Fleeing a hurricane on a sailboat but we got it all wrong!

We read the forecasts just like everyone else and made the same call that they did. But time will tell if we all got it wrong. We have the sail of a lifetime zigging and zagging between boats all fleeing from Martha’s Vineyard, and drop the hook just inside of the Newport bridge.
Thanks for watching-

Here's what we think we know about her past. Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. See • We Buy a SALVAGE SAILB... for how we came to own her!

I’m a commercial fisherman in Alaska. We fish in all kinds of conditions and carry Bonine. It’s over the counter and works for 24hr (long enough to get your sea legs ) better than Dramamine and non Drowsy. You can try the Relief band as well. But I would carry the Bonine on the boat just to be safe. I also agree that stress can be just as bad as sea state. When I started fishing 20+ years ago I would get sick as we heard out worrying about all I had to do and learn. Thankfully I no longer get sick anymore. I hope this helps. Thanks for sharing your experience.

When I was in the Navy on patrol craft (where sea-sickness is a fact of life), we used to always have a stock of flavoured ice blocks (like popsicles) on hand - really helped. And when you were working to replace the anchor I was thinking why not set them both? Of course you're probably just not set up for 2 anchors, but it's definitely something to think about & prepare for in the future. Double-anchoring can massively improve your holding.

Good tip! Thought about the 2 anchors. However don't risk it by not turning on the engine every boat was gone. As a rubbertramp don't bet on a storms timing. Please I worry for travelers cuz I am one. The sailing uma channel did a hurricane preparedness episode. Very useful. Check it out. Maybe 🤗💚💚💚

didn't read comments so maybe/likely another sailor has advised. That swivel is not rated for lateral loads you will get directly attaching it to the anchor as you did. When the chain is out of line with the anchor you are asking that swivel to act as a beam. Bad. It is built for longitudinal strength. Add a shackle. This is real, not theoretical. Trust me.

You should consider adding a bow shackle between the swivel and the anchor. Swivels aren't designed for the side loads that can be generated when attached directly to the anchor. They need to have freedom of movement from side to side as well as up and down so the pull is always along the axis of the swivel.

Agreed, the swivel is a very weak link, especially connected to the anchor that way. Lose it entirely or use a shackle to allow for side loading.

The shackle between the anchor and swivel is invaluable for storm management, easily turning the anchors as the boat swings, but not tripping the anchor.

for me sea sickness was reduced by being outside with a breeze on my face, and being able to see the water. When inside my body was feeling the rise and fall but the cabin walls were telling my brain nothing was moving. that conflict was making me sick. Once outside watching the water/horizon i felt much better...

I find a lot of people get sea sick from anxiety. With your headsail furler in storms…while it looks like a tight wrap and secure the best thing is to take it down. Get yourself two flapper stoppers for your headsail foil so the foiled doesn’t flap and damage itself. I couldn’t tell you how many disasters I’ve seen from furlers.

On the subject of seasickness: Start sailing on a full stomach. And keep snacks on hand. I like trail mix. I dont have a lot of experience but not eating one day made me feel pretty sick, and a good breakfast and snacks were much better the next. Beyond that, if you start to feel it coming on, stand and hand steer for a while, which helped me out.

The only time I've ever been sea sick, sailing in a gale on a 27' sail boat through LI Sound from Mystic, CT to Barrington, RI (we took a beating), I fixated my thoughts on the super-cute blonde who lived next door to me. That seemed to help.

I agree hand steer definitely helps as you can get a feel for the motion of the boat. Ginger candy, with real ginger, helps. Snacks handy either in the cockpit or below in a known convenient place. There are two bad things about feeling seasick. The first is when you are feeling seasick you feel like you’re going to die. The second is worse as you know you’re not going to die. 😂

Seasickness always feels worse when your blood sugars are low, so eating and drinking is important. Also dry gagging and heaving really hurts your stomach, so it is better to eat and be sick that starve and retch dry. P.S. eat oatmeal/porridge. It tastes much the same going in or out. It also give you a slow release sugar source.

My mother's oatmeal would have been the perfect recipe for the sailing stomach. We had a long school bus ride, seriously long, bad shock absorbers, washboard dirt county section roads; you get the picture, rusty mustard yellow outside, institutional pre-penitentiary green inside. An old, splinter cracked, mirror gave us all a view of our faces hopping amid the windows of passing sagebrush outside superimposed the vista of raw terrain ahead, also bouncing. I learned to pack fried egg with bacon and onion sandwiches to eat at school before classes. BUT never before the ride. Somehow, sitting in the calmer, middle center of the bus wasn't cool back then. So remembering all this is sending me to research the Vagus Nerve reactions, possibly related to the nausea of sea sickness. Marvelous Marginalia. Enjoy.

Good to see your preps for the hurricane! I noticed in this video and in the previous one that your autopilot setting is causing it to very frequently make corrections (highly sensitive). You'll save more of your batteries when setting is to a lower sensitivity. Also, do you have the opportunity to disconnect the wheels from the rudder? The movement of the steering wheels by the autopilot also takes quite some energy you might want to save. Keep up the good work and hope you guys (and the boat & dogs) survive the hurricane!

