No. Not underrated. Everyone who was playing blues or blues/rock professionally at that time knew who he was and what he could do. (At least according to plenty of sources that said he was well-known in those circles.) And often, he wasn't even the best guitarist in his own band. So, no. Not underrated at all. He was a good guitarist, not one of the greats.

John MacAulay 13 January 2018 Many thanks to Thomas for sharing some of the VERY BEST of Fleetwood Mac. Danny Kirwan's playing is nothing short ofBRILLIANT...an enchanting example of "Less is More," especially on WOMAN OF 1000 YEARS and SANDS OF TIME. He sparkledin much the same way on BARE TREES (ie. SUNNY SIDE OF HEAVEN, DUST and SENTIMENTAL LADY). It's a shame that his WHITE FLAME dimmed in his solo career, but for 4 or 5 years that baby-faced virtuoso made my high school listening veryenjoyable! If the CD format had existed in the early '70s those two LPs would have formed one of the very best discs...EVER!This is not to discount the chemistry of F-MAC during the Post-Peter Green years. The namesake rhythm section, Christine McVie, and Bob Welch, along with Jeremy Spencer (on KILN HOUSE) had much to do with that cohesive blend of melodic bliss. What a wonderful era of music...THAT VINTAGE of the MAC was very underrated in those days. 45+ years later I appreciatethat echo-laden offspring of "ALBATROSS" even more!

Back in the day I didn't follow FM other than what was on the radio. Some folks would say that they preferred Christine McVie. I didn't know what to make of it and didn't research. At that time Stevie Nicks ruled. All these years later, I have explored their catalogue all the way back to Peter Green. And of course this gem of an album with so many beautiful songs. McVie's Show Me a Smile is an enduring classic that I enjoy at least as much or more than any of Nicks' hits.

Thank you so much for posting. This is my favorite FM album. It does give me chills, even now. The lead off song is my favorite on the LP. It takes me back to 1971 every time i hear it. It was a different world , for sure. This album was one of transition, with the addition of Bob Welch, who adds a great element to the band. The first ten albms by FM are their best. I thought that " Mystery to Me " , would give them commercial sucess, and it nearly did. I think it is sad that it wasn't until Buckingham and Nicks arrived that the group headed into superstardom. It always irks me when i encounter someone who is surprised that FM had any albums out before the 1975 album " Fleetwood Mac ". So much great music from the band before Lindsay and Stevie joined up.

The cancellation of the Mystery to Me doomed Fleetwood Mac for a little bit finding success after Bob Weston had an affair with Mick's wife and the manager had that fake Fleetwood Mac tour.

@coogan8825 I think you are distinctly in a small minority thinking that. I really love their early stuff, too, but the brilliance of the Fleetwood Mac and Rumours albums can't be overstated. The songs are just so consistently strong.

Love Danny somehow I got lucky when I was a little kid my first album was Kiln House I picked it out of what was there at a grocery store in AZ and it is still one of my fav albums the other I picked was Tumbleweed Connection just when by album cover energy I wasn't aware of but drew me to pick these two and I got home and was like what the hell is blood on the floor doing here bahaha still wonder about that.both albums started my musical journey but what a pick that was like winning the lottery can you imagine ? I realize now what an amazing rare beautiful talent Danny was I love the way he plays hits those notes you know the ones that bring pleasure I just wish there was more music more video from old super 8s anything just more of Dannys talents.

Ivan Hozjan I would recommend all Danny Kirwan era albums: ‘Then Play On’, ‘Kiln House’, ‘Future Games’ & ‘Bare Trees’. Danny was a friend of mine, we met in the mid ‘90s and hung out for a few years before he moved to Holland. Sadly Danny passed away last year. Danny’s solo albums are also awesome. I did an interview with The Guitar Show last month concerning my friendship with Danny I’ll share below. Danny had left some awesome music for people to enjoy for as long as recorded music is listened to . All the best. THanks for posting! We old heads have this debate about which is their favorite Mac albums...my buddy LOVES this one best, and there are days when I can see that. And, there are days when others see my favorite in a new light, being Bare Trees. But, nobody EVER picks an album from the Buck/nicks era...not that there is any dislike, but the sound is much different. The old Mac bands had the envy of all other artists. The new Mac had the envy of all other financiers :) We're sure grateful for having Christine Perfect in our lives for so many decades, aren't we? Sure gonna miss that woman. Tobias

i have a favorite moment on this album. It occurs on the Future Games track where at the end the power chords come in oh so slowly in the song's "you're not the only one" stage....gently those chops roll in and then rip out my chest cavity....affects me the same way every day.... reminds me of our 100 day acid runs.

Future Games is the fifth studio album by British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac, released on 3 September 1971. It was their first album to feature Christine McVie as a full member. This album was also the first of five albums to feature American guitarist Bob Welch . “He was totally different background - R&B, sort of jazzy. He brought his personality,” Mick Fleetwood said of Welch in a 1995 BBC interview. “He was a member of Fleetwood Mac before we’d even played a note.”

Yes it's my Favorite Mac album, I was in love with Christine for so long.Kirwan was splendid as well as Bob Welch.IMHO when Stevie and Lyndsey came it was never the same? An old friend turned me on to them in the very early 70's and we went to see them at UNC-Chapel Hill along with about 200 others. I stared at Chris all night ,finally caught her eye and mouthed I LOVE YOU and she smiled and I died a wonderful death!!!
