fueled by a grievance culture of mixed-race imposters fetishing a false past bad history because it pays benefits. Very one view , LEARN YOUR HISTORY in totality! if land is important it must be well used! IF it is to be "returned" WHO with knowledge to farm / utilise it is the important reality! All this talk of the past is unhelpful as most is very ill-informed! Farmers were not wealthy! Farming needs knowledge not feely touchy beliefs , prices often slump depression conditions cause disasters, What past situations in ALL countries can be viewed today as faultless! check out history Highland clearances, Land settlement in USA . Africa (check out the Zimbabwe disaster) Much of todays situation root in the Maori holocaust of the "musket wars" with the utter decimation of tribal numbers (pretty much HALVED ) and disruption of tribal areas. All old stuff. ! TODAY we must sort an intelligent result. Concentrate on real constructive futures, This very brief summary is not a good discussion only a start .

One eyed journalism. All land in NZ is under perpetual lease . The entire easy coast , from Hicks to Gisbourne, from the ranges to the sea was given to Maori after the 2nd WE. A clause was put on this gift , stating , if a certain percentage of arible land turned back to native bush it would be returned to the government. Maori youth headed for the city and there was no one the work the land . This is still the case , Maori don't want to work, they just want easy money.

Yes that massive parcel of land is owned by my family and extended family to date our family has received 50 grand split between more than 500 families the lease holders and there families have become very wealthy because they illegally used far more land than they were supposed to and then didn't want to pay they had been using it for 60 + years when they got caught and even though the payment would have been a tiny amount to them they refused rand just agreed to stop using it. Still we are unable to use the land ourselves because we would have to buy out the current lease holder at current market rate for the fully developed property valuation, not the 5% of undeveloped land value back in the early to late 90s now that is all the lease holders have had to pay for this whole time. But somehow we are accused of being greedy lazy thieving dole bludgers. I have work full time since I was 14 still finished high school and paid my own way through University I have tried to use our our land but the bank will not approve even a tiny loan to help with buying back the lease even if we have cash deposit. You seem perfectly happy to give the real greedy crook who's made millions probably shouldn't talk out of your ass so much your breath just ganna smell of sh*t.

If you mean hunting , which really means raping land as the Maori back in the 1800s did. 🤑 Or do you mean , clearing native bush so you can farm as the colonials did. What do you do?