Yes junk, the anchor swivel. Make your own decisions and don't chase the crowd. It's your decision as capt's to determine your own fate. I have traveled the world and sailed the Caribbean for 5 years. You can now join the small group of folks that know physical fear, it sucks. The more chain the better. I've been caught in 80 miles of wind, having used a 45 CQR (38ft boat) and 125 ft of 3/8th chain. After the first 24 hours, I went down to check on the anchor, I found that the anchor had barely been pulled on. The chain took all the pull the boat could offer and had lifted and dropped back to the bottom, with little pressure on the anchor. Dampen the Anchor using a snubber, Lots of chafing gear. Old Tee shirts are fine for this. I'm sure you learned loads from the experience. Add it to the Evan's book of knowledge. I look forward to every new video.

My multiple pond crossing pharmacist put me on to Stugeron, start 12 hrs before sailing, and Buccastem, tuck one under your top lip as required within recommended 24 hr max dosage. I took a delivery job from Greece to Spain as chief eng. on a converted mine-layer that corkscrewed like a stuck pig and only had a day tank that served for 6 hours, so I had to be in the engine room transferring fuel every 5 hours. It took an hour to do each fuel transfer because the main tanks were badly contaminated so every drop of fuel had to be re-polished during transfers. The smell of diesel turns me over at the best of times so I was dreading the voyage as the end of season weather was atrocious, particularly crossing the Bay of Naples where it’s fairly shallow and a Mistrale really kicked off. 24 hours on the Stugeron/Buccastem combo worked brilliantly. After that I just popped a Buccastem tab behind my top lip at every fuel transfer and had no snags at all. I can’t recommend the treatment highly enough. Funny thing is, I’m fine sailing. 🤷‍♂️ Cheers guys, hope you’re safe and sound now. R. 😎👍

The way it’s been explained to me, seasickness is your brains response to your eyes not seeing what your inner ear ((balance) is sensing. For instance if you’re down below, your eyes don’t see the boat moving relative to the horizon. The interior of the boat looks stationary to your eyes, but your inner ear senses the boat moving. Your brain invokes a poison response assuming you’ve eaten something that’s affecting your balance, which is why you feel sick and vomit and all that pleasant stuff. So there are a couple ways to prevent and fix seasickness. You need to make sure there isn’t a conflict between your eyes and inner ear. Soooo…….look out at the horizon, close your eyes, don’t go down below unless you’re going to sit or lay down and close your eyes. There are medications, but they can make you drowsy, and wristbands that some people swear by, but I have no idea how they work. With time, many people get over seasickness as their brain adjusts, others, not. Best of luck, I really enjoy your channel.

I don’t normally get seasick, but I went out once in rough conditions with my stomach already upset and realized that I was getting really nauseated. I remembered that I had bought a set of SeaBands for passengers to use. I was skeptical about the whole “pressure point” voodoo, but within a few minutes of putting them on, my stomach settled and I felt fine. I doubt it was placebo effect, because I honestly didn’t expect them to work. ;-). I also sent my kids off on a tall ship two years ago. They told me they were having problems with seasickness, so, since I’d planned to meet them at their first point of call to take pictures, I bought them scopolamine patches. They’re over-the-counter in Canada, I think they’re prescription in the USA. The kids said they worked great. Lance S/V Great Escape - Newport 30-Mk lll

I'm enjoying watching your journey from a significant boat overhaul to launch and adventuring! One recommendation regarding your swivel attachment to your new anchor, I'd strongly recommend that you put a few links between the anchor shank and your swivel to that when the wind shifts the swivel is always pulled straight on so it doesn't take an off-angle load.

My number one advice, from sailing and special mission aviation (bumping along in manoeuvring flight in the ground turbulence for hours, head-down) is: Don't ever skip eating. And if you did skip eating, eat while you can keep it down. Bananas are your friends! (But eat them anyway.) And drink water. Empty stomach => queasy. Love the pace, production, narration and content. Learned a lot about boat repairs - keep us learning.

Anchors create hot discussions…. :-) Anyway, your new Sarca Exel is way better than your old Delta, no matter what type of bottom you have. I’ve used both. Others mention your swivel attachment, which I strongly suggest you think about. There are much stronger swivel types than yours, but no matter what type, it absolutely needs to move freely in any direction. Most recommend having some links of chain between the anchor and the swivel. I’d recommend just removing the swivel and putting the chain straight onto the anchor with one good shackle. A swivel is an added point of failure, and its function is an illusion. My experience (substantial) says that a swivel is the solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. A chain with no swivel can handle a LOT of twist without any problem whatsoever. I’ve been at anchor for months straight, in places where the boat rotates many times per day, without any noticeable chain twist. If you really want a swivel, Mantus has a strong one that many like. The one you have now is definitely a no go.

stress will add to seasickness, so will not eating . Best tip is to drive , the driver of a car never gets car sick . It keeps your eyes on the horizon so your eye and inner ear agree and it gives you a feeling of control . That your eye and inner ear disagree is why going below is so bad - don't read or text on your phone .

