I was there, I shed a tear. J Tillman's fills during the ending section (unfortunately not on this video) were incredible. What an incredible band, could have easily came out and played 3 minute indie-folk pieces, but instead we were treated to movements.

My guess would be that he wanted something he felt more intimately connected to, and as he started out as a solo musician he probably wanted to get back that, as that's what he's most comfortable doing. I'm just speculating, though.