I'm sure its already been said, but larger anchors don't offer any real additional value to the hold. The anchor really just holds the cable in place, as it is the cable that holds you in place (not the anchor). To that end investing in heavier cable offers much better value for money. Please do remember to check your swinging circles such that you have room to pay out more cable - more cable reduces the risk of dragging.

You learn a lot from an experience like this which equips you better as a skipper. You were forunate this was not a larger storm. The intensity leading into the storm is potent. I've been through two hurricanes in a 30 foot wooden sailboat. One was in the middle of the Gulf and other anchored behind Padre Island. The second, Alan with 200 mph winds for two days. After the storm my spreaders were draped in seaweed to the decks. I had 5 anchors out and they held. My friend was anchored a quarter mile from me in his 65' ketch which he found 6 miles from where he left her when the coast guard demanded taking us off our boats.

Welcome to my home port! I have a private mooring in the kickemuit. You anchored just near us and I was able to see it in the video! Glad you made it through ok.

Anchor swivels should be mounted on a short bit of chain, rather than right on the anchor. Side loading in the event of a wind or tide shift can trivially easily cause the swivel to fail. No joke.

Read once that if you are right handed roll up a ear plug ( noise) and put it in your left ear ( opposite ear if left handed ).Supposed to make ears seem unbalanced to bain so it only then uses vision for balance so look forward to horizon K

We lived aboard for three years and starting every June, a tiny knot would form in my stomach that would gradually grow to grapefruit size by the middle of September dealing with projected storm tracks of hurricanes. Years later, even though we have been off the boat for a decade or two, I still feel the knot by August-September. Whew. And the first time I dropped the bimini like you did, I earned a trip to a local dentist the fix the front tooth that got the corner smacked off. Ah, what memories. We also found it useful to duct-tape around hatches and dorades that we didn't want water driven into by 80 plus knot winds.

Yes I'd be worried if that weather was coming and I was on land but you 2 are on a boat, sideways sailing god bless you both that's amazing what you have done fixing a sailing boat and planning the around the world trip great

might not be sea sickness, maybe stress related due to circumstances. but if it is food is important. have had 5 hurricanes while we own a boat and the stress is incredible. we lucked out on Henri this time. best wishes to all in the path of Henri

Stress always adds to seasickness. Ginger is still one of the best. I like ginger and dark chocolate. I break off most of the choc. It makes it eatable without too much dairy. Dairy can add to the queazy feeling. I think it's an acid thing. Eat it if u can b4 u leave but keep it simple and no acids like juice. Small meals are good. Things like slowly eating fresh bread help to keep tummy acid absorbed. Once you start to feel sick, it will amplify fast. Take a deep breath.. Hold it 5 seconds. Then try and suck in a bit more air. Hold it then "Zen" breath it out. Repeat. This is a great stress relief method and can reset your brain. Stay hydrated, "really stay hydrated" but don't drink a cup of water, unless you are dehydrated. Even keeping your lips moist with small sips has a huge effect on feeling less seasick. Taking a sip, wetting lips, rinsing, and spitting water overboard can help remove the vomit feeling. I stress the word help. I think it's an acid thing. My best advice is to HAND STEER. It's not often the driver of a car gets car sick because they are aware of the motion. It is similar for boating. The thing is, these have worked for me in the past, then on similar and even milder situations, failed. Just prepare and be pro-active. PS.. Pressure wrist bans never worked for me, or anyone else that's been on my boat. But worth a try.

A good thing to try if you feel a bit green is to take the helm, it takes your mind off your problem, don’t go below, if you can buy bottles of ginger ale all ways keep one in the cockpit and preferably let it loose all its fizz. Happy sailing from New Zealand

Great vid today Jade, trust you're experience will help with future events. As most people have already said "worrying" only adds to a problem, any problem. Hope you two are having fun wherever you're at. :-) While you probably did so following up on the references to Sailing UMA and SSL will provide peace of mind for the next big blow to come around.

Dude, that advert! you looked so camp lol. So far as seasickness, being stressed out can really set you off. A good way to calm it down (or stop it) is, get on the helm and look at the horizon. This sends messages to the brain calming your inner ear.

Sea sickness cure. Take the helm and keep your head in the wind. Works like a dream and helps the body to acclimatise. Good luck.

Seasick? Keep plenty of pretzel rods or sticks on board. Just keep nibbling on them. You’ll see. Great vid. Can’t wait to see part 2. Stay safe & enjoy the ride.

We live about an hour north of Narraganset RI and had hardly any wind or rain. Very gusty but nothing like on the coast. I can't imagine it in a boat!

Stugeron for seasickness.... Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, Bahamas....no US... when you get a chance. You could also have set both anchors on the same rode in tandem.

My best tip against sea sickness is eat something a bit salty, and have a full stomach. If the sea bothers you, keep your eyes on the horizon and stand up. If you sit you wil roll and rock with the boat. So far coffee has had no effect for better or worse in my experience.

to avoid seasickness this works for me no spicy food or coffee before leaving and during trip , sip don't gulp liquids , chew gum , SeaBands . Dimenhydrinate works great but your going to be very sleepy .
